I made a video on the wash water system and how to repair the impeller. Nothing broken on our machine. We fix things as they break. Now I am starting to make videos on repairs and general maintenance.

Those old HDB’s are great machines when taken care of. These machines are becoming less and less nowadays their getting scrapped out. These machines were some of the first that dumped snow that were produced by zamboni so their kind of a historical model.

I cut ice for the San Diego Gulls 2 - 3 years ago and drove one of these. It was the "hand-me-down" relic model compared to the newer machine we got, but goddamn if that thing wasn't a reliable work horse. The newer one (can't remember the model number; looked like a 552 but propane) had constant problems with electric and spitting but that old HBD just wouldn't stop being quality and reliable.

I have been driving the zamboni since I was 16 I am 62 now. I got to work at 6 different rinks over my lifetime. Got to resurface the ice for the San Jose Sharks when they came for a summer camp at the rink I worked at in Nevada. And got to resurface the ice for the Montreal Canadians when they came to practice at the rink I worked at in Southern California. Before they played the LA Kings. Believe me I know Everything there is to know about how the zamboni works.

The doctors use glycol to clean up your pipes; the day before a colonoscopy you drink like a gallon of it and soon you’ll feel the effects! Other than flushing everything in your system it is harmless. It is used to heat driveways to melt the snow/ice and it is also used to freeze the ice in skate rinks because it’s low freezing point. Whole liquid you can pump it and distribute the thermic energy. You need a furnace or a freezer to suit your application. I’m thinking of using it to heat the radiant floor in my garage and to keep a good ambient temperature in my greenhouse.

So, get the wash water tank patched up and working. No such thing as a crappy machine just crappy maintenance.

Nice old machine! It’s wild how the design hasn’t changed all that much! Is that a actually blade for Zamboni? I would use the Front holes. What is the model number and serial number on this?

Yes it is a cool machine! Yes there is a rather heavy very sharp blade that cuts a layer off the ice. Im sorry but I no longer work at this facility and do not have any more specific info on it

Can a zamboni drive backwards (reverse)?

Yes it can! However, it's a no no to reverse while you are resurfacing ice. The ice is cut with a blade, cold water is also applied with the cut ice to fill in large gaps. Then, there is an auger, with a squeegee and suction pump to remove the ice shavings and pooling water. Finally, hot water is applied behind the "conditioner" (the assembly that includes the auger, cutting blade, squeegee and suction pump). There is also a piece of felt that gets dragged behind the machine after the hot water is applied. Generally its a no no to stop on the ice while the water is on, and/or while cutting/conditioning. If you where to reverse during conditioning, there would be a pile of icy slush, and a lip in the ice. Fun Fact! The machine is designed to make much tighter right turns, then left turns. There is also a "bounce wheel" mounted on the front left corner of the machine. The idea is, if you don't cut your turn hard enough to the right, you would gently use that wheel to bounce off the boards. That is the better option over stopping. A good operator rarely has to use the bounce wheel.
