It might be possible in the future with AI-tech but it would be really difficult for a camera/program to learn what is drowning. Also, you miss one of the most important roles of a lifeguard, which is to stop problems before they happen. An experience lifeguard would notice for example an in experienced swimmer too far out or a group of drunk teenagers taking unecessary risk and can act before it becomes a problem. Another problem would be that even if you can cover a wider area with surveillance, you'd spread out the actual lifeguards making the response time shorter. Lastly, there is the question of accountability. If a camera doesn't notice someone go under water, whose fault is it?

@@Swansniff2 I know your arguments seem reasonable, but it really isn't insanely complex to recognise drowning, especially if you already have a labelled pool of data where people drown. It can then be used to augment - not replace - the workflow of a lifeguard. The lifeguard is still responsible, the camera just acts as an additional tool to support their work.

@@eddy-currents it is actually insanely complex to recognize drowning. It looks different for everybody and that is why you often have difficulty spotting those drowning at a beach. Some may go down straight down into the water, others may not have air to yell, others may not have energy to splash and alert the AI and others might look like they are just swimming. If anyone could spot drowning then there wouldn’t be a training section for life guards focused on it. Good idea but your argument is a bit flawed.
