There was ONE injustice comic where Batman did kill, but he immediately turned himself in for the crime hereafter. That proves to me that people can write a story of Batman doing something out of his character without flat out destroying it.

I’m kind of on this whole situation. On one hand, I completely agree that Batman shouldn’t be a murderer. He supposed to stand for something better than lethal violence. Bruce has seen repeatably the horrors of death and wouldn’t inflict that on anyone else. What are you agree with his method or not? It’s very respectable and shows that no matter how violent he may appear he has a good heart. On the other hand, though, I can understand the appeal of wanting to push your character into uncomfortable places. We all know that the main Batman will never kill. So I can see why people would like to question “well what if he did?” What happens to a hero when they cross the line? Are they too far gone and they’re now better than the villains, or can he come back to the light? in a better story, I think this would be a really interesting direction to take Batman, even if I personally would not have him kill someone. I think the best story to tackle this concept is Arkham City. The game has a big theme of “should you let terrible people die even if it’s for an unjust reason?” Not only is Batman’s moral code several times by enemies and allies alike throughout the game, but even by the end, Batman questions if he should just let the joker die, but ultimately stands by his convictions. It handles the same in a more respectful manner to the character established in my opinion.

Where he's get put ina situation that literally tests everything he stands for and believes in. He found a way to get out of it without killing either Jason or Joker. Batman Under The Red Hood is *THE* best Batman movie and I will die on that friggin hill. Solid animation, fantastic pacing, great action, and hell you don't even need to be a Batman fan to enjoy it! The movie does a amazing job of introducing the concept of multiple robins and whatever. God I could gush about that movie for hours.

1:05, Weirdly enough, most live action Batman iterations are put in positions where they directly or indirectly kill someone (Keaton’s killing his Joker and some goons, Kilmer’s tricking his Harvey with those coins to fall to his death, Bale’s abandoning Ra’s Al Ghul, tackling his Harvey of a platform to protect Gordon’s family, and crashing Talia Al Ghul’s truck, and finally Afleck’s openly slaughtering goons with cannons, explosives and even a crate thrown with his grapnel). The issue is, if we’re talking about putting Batman in positions where he has no choice but to directly or indirectly kill someone, the best live action Batman to do that while still keeping his “no killing” rule relevant is Bale’s, as a major aspect of that iteration is his refusal to become an “executioner”, to not kill people who were defenseless (like he was as a child) or otherwise not a threat to him or anyone else due to his abilities being so advanced compared to most people he encounters. He let Ra’s die because he had no other way to stop him or the League Of Shadows, a literal army of ninjas all sharing his combat and espionage training, an organization that contributed to Gotham’s poverty and indirectly killed his parents. Harvey shooting him limited his ability to protect Gordon’s family from him and all he could do was just tackling Harvey away from them. And Talia was armed with an active nuke counting down to destroy the city, meaning Batman had to get to it as fast as possible, even if it meant potentially endangering Talia in the process. Otherwise, in most other circumstances, his capabilities and equipment allowed him to subdue most of his enemies without killing them, including Joker, who once incarcerated, realistically had no means of escape or getting any kind of leniency from the courts, not with all he’s done. This adaptation of the “no killing” rule is less rigid than in the comics, but it makes sense considering this version of Batman’s world is meant to be closer to a normal world than most adaptations, having Batman specifically being against executing or assassinating people (again, killing people who are defenseless) but willing to kill to defend others in desperate circumstances where he can’t control every aspect of a situation works for that version of the character and the world and story he inhabits. Affleck’s Batman does the exact opposite, openly attacking most of his opponents with lethal force, even in situations where doing so actively goes against his goals, such as the Batmobile chase where he first planted a tracker on the vehicle’s he’d be following to the Kryptonite storage, then needlessly and completely unprovoked, he follows this up by nearly flattening the whole convoy with his Batmobile before they even reach their destination and reveal the location to him. It’s there just to have a bombastic action sequence with the Batmobile and has no functional purpose to the plot (such as having Batman overhear something about one of the goons that sends him into a frenzy that briefly sabotages his own mission, showing Batman becoming murderous has made him undisciplined and ineffective). Afleck’s Batman being this willing to kill, directly or indirectly, (even more so than Keaton’s, the other most lethal Batman) also creates another problem, as it opens the question of why any supercriminals are still alive in Gotham, what would stop Batman from executing and assassinating them (especially Joker and Harley after their killing of Robin supposedly was the catalyst that made him lethal to begin with). The only real logical answer is Batman is only willing to kill when in a fight, but this still doesn’t explain the amount of supercriminals that have survived where several goons have perished. At least Keaton’s was consistent enough to actually kill off some of his villains along with some of the goons that were in his way. Either way, it’s a mess.

To be fair he said he wanted to put these heroes in these types of situations but his approach was not executed very well. For example in the docks scene before the Batmobile chase scene Batman shoots a tracker onto the truck carrying the Kryptonite and instead of secretly following the truck he goes on a gun toting car chase and might’ve potentially lost the track when he ripped off half the truck, in Justice League Wonder Woman blew up one guy when in the same scene we saw disarm and incapacitated and even kill some of the gunman in that scene when she could’ve easily disarm the gunman, in BVS again in the Africa scene Superman flew at the terrorist holding Lois Lane hostage with great force and speed when he could’ve easily disarm him and we see Superman be fast like slow motion fast like The Flash in Justice League. My problem with Snyder is that he puts these heroes in easily avoidable situations that can easily be solved without using great amount of lethal force. Wonder Woman did not need to blow someone up and cause greater property damage and potentially put more people in danger, Batman did not need to chase the goons with the Batmobile, Superman could easily save Lois without killing a human being in the process.

Great video Demi I stand by all the points that you made. Batman is one of the motivational characters ever he sticks to his own morals and gets his talents through hard work and dedication. The Arkham games explore that morality well and so does Under the Red Hood. So to have him destroy that one rule doesnt make him Batman it makes The Red Hood or Grim Knight. You praise Batman as he is depicted in a book and would rather dismiss the idea entirely of him losing his way which would go against your idealized version of Batman. Affleck's Batman isn't a murderer, everything he does in the film is retaliation. He kills, or commits manslaughter (Like Bale's Bats) but not murder. Personally I think Snyder's Batman was cold af. These characters are fundamentally designed to have different adaptations, if people can't handle Batman killing in one movie then they are soft. I think people misunderstood the whole character arc, by the BvS he spared Lex after superman's sacrifice, this universe was supposed to show the heroes going through hardship so they could get enough development to become the traditional version. To be honest zack is always delusional, he never really understood the character batman is a mortal man but sadly he only looked at moments of comics and wiki pages to get his character.

The contrast of Batman is part of what makes him so great. Having that darkness in him and refusing to kill is a beautiful combination. Superman or the Flash deciding not to kill isn't interesting. There's nothing in them but good (except Injustice) and you expect that behavior. Batman being dedicated to not killing is interesting because it creates an eternal conflict alongside whatever the story of that movie, game, comic, etc is. I respect the desire of a writer or director to explore the unexplored. But this isn't some interesting dynamic that would add something. It does the opposite and removes the complexity from Batman. In the best Batman iterations, there's a near looming threat: what does Batman become if he begins to kill? In a universe where he just kills on the normal, this stops existing. There's no counter balance to Batman. He has no moral conflict and no weakness to prey on. DC needs to be exploring the complexity of their heroes. Not removing them because their director describes himself as a contrarian.

How does the act of not killing make a hero irrelevant? Snyder sounds like the type of children Superman was worried about. I forgot which movie Superman said it in, but he commented on how he doesn’t want children to grow up thinking that killing bad guys is cool. But even when ignoring the morality of it all, Batman killing opens a flaw in the writing as you have to justify him consistently failing to kill every villain he captures… especially the Joker who in the Snyderverse KILLED Robin.
