Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda dies aged 97

Күн бұрынKenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s founding president and liberation hero, has died at a military hospital in Lusaka where he was being treated for pneumonia, his son, Kambarage, said on Thursday. He was 97.
Kaunda ruled Zambia from 1964, when the southern African nation won its independence from Britain, until 1991, and afterwards become one of Africa’s most committed activists against HIV/AIDS.
“I am sad to inform (members) we have lost Mzee. Let’s pray for him,” Kambarage said on the late president’s Facebook page.
The former president had been feeling unwell and had been admitted to the Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka earlier this week.

I respect him for "the most African" thing he did, when he conceded defeat and handed over the reigns to Fredrick Chiluba. The Zambians will forever be indebted to you for this legacy. I hope the spirit of political fair play and leadership renewal continues in Zambia. RIP

I was born in then Northern Rhodesia, and I grew up in what became Zambia. I remember Ba Kenneth Kaunda with fondness and respect. May you RIP, Sir. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, my fellow Zambians 🇿🇲

ONE ZAMBIA! Kenneth Kaounda is a Great man and God knows this!! I love to watch him affectionately singing to his people, after scurrying to the podium to address them. And he spoke with endearment and love in his eyes. I am glad his later years were peaceful. I wish him a sweet transition, and that Zambia recaptures the spirit of ONENESS, and prospers.🌹

He preached unity amongst Zambians and fought for independence. He is the reason we don't have tribal issues in Zambia with 72 tribes living side by side peacefully. RIP🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
