TEDx Talks

10 жыл бұрын

Zach is a filmmaker, born and raised in Portland. He started his film journey at age seven when his parents gave him a camera at a wedding. After being rejected from film school, he started the KZfaq channel "FinalCutKing," where he posted video editing tutorials. Zach has garnered more than 400,000 subscribers to his channel. In September 2013, he launched a Vine account based around his "magic" editing and has grown an audience of nearly 1 million fans.
Event Recap - April 12, 2014 at the Keller Auditorium with 2900+ in attendance marked the 4th installment for TEDxPortland. Committed to ideas worth spreading in the Rose City and beyond, 55+ volunteers, worked year round to organize this one-day event featuring 14 speakers and 4 performances. This year's theme was PERFECT.
With special thanks to the UNIVERSITY OF OREGON for presenting partnership, a world class stage design provided by HENRY V, an incredible legacy bound book provided by PREMIER PRESS and to the creative digital craft provided by INSTRUMENT. All of our "Perfect Partners" can be found here:www.tedxportland.com/?partners
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Now I'm flying corporate jets for a fortune 500 company, and have the time to go back to video, my first love. Follow your passion. Great job, Zach! You solved the equation early!

Wow. This blew my mind. First I thought that the internet is completely ruining our life, but after this i have a different look at it, what the internet can do. Im a hobbywriter for myself and now that I think about, it's scary. People can read what im writing everywhere. And that Im chatting with people from Indonasia, Japan, ... its amazing! This really makes you think. Thanks Zach for being such a cool guy and thank you for giving me inspiration. ( And sry for all the mistakes in my comment, Im just a 13 years old student from Germany ^-^)

I love how he ended the video, emphasizes that the tools are simply tools. I want to be journalist and nowadays anyone can be one because it's so easy to obtain information but if you can't cultivate it and put it out in the world with a story it becomes meaningless. It IS all about your ideas.

This is why creative content on the internet is so important. Often times content creators are criticized for using the internet as a "get rich quick" kind of thing, but really it is a way to connect creators to an audience that wants to watch/hear/read etc. the content you produce. If you have an idea, you get to skip the working your way up to something you actually want to do, and do it. The illusion of ease in terms of creating successful content is a myth, but it allows your ideas to get out to people who appreciate them.

Surprised I didn't see this sooner (like 8 years ago). The interesting thing is he didn't talk about story telling at all (despite the title) BUT he demonstrated it perfectly!

Yeah but everyone can create, so tons of people do so. That means that out of all those people, only a few will actually be successful. The others will stay unnoticed, make no money, feel useless and give up. That's just reality.

Don't get caught up in the concept that tools and technology can do anything. It is the mind alone that is the key. I am a retired Broadcast Engineer. I have worked with the best crews, million dollar equipment, studio quality cameras and editors. These mean nothing. It is an idea that means everything. Kip Cole and I wanted to try 3 new cameras one weekend and went and shot a play, just to play with the cameras and editor. He morphed that into "12 Days In Dayton, The Scopes Trial" and won an Emmy with it! I made a bet with Sergio Pleckas, our best editor, once. I shot a "How to" video with a $5 used VHS camera did only linear cut editing with that camera itself and another VHS machine. The video and audio quality was beyond awful, yet it is still selling, and I have sold it in 119 countries! I have seen some real garbage come from a whole gaggle of studio cameras, Mackie sound boards, and Grass Valley switchers. One good idea is worth all the technology combined!

HM Dickson Let me drive the above home. Ever see a spaghetti western? I bet you never noticed they were shot with only one camera! Talk about your shoe string budgets! The genius of the videographer, director, and editor cannot be measured. They must have been joined at the hip! This was done in the days of 16mm and a razor blade! They made millions and they are still being watched!!!!!

If I may add something: I believe that it's not just the idea that drives the quality of your work, it's the conditioning of your subconscious mind that drives it. Many people have so many wonderful ideas, but they rarely materialize into reality. They might say that they don't have the time, the funds, or the resources, but ultimately it's the stories they've either told or have been told that keep them stuck. I'm guilty of saying some of that stuff myself, but I've learned not too long ago that those handicaps are not only psychological but also reversible. The greatest asset that a creative can have is a reclaimed subconscious, one that is strengthened by a vibrant new story that plays to their drives in the purest way. Physical tools can only do so much, it's your ideas and, more importantly, your subconscious confidence in them, that propels them into the mainstream.
