Күн бұрынIn 2019, Berklee College of Music had the privilege of presenting Ustad Zakir Hussain with an Honorary Doctorate. The tribute concert “Zakir Hussain Meets Berklee” incorporated a myriad of musical elements from Zakir Ji’s life’s journey, varying in styles, instrumentation and presentation. It gives us great pleasure to share with you Zakir Ji’s improvised Tabla Solo as our first feature from this concert.
About the Berklee Indian Ensemble: Founded in 2011 by faculty member Annette Philip, the Berklee Indian Ensemble is one of the largest and most diverse ensembles at Berklee. Apart from performing original compositions and arrangements, the Berklee Indian Ensemble tours internationally; presents a wide array of South Asian folk, classical, and contemporary music; and has collaborated with various world-renowned artists, garnering over 180 million views for their viral videos to date.

I remember him from an ad they used to show on TV. I was just a kid then. He played Tabla and then said "Wah Taj". I was never exposed to his music but somehow when I saw the thumbnail I had a strange urge to see this video. Ah I love his playing.

This is like listening to a Bach fugue. There are multiple simultaneous voices maintaining their phrasing and integrity throughout the performance -- no matter how energetic or subdued; simple or intricate. Remarkable depth here.

I have seen him in his old videos as a young man playing Tabla & today he has become an old man..... But his spirit hasn't gone down a bit. These people dedicated their entire life to music & never got commercialized. He belongs to the last generation of people who dedicated their entire life to Hindustani music. Zakir Hussain, Amjad Ali, Pt.Shivkumar, Hariprasad Chourasia are some of the last living legends from that generation. With these maestros, that marvelous era will come to an end. So sad.... Our country's young generation do not even know about these great legends. We can learn about seriousness, hardwork, love & dedication from these maestros.

His ability to control the pitch of the bayan is incredible, and I love how dynamically he plays - he is never simply banging on them. I would love to have seen this whole concert, as I see more tabla and other Indian instruments there.

I met with Zakir after his programm in Lucknow with Shivkumar Sharma (and even had coffee with him) about 25 years ago, definitely one of the best tabla player! and then in Montreux with Shakti/John McLaughlin who is my favorite guitarist since my teenage 😍Pls listen to Pt. Lacchu Maharaj from Varanasi, unfortunately passed away 4 years ago, the Wizard of tablas 🥰 and there is another great representative of banaras gharana, Sanju Sahai... if you really love tablas, you must listen to them 🙏

Tabla Guru Pandit Samrat Kakkeri always taught that playing this kaida "Dha Dha Tita Dha Dha Tun Na + Na Na Tita Dha Dha Dhin Na" for practice 1 hour every day, makes a tabla player very strong and able to play anything in tabla solo and accompiment. He taught that this makes the hand very strong.
