This video was originally recorded by Giovanni Di Federico on a hard-to-find Facebook page he runs which only Italians or Italian bagpipe fans will ever find. Trying to make a wrongly-kept secret known by uploading this to reach out to wider audiences because nobody would otherwise know how insanely cool Italian bagpipes are.
Not familiar with Italian bagpipes? I encourage you to download this plain text dictionary I put together about these instruments. You will seriously learn a ton of things you never knew, and I don't want this to be entirely secret so this is my best way of getting the word out. This link will be updated whenever future modifications to the dictionary are made, so if you don't have the latest version, no worries. Last updated: 12/31/2023

Cool! As a blind person, while visual drawings and paintings might not mean much to me, I've definitely heard of him before. At one of the gardens around town they have a huge bronze sculpture of a horse running which was either one of his works or was inspired by it.

Trying to make a wrongly-kept secret known by uploading this to reach out to wider audiences because nobody would otherwise know how insanely cool Italian bagpipes are, compared to Scottish Highland pipes. Also, honestly I've never learned how to actually video-record as a blind person so I'm taking it from a Facebook page and the original person who recorded it doesn't really care, he won't understand English (I use Google Translator for everything).

Italy has an interesting variety of bagpipes, all on variations of one basic concept: two separate chanters playing two-part, plus drones. This is a unique case in the world of bagpipes, which by itself is extremely wide and varied. Check for bagpipes from almost any European country, from all of North Africa, from around the Persian Gulf and the Arab peninsula, from Black Sea and Caucasus. Wherever people thought "ok, let's join pipes and a bag" they ALWAYS came up with something different!!

@@nicolocrippa8514 Yes, they have those too, but that's not something so unique. Many different musical cultures have come up with the idea of one melody pipe + drone(s). The zampogne with each hand on a separate chanter are something more peculiar, and also, I think that the latter are genuinely alive without interruption of the old oral tradition, whereas the ones with one chanter only revived.

Glad you also love this! Just to warn you I didn't record this. Literally I thought of including videos (instead of just audio files on a black background which I've always done) just to attract more subscribers. Thing is, as a blind person I've never been able to make videos 'cause I obviously can't see, and I'm not living with anyone who can help me with the camera and all that. And I learned the hard way most people are more reactive to visual stuff which is a definite BOO in the blind world. Plus, as I mentioned to someone else, this wasn't a recording I made but it was on a hard-to-find Facebook page run by Italian pipers which only Italians or Italian bagpipe fans will ever find. Trying to make a wrongly-kept secret known by uploading this to reach out to wider audiences because nobody would otherwise know how insanely cool Italian bagpipes are, compared to Scottish Highland pipes. Ya SCARED me! If a girl were to pick up that exact zampogna that would be the near DEATH of me!!!!!! See, for some reason, I've always been afraid of / scared of female pipers ever since I started learning. I literally thought that the violin for example, at least the classical iteration, was an exclusively female instrument, so that's why I never took it up. As an example of gendered instrumentalists, the classical violin in my experience is pretty much a strictly female-dominant instrument (I only know 2 other guys who play it). And the flute too. Literally EVERY SINGLE flute player in my class cohort were all girls, so I thought, "No, I'm not playing the flute 'cause I'm a guy." same thing. "I'm not playing violin because ONLY females play it." at least back then. Sure, I know of some famous male violinists from the record days, but I'm hard pressed to hear of any modern male world-class flute or violinist in our modern day. Now I've never really had a gender-based opinion on the recorder 'cause I haven't really heard too many professional recorder players growing up, so I thought it was more of a gender-neutral thing. Same with piano, growing up with fellow students of both genders, I didn't think only one gender played piano either. Bagpipes though? When I met Sophia and Bonnie, they scared the LIVING MAZZILLO out of me! Hearing about girls playing the bagpipes which I thought was an exclusively male instrument forever? Well, Anne Kuypers but she wasn't that great. So I meant more like in the top tier. And then of course, when I discovered that Maria Varalli was the first female Italian bagpipe player in 2018 that scared me a little, but it wasn't until I heard about Lucia Quatrocchi being the first female to ever play a bass sized Italian bagpipe that this was the ultimate scare. Even worse, she was with two GUYS on the soprano instrument, and honestly, the guys who aren't makers of that instrument pretty much just SUCK! So it's the weirdest thing in the world to have a female playing a low pitched instrument and a guy playing a high-pitched instrument kind of like Lucia and her friends. The video of Lucia is also on my channel, maybe type in 'Lucia Italian bagpipe'.

Some rare examples of zampogne this size literally add a tenor-zampogna's sopranina/sopranino, making a "sopranissima", with three drones at three different octaves, where the sopranissimo sounds one octave higher than the sopranino / highest soprano chanter note. @@The_Gallowglass TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now here's the thing though. With double reeds which power this zampogna, the later they start sounding given an increasing amount of pressure, the louder they will be. In my opinion, a zampogna would sound best if the highest of the 2 drones is either the weakest reed or eliminated altogether, followed by the two chanters coming in together, and the tenor drone being loudest (because it's categoricly weaker than the other 3 pipes, especially if it's the quietest reed). On most sets of Italian pipes, the tenor drone is often nonexistent.
