The Coronation Choir.
Zadok the Priest is one of Handel's Coronation anthems. One of Handel's best known works, Zadok the Priest has been sung prior to the anointing of the sovereign at the coronation of every British monarch since its composition and has become recognised as a British patriotic anthem. It was composed for the coronation of King George II in 1727.
LYRICS:
Zadok the Priest and Nathan the Prophet anointed Solomon King.
And all the people rejoic'd, and said:
"God save The King, long live The King, may The King live for ever!
Amen, Hallelujah!"

To see the King being Anointed in a simple white shirt, on his knees, just a mortal man before God, to the music of Zadok the Priest is one of the most moving things I have ever seen. It was truly breathtaking.

The problem is we didn't see the anointing. The most solemn religious part of the ceremony, and they did it behind closed doors, so to speak. I was extremely disappointed.

@@andyherman6596 What is this obsession with seeing everything these days? The anointing is the most sacred and deeply personal moment for the new monarch, how can you begrudge a few minutes privacy at the most important moment in his life during what was otherwise the most publicly accessible coronation ceremony in 1000 years? The nice thing about a monarchy is that one's personal opinions don't count! You are rather required, by definition, to put up with whatever you get 😜 There have, of course, been some horrors. Think George IV, for example. Strangely perhaps, the institution seems to be stronger than its exemplars. Of course, the occasional EIIR or GVIR help spruce the place up a bit! In short: I entirely agree with you, and I wouldn't call myself a royalist, either (just a cheapskate that wants a relatively inexpensive figurehead head of state and something that is beyond mere popularity).

@@justonecornetto80 dude we’re interested in your history. We just can’t remove the American perspective so easily. 😂 I wasn’t mocking the Coronation in fact I’m glad it still happens as it is also a reminder of American history. Many old aspects of British life can be found within the cultural heartbeat of Americans. As much as we might not want to admit it. We would not have existed without the British empire’s world domination. In America most of our history lessons focus generally on Europe before the revolution. In fact I think I was taught more European history than American history. Nothing was really taught past ww2. Britain was always given a special focus in our culture as America did originate from it. I remember learning about princesses being real when OUR news stations were live streaming prince Williams’s wedding. Although for the most part Americans view it as curiosity. I knew several on this side of the pond who did experience sadness when the queen died. We still have royalist as well. Despite the revolution ending 200 years ago. In short I find the stability of the crown something the British should celebrate. Their is research that constitutional monarchies develop happier people on average when compared to republics. If one day the great American experiment, as it was once called, fails. Well… I would finish that thought but American pride is still American pride. I’ll try to sill. In a way maybe we could find ourselves more in line with our northern neighbor. Than we currently do today. Should all things truly, TRULY hit the fan

@@em3000 The only "proof" we have, besides biblical accounts, of King David, and his son King Solomon, are the discoveries of some royal seals mentioning their names and some shards from approximately 967 BCE.. Assuming that King Solomon did exist, there are some modern "claimants" to his lineage -- The Ethiopian Royal Family, and several Jewish Hasidic Dynasties claim to be descended from King David or King Solomon. In reality, however, there is no way of telling who exactly is descended from this two Kings or Tribal Leaders of the past. However, we can be certain, looking at King Charles well documents genealogy from the past 500 years, he does not have any Jewish ancestors (none recorded), nor does he have any ancestors from the Ethiopian Royal Family. However, you can make an argument that the Jewish Rabbi, Dr. Jacob Snow, who circumcized King Charles as an infant (he did all the royals of a generation) is probably descended from whomever did the same with King David and King Solomon. That is as far as a connection you will get.

Other than that it was a service for the coronation of a King and a Queen (and therefore had quite a lot of bits that were specific to that purpose), the general style and flavour of the Coronation service, the sensibility, the dignity, the execution, were very much in and at the core of the broad Anglican catholic tradition as expressed and fostered by the English church desiring to keep a somewhat broad interpretation on certain aspects of liturgy and the bible.

@@BiBoetzke it's an ancient ritual of the man chosen to be King, it used to be on a battlefield and the people who supported the King would bring an item of support, or gift, like gold, myrrh, stirrups, cloth, spurs, knowledge, spears, whatever was useful, so that at least one amongst many could represent the country fully kitted out and proudly show what the country was capable of. Same concept is if you have 20 Chieftains with 1,000 gold pieces, that's all each could spend. But pool the money into a common-wealth, then all of a sudden you've got 20,000 gold pieces and can trade for something really useful for the community. It's the opposite of flexing, greed, selfishness. Of course, in the wrong hands you could have a president like Ceasescu, Mugabe, Muammar Gaddafi, Marcos etc using the community common-wealth to buy their wife shoes! Oh my goodness, this piece of music blows my mind every time I hear it. Seeing the King covered by screens before anointing, which is a private affair not for general viewing, then the fabulous Penelope Mordaunt MP as sword holder, her arms steady as though made of oak, motionless and gorgeous.... It all just sets my head spinning. Thank you a million times to our ancestors, and especially George Fridric Handel for always providing the most appropriate, regal and respectful music, perfect for each royal occasion by his wise design... It's all so beautiful and quietly dramatic as another new Monarch is confirmed as the Head Of State and the head of the church (defender of the faith), and he begins his reign to serve his people, just as he swore to in his investiture of 1970. I for one think he will be a great King. He commands respect, has very strong and original opinions, and is not afraid to step up to the plate when necessary. God Save The King.

It demonstrates nothing about whether a god exists or whether a king is a servant of said god or just a member of a parasitic family that got lucky enough to get lots of people, without the ability to think, to like them because they can't tell the difference between the two. @TheVerosyv Colonialism? You'll haven't talk to the Americans, New Zealanders, Australians and Canadians about that. Britain has no colonies. The government is spending £32,000 a year for every household in the country, and still people want more. They always will.

They sang to the standard routinely heard at the preeminent cathedrals around England and at some other parts of the UK and the commonwealth, and on this occasion they once again delivered the goods. :) It is not unheard of for the service music sung at certain cathedrals and chapels to be perfectly and beautifully rendered for more than 6 months without even so much as a minor flaw - such is their talent, their skill, their dedication, their practice, and the mentorship of musical directors who are steeped in the interpretive traditions that make up the English Cathedral Musical Tradition.

I have grown up being so familiar to this epic choral piece. To see it played in its intended context this past weekend was very special indeed and very moving, even though you couldn't see the actual anointing. I found the ancient parts of the ceremony like the pledges to the people and oaths so moving and I'm very proud of our traditions. God Save the King and his Queen!

The music has such a sense of building anticipation to it. You feel like we’re really approaching a significant moment as it plays. And it pulls back a couple of times before going again to even greater highs, and of course then you get the epic explosion of the choir. This, paired with the Charles being divested of his finery, piece by piece, also has a sense of preparing for something, building to something. And of course we are - building to the anointing of a king. And the cherry on the cake is the very act of Charles humbling himself before god, which stirs the emotions alone. What a moment

Zadok the priest was the motivation behind the UEFA champions league anthem. Tony Britton composed the UEFA champions anthem in 1992 to reflect the importance of competition.

Delicious Johnny Thompson😋😍 ! More seriously the part of the coronation when the King appears divested of his ceremonial garb, a simple Christian humbly kneeling in front of God is very moving ☺ .

Handel was without doubt a genius. This music captures the regal nature of a British Coronation. Decades of research, centuries of tradition and the best minds in the Empire collaborate to make this stunning tapestry, and the music fits perfectly. Add the most important ingredient, Penny Mordaunt MP, the sexiest sword bearer ever, and you have the perfect recipe for a regal event of massive proportions. What other world event would be watched by a billion plus audience?

The last time this piece of music was performed in its proper setting was seventy years ago. The impression it makes is much greater than hearing it performed as a concert piece.
