Zürich has two modern, automated funiculars and one rack railway. In this video, you will see the two funiculars.

Here in Genoa we have two funiculars similar to these, with a simple track with a central doubling equipped with switches without needles of the type designed by the Swiss engineer Carl Roman Abt. Furthermore, there is a rack railway which, like the funiculars, has a central doubling equipped with needleless switches of the type designed by the Swiss engineer Carl Roman Abt. Due to its gauge and type of operation, this rack railway is often called a "funicular" even in official documents. Does anyone know if there are other rack railways around the world equipped with needleless switches of the Abt type? The vertical horizontal lift of Monte Galletto is also equipped with an Abt type switch

I just rode the third incline railway in Zürich, and it’s a rack railway with an interesting switch. This video is unlisted, but eventually I’ll make a video of this. Zürich inclined railway kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nKeVd9KinpjQf2Q.html

Thanks a lot for the answer. I know this rack railway. It has some very interesting switches (they also placed them in some stations of the rack railway to Mount Rigi, near Lucerne), but they are not of the type designed by the Swiss engineer Carl Roman Abt. See you soon

It looks like they run on flangeless wheels, which allows the weird switch design.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsdkps-m1Z27YIE.html This video explains how funiculars work. At 1:25 in the video, you can see the wheels clearly. One side of the car has a wheel similar to a regular railroad wheel, except that it was flanges on both sides of the wheel, instead of just the inside. On the other side, there is a very odd, large flat wheel with no flanges. This is how it is able to go across the track segments without derailing.

@@trainrover It took me a while to find any video explaining how funiculars work. I'm surprised there are no more! When I first rode one, I thought the train was going to derail! It blew my mind!
