Zakk Wylde is a stalwart of the metal scene, playing with Black Sabbath's Ozzy Osborne for many years, founding his own band Black Label Society, and now touring with Texas icons Pantera.
In this On The Record interview, a sunny Zakk shares what it's like paying tribute to Dimebag Darrell on stage, his new Bezerkus fest and why he learned classical guitar for his Ozzy Osborne audition. He also shares why he called Sharon Osbourne 'Mom' and turned to her for business advice.

Zakk’s guitar tone on No More Tears changed my life and opened my eyes. It’s a wall of heavenly tone with his Boss overdrive, a JCM 800 with a 4X12.

He used to say I don't care about the money I don't care about the fame. All I want to do is drink beer and play my guitar. Not sure how long he's been sober now. It's been a few years and he sure sounds like he's got a balanced life and seems to be happy. If you are an alcoholic and you get sober there's nothing like it to compare it to. Happy for him and his family.

His advice at the end was pure gold about dealing with clubs and the business side. If you agreed to something before playing a club stick to your guns and don't back down.

This is the hardest working man in Rock n Roll. Ive had the pleasure of seeing him with ' The Old Man' in Anchorage, Alaska at the Sullivan. Fuckin AMAZING. Also with BLS in Billings. And with Zakk Sabbath at Rockin' the Rivers in Montana also. Zakk comes to kick ass ( WOW, Zakk just said kick ass, while I typing) He is a Fucking National Treasure. Thanks for the Interview Bro. I remember No Rest For The Wicked when it came out I bought it and got home and cranked it up and I remember me and my Brother we're like holy shit who is this guitarist it ain't Jake E Lee we could just tell being guitarist ourselves with the vibrato and sound we never even heard of Zack yet and we found out real quickly when we went to see Ozzy at Shoreline ampatheator that this guy's already making his point very clear that he's a guitar God ! 🎸🔥

No rest for the wicked is to me the best Ozzy album that came out, which I like the other albums too, but not as good as I do No Rest For The Wicked.

Love Mr. Zakk! Goddamn he is amazing! How he keeps up with Pantera, and Zakk Sabath, and the doom crew.(B.l.s.)He is just inspirational. How does he he do this? He is the hardest working guy, like wtf! He’s just an anomaly. Love him. Just a good dude, and he takes it less in media, but, he’s a. Different kinda guitar player and just inspired.

No Rest For The Wicked and No More Tears are my favorites because the pinch-harmonics were kept to a minimum 😁 Zakk is the king of vibrato and two-note per string pentatonic shred but that is just my opinion 😊

I was working at one of the guitar shops in NJ when Zakk was going through the audition process...great guy, and was insane on the guitar and I remember telling him "you're getting the gig"...he was actually thinking he might not!

I like how Zakk talks about vibrato . I think it’s sorta like handwriting you can focus on it and clean it up but it’s still your vibrato. You can try to copy someone else’s but it’s still going to be your vibrato trying to emulate someone else’s.

Nice man. Great interview. Love hearing Father Wylde talk guitars and music. Love the way he talks man. I’d love to hang out with this dude and jam out on guitars. I’ve been playing since 1976 and still Zakk is one of my all time favorites on the fiddle. Good stuff

I am the only person that I know ( I live in the south) that has ever listened to Frank Marino. No wonder we never had good concerts around here when I was younger. If I mentioned Mohogany Rush, everyone would ask me Do you mean Rush? I wanted to slap them. Thank you, Zakk, for mentioning one of my favorites. Oh, let's not forget Robin Trower. I also thought Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher were good players too.

Cool interview! Pinch harmonic legend. Check my patented vertical scallop fretboard mod. The edge of the fretcorner plucks the string for infinite vibrato sustain / new bends and adds extra notes to pulloffs. 🎸🤘🏽

Love Zakk! Great interview! However I have a small disagreement with his point about social media and music. IMHO I don’t think Van Halen would have happened as a band if Eddie had been on Instagram or the tube. There would have been no incentive for him to share the stage…And while the market is larger now and more diverse, I’d argue that with musicians being so ubiquitous, it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chafe from a fans POV. Also gone are large recording contracts which means even fewer people are ever going to be able to do music full time. Still love the guy though! Zakk attack!

Loved his work with Ozzy, Pride & Glory and Black Label Society, but I am vehemently against him stepping into Dime's shoes and still calling the band Pantera. Vinnie himself clearly stated when he was alive that he couldn't see Pantera continuing on with Zakk replacing Dime, and I agree. If this was intended as a tribute, it would be billed as such, but it keeps being billed solely as Pantera, and that's not right. Even Rex was quoted as saying he could see this new incarnation of band recording new music as Pantera, and that would be going way too far if there's any truth to that. Either re-bill this as A Tribute To Dime & Vinnie or A Tribute To Pantera, or stop this shameless cash grab altogether!

Honestly man, went to see the first “Pantera” show in PCB 2023 and I’ll tell you what it may have not been real pantera but you could definitely feel dime and vinnies spirit was there. Me who has never seen dime or vinnie live getting the opportunity to see what’s left was a special moment. Rex,Phil,Zakk,and Charlie all did justice for the music. Keeping the spirit alive is what it’s all about. Forever RIP Dime and Vinnie!

@@TGSTKLivesOn Well, I've never seen The Beatles live, so should surviving members Paul and Ringo get together with a bunch of scabs and bill themselves as The Beatles? You see where I'm going with this? You change a few ingredients, and the flavor of the soup changes too. At some point, when a band is past its prime and key original members are not there anymore, the band really needs to take stock of what they're doing and realize it all a farce that smacks of a cash grab. That should be the end of the road right there and an opportunity for the band to bow out gracefully instead of shit on its legacy. Are the members of Pantera, Quiet Riot, Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd reading this? For their own sake, they should.

Zakk does not have to lug anything around…he has roadies…this is not the same for the “regular” people anymore- Fractal- Kemper- Neural Quad Cortex- are literally the easiest way to carry your rig and not end up with back issues!!
