Zahara de la Sierra is one of the lesser-known Spanish villages but definitely one of our favourites. The village nestles on the mountainside, dominated by its castle, which perches impossibly on top of the mountain.
We wander through peaceful winding streets, taking in the beautiful white buildings. We pass a small plaza where diners enjoy their lunch in the sun, and historic buildings such as the Church of Santa Maria la Mesa and Capilla de Ntra.Sra.de los Dolores.
Our walk finishes on a quiet side street with spectacular views over the village and surrounding mountains.
Zahara de la Sierra can be found in Spain’s southern Andalucia, around a 2-hour drive from the Costa del Sol's Malaga or a 1-hour 20-minute drive from Cadiz.
Zahara de la Sierra is one of Spain's "Pueblos Blancos, " or white village. These are a series of picturesque towns nestled in the Andalusian hills in southern Spain, known for their distinctive white-washed buildings.
This traditional architectural style, with its origins dating back to the region's Moorish past, helps to reflect the sun's rays. This keeps the buildings cool during the hot summers and adds a unique character to these towns.
