I've used this oil.... it is amazing. I've also used the wood butter on top of the oil. A little does for a long way, and it smells so good.

I refinished an antique walnut dining table with oldies oil. It's been a few months and still looks great. I too am keeping an eye on it for long term. Another video I watched a guy recommended reapplying annually for dining tables. I do love this product.

Great video. Odies is a number one finish for me. I just did a piece of curly walnut and sanded to 2000 grit. Used Odies oil first, waited a couple of days and then used Odies butter. Need to let it cure for several weeks before it reaches maximum protection. I know everyone is looking for an easy finish and Odies is very simple but it you invest more time in the sanding process and do several coats and then recoat again in several months you can have a phenomenal finish.

You didn’t need to use such a piece of the non woven applicator pads. 2x3 inch piece is enough. And store your pad in the jar for future use. And get some Bloxygen for storing the Odie’s oil. It starts the curing process when you open the container for the first time. Keeping the lid on tight and using bloxygen will more or less stop that from continuing.

Amazing! Would love to try this finish and see a side by side of this and the Rubio

Been using this for over two years. Suggest pouring a little on, use a card to spread it around. You lose less soaking into the pad, then I go over everything after I’ve “scraped” it on with the pad and go in small round motions to make sure it’s all worked in, then wait 45 min and buff it in removing excess. It’s treat finish, but don’t seem to be any long term results on KZfaq so I’m still curious about how well it holds up. I’ve only used it on one piece of my own furniture and it’s been 5 months and seems to be ok. But really want a year or two of results. Thanks for your videos. Let us know from time to time how it’s holding up for you!!

First video of yours I’ve come across. Well done 👍. Just finished a coffee table myself and used Rubio for the first time. I guess I’m happy with it except for the “feel” of it since they recommend not sanding to high. So now I’ve been looking into an alternative. Oldies keeps coming up and seems to be a great option. I’ll look for your long term test on your table. For now, thanks for sharing 👍

Thanks for doing the video on Odies Oil as I have noticed several people on IG using it and I knew very little about it. I like the quick application, not having to sand between coats if you apply more than one, but I too have questions about durability. I sure like that sander even though I can't afford one! I am a big believer in the Mirka Abranet discs though, even if the yellow sander I use has a different name on it. LOL

I discovered Odie’s about 2 months ago. It’s my go to. I love the natural look and the ease of use for applying. Their butter and wax is very good too. I’ve been re-waxing older pieces with their wax and I’m loving the results.

Great video man! I’m a big Odie’s Oil fan. If applied correctly, I find it holds up well. I also prefer (and is recommended by Odie’s) to do multiple coats on heavy use pieces. This obviously adds time, but provides a stronger, richer and glossy finish.

IMO, Odie's butter wax is an absolute must when using their oil. The butter wax does just what you said you wanted near the end of the vid where it goes in and starts to cure and seal up the pores for added protection. It also really brings out the color of the wood. I wasn't expecting that but the difference is pretty legit. I've re-finished a few cutting boards (walnut, maple and bamboo) using the oil and then butter. I did 2 coats of oil letting each coat cure (wiping off the excess and letting it sit) for 48 hours and then applied and wiped a coat of the butter and let it sit for about 72 hours before using the boards. All 3 have held up great in the 2 months I've been using them. I think that I'll probably get into the routine of using something like the Outlaw's board butter every now and then for upkeep as it's significantly cheaper than the Odie's butter.

I love Odies Oil finish. Have done several live edge tables. I start with 4 coats of Waterlox Tung oil..800 grit sand between coats then buff on Odies for final finish.

I got a pack of maroon pads for $10 and then I cut out a circle shape that matches the size of my sander. Then I use that to apply odie's oil. I tried the manual approach first and I get much more even finishes with the sander, it takes it to another level. To buff it off I do the same with the cotton towel, I cut a circule out and put it on my sander, works great!

I've heard nothing but good things about this finish and I would really like to try it some day. I wonder if it also works for cleaning and curing steel after the forge...hmmm.

I've found that you can fill in the grain a little more if you wet sand Odies in. Creates a slurry and fills in pretty well.

My charcuterie boards would get dry after a bit, then I tried Odie’s wax over the Odie’s oil…huge difference! I am waiting for some Odie’s butter to arrive, so I can try it too(it appears a bit softer than the Odie’s wax)

I wouldn't beat on it for a couple of weeks. It will look the same, but the curing process makes it much more waterproof if you wait. Sanding to much higher grid give you more gloss. I go up to 1500 on some projects.

Hi Zac. I have a question for you. I'm dealing exactly with what you are talking about. I have already stain some cedar wood with a penetrating stain. Can I now seal the wood with Odies Oil, or a lacquer or something? Could you recommend something? Perhaps something non toxic or low VOC? Grateful

Good vid. Definitely gotta saturate the applicator before you even put the Odie’s on the table. I find, so far, it goes a long way. It is an expensive finish, but it looks better than tung oil (I won’t say who, cuz I still love the company) and spar urethane that I had been using. Buffing is basically the same as what us spoon makers call burnishing wherein a smooth stone, piece of wood, or antler is rubbed across the wood. Only do this after finish has been applied, just like in buffing, because you are compressing they wood fibers and the wood becomes impenetrable. No matter the finish (well, oil finishes that harden in the wood anyway) it does lend the wood a lot more life, giving it a nice sheen (when burnishing by hand. Power buffing I’m guessing gives the wood more of a glossy look). Yeah, Odies is a pretty penny, but I bet you can demand a higher price for having used it. And all natural, no fumes, food safe. Any thoughts on buffing with a rotary tool? P

i love my deros sander also and Odlies oil and Monocoat 2c oil . i would of popped the grain by water spray and sanded again then apply Odlies and used a scotch pad on deros to buff it in after spreading on and waiting 10mins to buff

Maybe if you buffed on the Odies Wax, you will get the gloss you were wanting. The table looks amazing either way.

This video was 2 years ago. You said you were going to monitor Odie’s long term protection and looks. I’ve heard 2-3 months after applied it doesn’t look well. What did your monitoring show?

I watched a video from the Odie's creator and he said to wet the pad with the oil before you start. So, as you say when the pad becomes wet, the oil seems to go farther (further?) :-)

This is perfect timing. I‘ve been looking into diff finishes. I’m super lazy and don’t want to sand in between coats lol. I like oil finishes for this. I’m looking forward to part 2 of this. Because that price point is not fun 😅. But if it lasts, I’m down. I recently bought Walrus Oil’s furniture finish to test that out. I’ll let you know my thoughts on that and we can compare.

Using a larger buffing pad is okay, it just needs to be centered so the weight is evenly distributed.

6:15 “Each jar of this stuff is like 50 bucks” Pah! You had it easy mate. One year on, and over in UK…we are looking at 112 USD….Yes, a hundred and twelve bucks for that jar. Though not as LUDICROUSLY expensive as that Rubio mono-coat stuff which retails on Amazon in UK at….wait for it…sit down first….700 bucks Yes! SEVEN HUNDRED USD😳 for about two pints. You could almost as cheaply finish your wood with AAA+ Beluga Caviar…….

If you plane with a Japanese block plane the wood will feel glass silky and the odies will go much much further due the microscopic texture of the wood that a blade rather than a sanding pad does to wood.

You should really watch the apllication video made by the creator of Odie's Oil. He explains the process in depth and covers some things that you missed, like using a cotton towel to remove the oil prior to using a buffing pad. If your table still felt wet after buffing you didn't get all the oil off, which is required to get the best results. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8ioeaar1rXYl2Q.html

Being a moderately new Odie's Oil user, I will say that people's main complaint about the product goes hand-in-hand with your main complaint. You mentioned having to use more product than you thought you would, which sucks given the price point of a single jar, and the company does advertise that one coat is enough to get the job done. This is not the case. For the best results, I've begin using two coats of Odie's Oil, and I apply the second coat after around 36-48 hours (the second coat takes far less product), and then applying a third, and final coat of their Wood Butter, then allowing it all to cure for a minimum of 14 days (I haven't polished anything yet, though, because I tend to over sand the heck out of things and get a pretty darn pleasant sheen just from buffing). If I'm making end grain cutting boards, I actually just do an overnight soak in mineral oil, let it cure until it stops weeping (about 2 days, depending on the wood I use and how much sanding I've done), then I use a single coat of their Wood Butter. I'll be honest, it's worth investing in the Wood Butter (can even be used as a stand-alone finish for pieces that won't much moisture (boxes, etc), and it darkens the wood less than the oil). Not trying to bogart you're very informative video! All I can say is that when I use two coats of oil and one coat of Wood Butter, and let it fully cure? My pieces are almost mirror shiny, they are completely waterproof, and near on indescribable. I actually just recently made a baseball bat out of Padauk and finished it in Odie's Oil and you could hit a home run in Atlantis. Great video!

If you watch the Odie videos they use a small applicator. You may have used more than you need. Emphasis is on rubbing the oil into the wood

Suppose to remove all the oil with terry cloth before buffing, otherwise you end up smearing the oil around with buffer and not removing all the oil.

Nothing like a 700$ sander…

Any oil finish will not stand up to moisture or pooled water as you would find from a cold glass of water or beer. I’m sick and tired of people espousing their lack of knowledge as gospel when French polishers and cabinetmakers with years of experience making a living know it’s rubbish. Sure use an oil finish and see how long it lasts. It’s very easy to apply and that’s where it ends for table tops which need to be properly sealed. If you don’t seal the wood it can absorb or shed moisture causing it to crack and warp. If you want stability the wood has to be sealed on every surface. If you want a hard wearing surface then use a polyurethane or lacquer. It’s that simple. There is a reason why French polishing and furniture polishing are seperate trades. It’s because it requires lots of expertise and knowledge. Don’t get sucked in with oils. They look great for a few days then watch them deteriorate. Do it properly the first time otherwise you’ll be doing it again I guarantee.

I just watched the Odie"s site for application and "How to." Your application and Buffing process is not what they recommend. They applied initially in the direction of the grain then in circles Your initial circular motion is using too much oil. Hand buff first then electric buff after you are certain the surface is dry. Once buffed dry with cotton, you can go to electric buff. If you buff too soon with electric you are defeating the process. See the actual Odie's site for application how to.
