The story here is essentially a near-death experience. At the end, Earl banishes the afterlife figures and returns to the world of the living. Boy Bands is great. You'll love it.

This was one of the last ones that Earl appeared in, and it was after a health scare. The other four characters are representing Lords of the underworld. Geoff is on one side and is Baron. In the voodoo faith, he is called upon for healing and resurrection. He is often at the crossroads between the living and the dead. The other three are greedily awaiting Earl to pass away so that they can whisk him off to their various underworlds. So I see it as a battle for his soul between undecided Geoff on one side and the other three. And that plays out with the way the stage is set. Eli comes over and gets in Geoff’s face for a minute who just sends him back to the other side. And then Earl recovers, vanquishes the spirits (Geoff last). If you rewatch that with this in mind the story is so much more meaningful. Another viewer pointed out that Baron requires payments for his services. In addition to being able to heal someone, he is also the one that decides whether or not someone dies. In the very beginning Nick, Earl’s real life husband, places a gold medallion around his neck. At the end when Earl recovers, the medallion is gone as payment to the Baron for allowing him to live.

If you would like a goofy one that they did earlier on, I could highly recommend "Road Trip" It is one that they did when touring with the show The Sing Off. I love how they use music to explain what would happen on a road trip with them. Sooo funny.

They were there to take him across to the underworld. The heart weighed against the feather (his was lighter than the feather which meant his soul was pure and he'd go on to the afterlife.) was part of Anubis' job to get him where he belonged. When VoicePlay was touring, Earl had a close call with a ruptured appendix and that led to this scenario. It wasn't long after that he (an original member of 20 yrs) left for personal reasons. The fellow beside the bed you put the gold coin around his neck (pay for his trip to the underworld) is his spouse. You'll see him gossiping in a group in Boy Bands.

First, the gentleman with Earl is his husband. He also appeared (with Geoff, Layne and Eli’s wives) in the Boybands video. The part where they were standing around talking about ‘his big wallet.’ Layne and Eli pulled bits from Queen’s catalog of music specifically to tell a story. This was just after Earl had a health scare while they were on tour. Aside from Eli mentioning Freddy Mercury’s interest in mythology, the rest of this comment is based on the video and my own research as an amateur student of mythology: Anubis (Egyptian) (J None), Cerberus (Greek) (Layne) and Yama Nirvana (East Asian and Buddhist) (Eli) are all guardians that convey souls to the underworld. There is visible tension in the video between them and Geoff’s character, Baron Samedi (Haitian Voudou). Baron is the master of the dead AND the giver of life. A person will not die if Baron refuses to dig their grave. So while the others want to get on with it, it’s the Baron’s decision. It’s only right that he is the last one to face Earl before Earl’s return to his life.

Others have pointed out that Earl's medallion is taken as payment by Baron. A small detail i adore is that just before the cane slam, Baron glances down at the medallion. He sees that Earl has the fee for resurrection. (Also the lyrics "I've paid my dues" could be a reference to this need to pay for Baron's resurrection) I also interpret that cane slam as Baron declaring to the others that he is undecided, or that he is judging if Earl will be resurrected. Before it, they are weary of Baron and visibly draw back which he makes his judgement, but not confrontational. It is after that slam that they get aggressive. And then Baron begins to turn away as Earl "banishes" him. He was accepting Earl's desire to return to the living. Addition: When the others go to strike Earl with their weapons, therefore claiming his soul for their afterlife, Baron's cane is what stops them. He is basically telling them no.

Also.... Geoff Castellucci released his march video on his Patreon yesterday .It is absolutely amazingly beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. He brought back his ghost cowboys from his "Ghost Riders In The Sky" video. I'm guessing he'll release it to KZfaq on the 8th. If not the 15th.

Cannot imagine how to select only a few Queen songs... Reportedly, the part of Earl came about after he needed an emergency appendectomy while on tour. Oh, the boy bands one is a delight.

I really enjoyed your reaction and appreciation for this theatrical mashup (the other Voice Players will give you more great detailed info on the storyline here) but you had the general idea and understanding of it. Yes, if you enjoy mashups like this you will love Voice Play's "Boy Bands In 5 Minutes". Other very different mashups from Voice Play that you would enjoy are "Road Trip" and "A Crimpella" (both older Voice Play lineup) and their "Mission Impossible/Jingle Bells" is very different.

It's probaly too late to warn you but once you get into VoicePlay there's no turning back. This came about when Earl had a health scare on tour so they came up with this story of the gods of the underworld fighting over his soul, with Baron having the choice to take him or save him. And in the end of course they all lost him. It helps if you know something about various countries' mythologies. ANUBIS, Egyptian god of death. By weighing the heart of a deceased person against Ma'at (or "truth"), who was often represented as an ostrich feather, Anubis dictated the fate of souls. YAMA, is a deity of death, and the underworld who predominantly features in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. GUARDIAN is Norse God Heimdall, The Guardian and Sentinel of Asgard. And BARON , presumably Baron Samedi, one of the gods of Haitian Voodoo.

Another great singer and interpreter of Queen is Tommy Johansson. Take a listen to his metal cover of The Show Must Go On and Bohemian Rhapsody. The gentleman at the end was the real life husband of Earl.

This is actually the 4th video of a kidnap series they did. The guy in the beginning and end is Earl s husband. He is also in their Boy Bands video along with the guys wives. The first 3.... Trapped.... Panic in 4 minutes parts 1&2 (4 minutes total). Live funny videos of Voiceplay... Road Trip..... Chicken Song.... Elvira.

Ah, so my "theory" has been fully interwoven then? Not to sound like a jerk, but I'm fairly certain I was the one who first commented that maybe this was the aftermath of Panic, and later Billie Eilish, I can't swear to it of course, but I do remember commenting that on a reaction, and a lot of people liking the idea. But maybe someone else came up with the same idea, too.

@@DravenGal I hears it directly from Geoff and Voiceplay on Patreon a year or so ago. They were jokingly talking about kidnapping J None and doing a kidnap video with Cesar. The only kidnap video he didn't mention was Mission Jingle Bells. Which isn't part of the kidnap series but is amazingly awesome nonetheless.

The guy who ripped hus heart out was Anubis from Egyptian mythology. The lord of death, the guide of souls. I am sure the others were similar.

Eli, Layne and J None are deities of death, trying to bring Earl's soul to the afterlife. (this was recorded after a real life health scare for Earl) Geoff plays Baron, a gatekeeper of sorts, who is not convinced that Earl is ready to die yet, but the other 3 are trying to convince Earl that he is ready to die. So they are basically battling over Earl's soul. Earl ends up deciding he is not ready to die and "defeats" the deities and returns to life where his husband awaits him.

I would also point out that at the start of the video, Nick places a metal coin or medallion around Earl's neck. Currency like this was often placed on or with the dead to ensure their passage into the afterlife. Notice that at the end of the video, "Baron" who is not only a god of death but creation and can heal (Haitian Voodoo) is the last of the gods to disappear before Earl returns to the world of the living. When he wakes, the medallion/coin is GONE, likely taken by Baron in exchange for Earl's healing. A couple more hints that Baron wants to see Earl make his own choice given his situation... he is often on the other side of Earl from the rest of the gods, almost as if keeping watch and protecting Earl while the others argue over him. And during "Under Pressure", Baron's skull cane prevents the weapons of the other gods (mostly Guardian) from making contact with Earl, giving him a chance to "break free" and "play the game", having a hand in his own destiny Adding another moment to this: During Earl's heartfelt rendition of "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" ("When I'm not with you/think of me always/I'll miss you...") where it seems like he's lost hope of seeing Nick again, the gods all come in with "It's so easy... when you know the rules... to play the game..." They're hinting that he still has a chance, IF he can figure out how to fight back and outsmart them. After a moment, he does! Hence the epic climax to Bohemian Rhapsody, followed by The Show Must Go On. In the end Baron seems almost pleased with Earl's success, taking the medallion and leaving Earl to find his way back to Nick!

They left the story here somewhat open to interpretation, and I've seen a number of interesting theories. My impression is that Earl personally is just a bystander caught in the middle of a long-running dispute between these afterlife deities, who aren't necessarily good or evil or for or against Earl, but have their own agendas and their own duties and functions that sometimes come into conflict. Eli's character in particular clearly had some kind of beef with Geoff's, who is identified as both a voodoo deity _and_ a Dark Angel--I've always taken Eli's line "Are you happy, are you satisfied/how long can you stand the heat?" to mean something like "Yeah, laugh all you want, big guy, and see where it gets you. How's the weather in Hell this time of year?" ETA: Also meant to say, THANK YOU for stopping to read the character descriptions. I've seen quite a few reactors let them pass by unnoticed and then not pay any attention to the story, but like you said, they're there for a reason!

I agree stopping and reading really helps people understand where the story line is going. The same reactors that don't often went on and made comments about how they would have done this song or that song instead or they should have done it thus way to make it better, completely destroying the the storyline. It took Layne and Eli time to get/find what they needed then arrange so it flowed smoothly.

Hmmm, how about reacting to some Adam Lambert, Queen's current lead singer? Or, for something completely different but still music related, The Hillywood Show musical parodies? They're amazing, fan-funded but most are as polished as any movie or show, and there's a ton to choose from, from Harry Potter to Doctor Who to Twilight to Sui***e Squad to LOTR to Warm Bodies, so there's something for everyone! Their (first) Supernatural Parody has something like 22 million views, plus some extra special guests. Their earlier stuff is a little less polished, but is still pretty impressive. I recommend starting with the LOTR one, Sean Astin himself tweeted how much he loved it, and if you can't trust Samwise Gamgee, who can you trust?

As a few people said J.None is the god of Death in Egyptology which is a Jackal his job is to weight the heart to see how pure you have lived your life if you are pure person the scales should be balance which send you to field of reeds but if unbalance you go to the duat which is there hell. They all different religions of Death which a few people said the others to I just know the Egypt one as I mythology geek which I looked up ever time as a kid. A few games that go into to the mythology is the Assassin Creed games like Assassin Creed Origins is Egypt with a bit Greece cross over as they a few the same Gods. 🤩

Earl was dying. He faces 4 Death Angels. Anubis is Egyptian. He weighs the heart against a feather. If it is the same, the person goes to Heaven. Anyway, Earl decided not to go with any of them, and returns to life.
