Awesome debate!! The passion and different perspectives made for a great listen. I think "unhinged" is the perfect way to describe Spalletti right now. He's all over the place; bizarre, vacuous and contradictory statements, terrible touchline body language; disjointed tactically, lineups, squad selection etc, and this is clearly transmitting itself to his players. They look confused, anxious and are over-thinking.... barring a few, mere shadows of what we're seeing at their clubs. It was Calafiori and Zaccagni's heart and quality which secured the draw, not a tactical masterstroke from the coach.

Na come on man, we rightfully got 8 minutes. Between the PK, VAR check, incessant time wasting by Croatia, etc. Even Ian Darke and Landon Donovan called it out- the BS by the Croatia players. They said all this time would be added back and referenced why so much time kept being added in the World Cup. I think it’s right that they did that. You can’t get 4-5 mins of added time when Croatia spent 10 minutes wasting time. That plus time wasted during added time. I say 8 minutes was fully warranted. Edit: that said, it should’ve never come down to that. I understand Nyma though, it has been too inconsistent.

Totally agree about moving Darmian to LWB. Insane. He should have started either Cambiaso or Bellanova at the RWB position and taken advantage of all the open space they had in the first half.

When you have the best goalkeeper like Donnaruma who stops just about everything you throw at him you will always be in the game against ANYONE. I don't see Switzerland as well as they've played so far, any more of a threat , if even as much , as Spain. Therefore i'm optimistic against them and even vs possibly England next who have NO IDEA how to attack. And who better than our portierone to have if the game had to be decided on PKs. In addition Italy are on the "easier" side of the bracket and will avoid either Spain , France or Portugal until the final. Everything may be coming up roses for the Azzurri once again great podcast guys

Re the Italy v Switzerland preview discussion and the mention of "has Okafor even played for Switzerland?" No their coach flagged before the tournament that he was not happy with his level of playing time for Milan (and perhaps fitness) and made it sound like he is not impressing him in training. He was critical of if Milan was the right choice of club for him as Leao is limiting his opportunities to play on the left wing.

A brilliant debate, hope you didn’t throttle each other afterwards. Really enjoy your perspectives.. I know Italy look a bit rough but they’re through. They’re likely to play England in the QF if they get past Switzerland. (England also seem to be muddling through with less than spectacular performances.) I agree with the working towards 2026. I would love Italy to bounce back in the next World Cup with a revenge final v Brazil. What are the chances? Best Wishes

Imo the main issue is that Spalletti is playing the wrong fullbacks/wing backs. DiLo is just not good. Idk what happened after the scudetto but he should not even be on the team. And DiMarco is great for Inter's 3-5-2 but that's not what Spalletti plays, and it's just not working out. I think this is why we can't build our the back, and our forwards aren't getting service.

The issue is that Di Lorenzo isnt a wingback, he's a fullback. Bellanova is a wingback. Cambiaso too. Dimarco is just not fit right now. He's just not there mentally either. As we saw in opening game against Albania despite the good reaction.

@@ItaFootPod I'm just praying he plays Bellanova instead of DiLo. DiLo at best right now is a non-factor, but he's more likely to be a problem. And Italy need more speed on the field anyway. If we can figure out how to build out of the back we can be a much better team than we've been seeing, and imo we should be able to do it.

Attacking problem -- NO INDIVIDUALITY-- wingers literally 1v1 with goalie - and actually stops and waits for striker to get in box - DRIBBLE TO NET AND SHOOT !!!! Waiting for Set Pieces is killing them !!! Teams know the system- ITALY WINGERS TAKE THE SPACE AND CREATE A PROBLEM !!!!!

I agree with Nima for the most part. I don’t think Italy went for a draw in the Croatia game. They played horribly. Spalletti contradicts himself. He said he’s going in to win so how then are they playing for a draw? They just played horribly. The problem with Italy is not so much players but the Head Coach’s lack of his players capabilities and their ineffective use. Conte would have done wonders with this team, I can promise you this.

Zaccagni, Scamacca, Chiesa Pellegrini, Jorginho, Barella Darmian, Bastoni, Mancini, Bellanova Is what I'm hoping for against Switzerland. I think 4-3-3 can work with the right players.

i think Italy was pretty good in 1st half, created some chances from Bastoni, Retegui, and Pellegrini. If Bastoni scores its completely different game. Now Croatia has to score 2 goals and italy may have a rout. i also agree that Pellegrini substitution was a mistake.i'm afraid Spalletti could ruin them. Spalletti had a mostly undistinguised career until he finally wins league at 65 years of age and i don't think is an international level coach. some in italy think he's been no better than Jesse Ventura

"You have PTSD from Allegri football." - What a golden line! I think I do too Nima haha. Look boys, Spaletti got it wrong tactically against Spain, should've been a 3-5-2. Yes, we might've been second best, but don't think Spain would've looked as superior. With Croatia, 3-5-2 could've worked, but only 1 wingback in the squad can deliver an attacking threat and that's Bellanova. Udogie and Spinazzola are massive loses for attack. Plus, Ruggeri should've been chosen over Cambiaso (due to Allegri football). There's so much depth missing from this squad. Verratti would have 30 mins a game in him, Tonali is banned. Zaniolo injured. Gnonto not picked still picks my brain. Plus, I don't think we have identity in either formation atm, whether it's 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 with the lack of depth. But we have reacted after conceding goals in a 4-3-3. In the wider picture, Spaletti hasn't shown he is the man for the job. Playing Darmian for 20 mins LWB 1-0 down against Croatia was ludicrous, Frattesi for Pellegrini, not playing Bellanova. I don't understand. Honestly, the Swiss are gonna be gunning for a quarter final place.

If they start the same lineup as they ended off they'll be in a good attacking shape. Im personally not seeing all this hype about Frattesi, i dont see him doing anything meaningful. Keep those same guys in, and maybe add DiMarco. He's a bit of a loose cannon without the ball, but he can cross it in and Scamacca and Retegui are big boys who can get in the air and volly as well.

England won the group, barely conceded a chance despite their defense being their biggest weakness going into tournament, only goal conceded was a 30 yard screamer, the attack improves the more games played as opposition will get more and more tired and so more inclined to make mistakes + games will be more open.

i love pellegrini (i am a pellegrini in fact) and yet i can freely admit he was terrible - that’s why he was pulled. 3-5-2 only produced errors (which is not a systematic, agreed) and boring, static football. 1st half was the best italy huh? and, i’m with spalletti - that was accusatory, leading and incriminating line of questioning. rightfully livid

Watching since 1966 this is by far the worst Italian team as far as quality especially in attack. We have no one to put ball in back of net. When our most fearful player is Bastoni we are incredibly limited offensively. Spalletti we can criticize but we lack quality talent simply is not there actually surprised we went through. Albania first game respected us too much and didn’t press us and yet we were almost tied at end. Spain is simply another level and Croatia is a shell of themselves yet 38 yr old Modric was quick enough to get to a rebound before our defense reacted. We do have a favorable draw and we have dare I say the best goalkeeper in the tournament so we have a 50/50 vs the Swiss after that one never knows, but on a whole let’s be honest this is a very modest team except for Gigi Bastoni Barella and possibly Califiori with no one who scares you in final third if only Chiesa could recapture his Euro 21 form. Thanks so much for a great listen I’m Italian born left my native country at the age of 10 and first ever game watched was 66 final with my late grandpa.

He should make crosses and depend on Scamacca. 3-4-3 with Cambisso and Bellanova for crosses. Or 4-3-3 with Cambiaso and not the fat Dimarco who is in already in vacation, with Chiesa, Scamacca and Zacanie AND play with Bellanova on right when the other team leading and play more crosses

The sea of mediocrity of this Italian team is painful, thankfully upcoming generation seems to be good. Mancini with all his flaws deserve a statue for winning the Euros with Berardi, Immobile and Insigne upfront. Well, Chiesa at his best was there also
