Anna Russell - The (First) Farewell Concert (1984)
To end a long, hilarious career, classical music comedienne Anna Russell revived some of her best and funniest routines and took them on the road. This special PBS production, taped in Baltimore at the beginning of that 1984 tour, is a treasure for music lovers who understand that the thing they love can be charmingly goofy.
The highlight of the disc, and the routine that most fans remember most fondly, is her discussion of the Ring cycle. She tells the convoluted story of Wagner's four-installment epic, with careful attention to its absurdities, and she sings all the roles in a voice ranging shakily but with determination through soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. She does the same in her parody of a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, and the advantage of a video recording becomes obvious when she changes funny hats while singing to show whether she is acting the heroine, villain, or chorus. -

"She then proceeds to bear him 8 daughters." "Well he's a dragon now, don't ask me why." I'm nearly crying.

@Huddiethegreat Well Levine is hard to ever go wrong with. I always find that musicians from the country where it was written gives it an extra kick. There's a truly excellent recording with Sawallisch as the conductor put out in 1998, though the Bohm recording (from 1966?) seems to still reign supreme in many eyes. There's also Solti with a lot of fire and drama (it is the Ring after all), and a Karajan with a fluid beauty at heart.

@Huddiethegreat The ring is so large a work that anyone who is going to put it on is going to do it well so it's hard to get a bad recording. But as it's so large, and Wagner so intricate, it's hard to find two that are similar so you'll never get bored. Each new recording is like a brand new opera (or 4 brand new operas). I'll recommend getting a DVD as well if you're becoming more interested. The music is great, but when you see the staged productions with subtitles it really comes to life

The joke is Brunnhilde's resemblance to Pallas, who sprang in just such a fashion fully accoutred from Jove's head. #TMYK

I have a confession: I missed this concert when she came to Melbourne. I was starting a new job next day and didn't dare stay up late. :-( I do have the CD.

***** If you want the version that was voted the greatest recording of all time (I'm not making this up you know!) invest in the Sir Georg Solti set.

I don't know where she got that "coming out of Wotan's head" bit. Act 3, Scene 1 of Siegfried features Erda talking about giving birth to Brunnhilde.
