Zane’s on Cameo!!
cameo.com/zanenavratilpickleb... and Ben Johns are renowned for their dominance on the court, the duo has continuously pushed the boundaries of what is achievable with an expansive pickleball playbook.
In a recent exhibition match, the world's number one right-handed doubles team showcased their versatility by embracing the challenge of playing exclusively with their left hands. The rules were clear: any employment of their dominant right hand would result in a fault. With the stakes high and expectations soaring, the brothers set out to demonstrate their skill and adaptability on the court.
Ben Johns, the younger of the two siblings, has etched his name in the annals of pickleball history with his unparalleled achievements. A prodigy in multiple racquet sports from a young age, Johns' foray into pickleball began in 2016 during a vacation in Florida. Little did he know that this encounter would mark the inception of a remarkable career that continues to enhance pickleball for countless enthusiasts.
Within months of his introduction to the sport, Johns made waves by securing fifth place in Men’s Pro Singles at the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships. His meteoric rise continued as he clinched gold medals at prestigious events, including the Riverbend RV Resort Pickleball Tournament and the Canadian Nationals. However, it was his unprecedented triple crown victories at the Tournament of Champions and the U.S. Open that solidified his status as a pickleball prodigy.
With over 80 titles on the PPA Tour, including 15 triple crowns, Johns' dominance is unparalleled. His undefeated streaks in men's singles and mixed doubles attest to his exceptional skill and unwavering determination. Beyond his on-court exploits, Johns' partnership collaboration with JOOLA Pickleball underscores his influence in shaping the sport's future.
While Ben's ascent to pickleball stardom has been nothing short of extraordinary, his older brother Collin has carved his own path to success. With a background steeped in tennis, table tennis, and baseball, Collin's transition to pickleball was a natural progression. His professional debut at the 2019 US Open marked the beginning of a fruitful career characterized by perseverance and dedication.
As a regular doubles partner to Ben, Collin amassed over 25 professional titles, showcasing his formidable skills.
Collin's contributions to the pickleball community extend far beyond his achievements. Serving on the Professional Pickleball Registry Board of Directors, he plays a pivotal role in certifying professionals and shaping the sport's future. Additionally, his co-ownership of Pickleball 360 underscores his commitment to fostering growth and development within the pickleball community.

This was a surprisingly interesting match. It's one thing to see the Johns brothers dominate in a match, something else to see them play left-handed... and how well they actually did. I have no doubt that they could practice for a week and then easily dominated the 5.0s. This also made me realize how much strategy is a part of the game, and how the good players can out-think their opponents even if they can't outplay them left-handed.

I’m a lefty. That was fun to watch. I’d give Ben & CJ a 5.0 rating because of their footwork in getting in position to hit, ability to win points on CJ’s serve, Ben’s body bags, and experience on strategy. They would clean up a lot of the missed returns and leaving the ball high.

Playing the off-hand makes you think differently about every shot and notice things about your dominant hand. I normally play lefty, but against my kids I sometimes switch. The first time I did so, I realized how much I change my grip for different shots; I never realized it until I was thinking about how to position the paddle. TL;DR: I'd recommend that everyone try switching hands once in a while to see what you learn about your game.

Would Ben and Colin ever try to win gold left handed in a tournament? I asked Ben when he was in Mesa beginning for the year if he thought he could win gold left handed, he said no. He should try to win gold it would be an accomplish not many could ever do. Plus he has won a lot of gold already right handed. This could be a challenge for him to make things interesting for him again. Don't you think!

Zane perhaps you can help me answer a question man. I play a bit and teach as well. I'm close to a 5.0 DUPR with extremely minimal work put in (played college tennis). I love the game and in trying to understand it more I cannot for the life of me understand why the pros don't serve harder in doubles. In every playing instance i've been in or taught in, serving hard is extremely advantageous and completely (imo from.my limited experience) worth the risk in doubles as well as singles however it still seems like pros are often content to just play serves in at medium speed and i cant get my head around it. I realize theyre playing lefty in this video but i was still surprised to see Guillermo who is clearly a quite good player serving in balls that were mid to low speed.

Super interesting content. The Johns Brothers showcase wise placement no matter what hand they use to play. Their comments to Zane highlight their intelligent gamesmanship. ו note that Ben’s patented backhand roll put away is much weaker with his left hand than his right hand. Question: are they doing this to keep up their own interest in the game or as part of their continuing pickleball development so they can surprise opponents with left-handed shots or two forehands in the middle?

You guys jumping to 5.0 with left hand shows how important court position and anticipation are , you both are world #1 for that reason ! It seems - left hand slow game would put you in trouble . So I would say - 4.75 ish . Sorry John’s! What an impressive serve with left hand 😮. Had fun watching this , very happy to see you doing this . How fun / fortunate it is to play with #1 pros like this . Given an opportunity, I would love to do this ! #pickleball rocks

They struggled to get to the net when serving in the second game. Trying to mostly play one side of their paddles in transition against 5.0+ opponents wasn't working. And then they didn't quite have reliable precision to dig themselves out of trouble with heroic shots.

@saucythighs
@saucythighs Ай бұрын
I'm guessing they've trained it at least a little bit. I don't know about pros but I've found it more natural to switch my left for certain shots. There are those rare shots that, even if you move as fast as you can, you just won't be able to get behind it in time actually backhand it... but switching hands will extend your range just enough. P.S. Just looked it up and saw a clip of Ben Johns doing it in a match.
