So many memories were made when we sailed on the Holland America ship, Zaandam. Our first voyage of 23 days in 2018 took us from Ft. Lauderdale, through the Panama Canal and up the Pacific coast from Central America to Canada.
Less than a year later in 2019 we once again boarded the Zaandam for a 22-day cruise which began near Santiago, Chile. This trip took us south to Antarctica and then back north again ending in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Built in 2000, the Zaandam is a relatively small cruise ship that carries a slightly more than 1400 passengers. The ship lacks some of the entertainment options of the larger, newer ships but we enjoyed the wrap around promenade deck with teak loungers and low-key atmosphere onboard. The smaller size made it easier to meet fellow passengers and develop friendships over the longer cruises.
Although most of the clips used in this video were filmed on the South American cruise there are some from the previous cruise as well. On both itineraries we were in an Ocean View cabin. Our stateroom in 2018 was in #3339 which had a window that looked out onto the Promenade Deck. Ours was the first sailing after a drydock and the bathroom in our cabin was newly renovated. The old bathtub had been removed and replaced with a large, glassed-in shower.
In 2019, our cabin #1824 was on Deck 1. The stateroom had the older-style bathroom but was larger than the cabin on the Promenade Deck which provided more floorspace and an additional closet. The location at the front of the ship made for a long walk to the Lido buffet, but was handy on port days as the gangplank and tender boarding was right below our room.
