I got to spend the day with Zack Arias when he held his OneLight workshop at my studio/apartment. What an amazing teacher, photographer and person. This guy is all about teaching, doing better and passing on the knowledge.
After a long 17 hour day I asked Zack if he would be able to do a 5 min portrait of me to post on the site for all of you guys to see. We started shooting right around 2 AM and Zack was able to hammer out some AMAZING portraits.
I think you will be able to pick up some lighting nuggets from Zack during this video. You will see him go from one or two speedlights to using three.
Zack is a master with speedlights, it was truly an honor to get to pose for a portrait with him.

Mr Polin please accept my sincere apologizes . I have just returned home from working abroad to find that not only yourself but Mr Dom Bower have been receiving stupid comments sent by my arsehole of a brother who has been house sitting for me ( the last time !! ) I am always on KZfaq checking out videos to help my photography studies and found 6 shitty comments on my message page ! There is more I am sure but until they reply who knows ... Once again I am so sorry ,your videos have taught me so much and I am very grateful . I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas Best regards Neil ( the real one ! )

Hey Jared, I've been greatly enjoying these 5 minute portrait photo videos, they're some of the more informative videos you've put up. I'm glad they don't run just 5 minutes because at the end I'm always curious for more. I recently got some flash gear and was able to employee some of the things Zach did in this video. The photos I was able to take turned out great and I attribute it to what I learned from watching what sort of things Zach was doing to get his pictures. Thanks to both of you!

@UmbraOnyx The easiest way to do it is using a two light set up (or three if you want a back light). The trick is to have them almost entirely off to each side so you have no light on the background and have the subject away from the wall. Then make sure the lights are very bright and bring down the exposure on your camera so the BG blacks out and the subject is lit still. I did this for a video project recently and it will work with continuous lights.

I love how he takes advantage of Jared's beard. In one of Zack's videos he talks about posing models so that they don't have huge shadows under the chin, but with the beard you can get a more interesting light and the chin isn't so noticeable. So brilliant.

hi! do a little reading on inverse square law. you'll get the concept, nothing to complex.
@cyoncastrol
@cyoncastrol 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Majj, I can deeply understand how the Inverse Square Law works mentioned by our friend here zeebazu, however, it's rather hard to explain for me. For the sake of simplifying the concept, you must understand that light travels distances just like sound waves, of course, waves are like a cone, smaller on one end and bigger on the other end, for light, when your source shoots light(flashes, lamps, even the sun), it begins with the smaller size of the wave and it goes dimmer and dimmer up to the other side, meaning that, by the end of the wave your light will be less powerful but brighter at the beginning. What Zack did with that portrait is that, as you can see he positioned the speed light as close as Jared as possible, in order for the start and smaller part of the wave(which is also the brightest part) hits directly to Jared, making the last part of the light wave a lot dimmer and less bright, if you combine that with a fast enough shutter speed, the sensor won't catch that light on the background, making it black! I hope this helps!
@the80386
@the80386 9 жыл бұрын
Majj Majj HSS won't be necessary in doors (in lighting condition like this video). If you run in iso 100 and get your subject as far away from the wall as possible but put the flash as close to them as possible without getting in the frame, it should turn the background black even in shutter speeds lower than 250th unless your lens is super wide open.

Majj Majj grab your little cousins and get them to hold the flashes for a session in exchange of candies or something. that's what i did back when I didn't have any stands and just one ancient vivitar manual
@what9229
@what9229 9 жыл бұрын
You firstly need to kill the ambient light in the room with a small aperture such as f16 or more maybe less. You also need a fast shutter speed. Your speedlight need to be on a high power and pointed away from your background.

These shots are still epic, eleven years later. I seem to be a little late to the party, but here's a (probably dumb) question... In the last set with the black background, is there a way to still light the subject with a soft light while still creating the black background?
