Rot gut whiskey’s gonna ease my mind
Beach town rests on the “drying” line
Do I remind you of your daddy in his 88 Ford?
Labrador hanging out the passenger door
The sand from your hair is blowing in my eyes
Blame it on the beach grown men don’t cry
Do you remember that beatdown basement couch
I’d sing you my love songs and you’d tell me about
How your momma ran off and pawned her ring
I remember, I remember everything
A cold shoulder a closing time
you were begging me to stay till the sun rose
Strange words come on out of a grown man’s mouth when his minds broke
Pictures and passing time you only smile like that when you’re drinking
I wish I didn’t but I do, remember every moment on the nights with you
You’re drinking everything to ease your mind
When in the hell are you gonna ease mine
You’re like concrete feet in the summer heat
It burns like hell when two souls meet
And you’ll never be the man you always swore
But I’ll remember your singing in that ’88 Ford
A cold shoulder a closing time
you were begging me to stay till the sun rose
Strange words come on out of a grown man’s mouth when his minds broke
Pictures and passing time you only smile like that when you’re drinking
I wish I didn’t but I do, remember every moment on the nights with you
Rot gut whiskey gonna ease my mind
Beach town rests on the “drying” line
Do I remind you of your daddy in my’88 Ford
Labrador hanging out the passenger door

As I battle with alcoholism, depression and PTSD while I await help from the VA this song hurts but helps. It’s just different when it says “ you’re drinking everything to ease your mind, but when the hell are you gonna ease mine” it reminds me that I have a gorgeous, loving and caring wife that helps me fight through my battles. I have a different appreciation for this song.

Ain't much to remember cos he was usually busy drinking but one day my dad took me and my brother out for the day, an unheard of gesture. He didn't say much, but we sat down at a park bench and he took an apple out and split it with his pocket knife and gave us each a half. As stupid as it sounds that is a memory I'll always cherish. I stopped drinking 18 days ago so I can offer my daughter more memories than a split apple

I'm just a 56 year old survivor of myself, and all that that entails. Very few things can strike a true chord in me , Zach Bryan does, and never fails. His music burrowed deep in my heart, time is more tolerable, restlessness settles and I feel like I might like to sing again. Thank you for sharing yourself with big bad world. God bless you and yours.

I’ve never heard that phrase before - being a survivor of yourself. That’s what I am. Wasted a lot of my life, most of my potential, and have hurt all the people I love the most. I never meant to, not once - I’ve never been intentionally unkind to a single soul in my life. But being a nice person doesn’t protect the people you love from things you think are ok when you’re in pain. I’ve been in pain most of my life. That doesn’t give me an excuse to cause other people pain even if I don’t mean to - especially the people I love. It took me 38 years to realize all that. I’m almost 43 and I’ve been spending these past years trying to be a different man - and it’s something I have to do EVERY DAY! It’s not a one and done deal. I appreciate your phrase because it helps with this - every day I try to kill my better self. I have to survive myself every day until I die.

Aaron Watson seems great. I haven’t listened much to music for a few years but it does seem a lot of country seems more pop. I remember Taylor swift started out as country in a video about summer or letters in a truck bed. she switched completely.

But I finally can feel the emotions that I suppressed for many years only drinking to be OK with feeling them.
