Eritrea gained its independence in 1993, after many wars and colonization. This young country fought back and won the 30 year war with Ethiopia. Massawa is a port city along the Red Sea, where a major battle took place between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Massawa is home to the oldest mosque in Africa, and was once home to the last Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie.
A very interesting memorial from the war is located in Asmara, and is referred to as the "tank graveyard". This graveyard is home to thousands of military machinery and equipment that were captured from the defeated Ethiopian army by the Eritrean army, who is also referred to as EPLF.
Also in this video, I show you more of Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. We go bowling at a very unique bowling alley, and I show you where to go for internet. I get experience some of the local traditional food.
Please enjoy the second video of this three part series.
Thank you for watching and please like and subscribe!

We have always existed as a separate country. You began to be called Ethiopian in 1929. We Eritreans were Eritreans during the Italian colony (1800s). Before that, we were known as Deki Mdre Bahri, and before that Adulis, and even before that the Kingdom of Dmt….. I understand why you think we share a history, but let me explain. The Kingdom of Abyssinia was a multi-ethnic empire, but only parts of the Tigrinya-speaking population were involved, not the entire region of present-day Ethiopia. The only similarity we share is some of the same food, nothing else!

Excellent content, you made me miss my lovely country. Just a small correction: the three tanks you saw in Massawa were not Ethiopian tanks captured by Eritrean army. They serve as memorials to the heroic Eritrean fighters who sacrificed their lives while driving those tanks. They were hit by the Ethiopian army while crossing the long road connecting the port, as you might have noticed.
@ZannParker

@meharihabtemariam3035
@meharihabtemariam3035 21 күн бұрын
@@ZannParker to give you a bit back ground about the Tanks; the tanks were captured from the Ethiopians by EPLF (Eritrean people Liberation front). They didn’t have a support as opposed to the then Ethiopian government at that time. The Ethiopians were financed 100% of their military budget from the Soviet’s for almost two decades from 1978 to 1900, till the downfall of the soviet empire (today’s Russia and Eastern European counties). Anyways, long story short, the EPLF almost all their weapons were captured and were gotten from the Ethiopians. There was a saying back then, it says like this, “fighting enemies with their own weapons”. So, not just these Tanks you saw in Massawa, but almost all the weapons Eritrea used to fight in the thirty years struggle for independence from Ethiopia was captured from Ethiopians themselves, which was gifted by the soveits. They fix it, and sometimes repurpose it. After using the Tanks for few years before 1990, Massawa’s liberation year, EPLF assigned the tanks with other ones in liberating the town Massawa in 1990, just one year before liberation of the whole country. At this point, the owners were Eritreans not Ethiopians as you might have thought so. But I can understand your confusion, though. So, during liberating, these three tanks were burnt and attacked with their owners inside them (Eritreans inside them). They were the first Tanks that made through the narrow long road that you have crossed that connects the town with the port. If you cross the narrow road, it means you have control the whole town and marks the liberation of Massawa as a whole. The mere only one single narrow line that connects the port and the town was a very important for the Ethiopians as well, and therefore, they targeted every artillery and every guns they had to this narrow road line. Any military vehicle that attempted to cross that road was mercilessly targeted and shot by multiple artillery, and hence it was a gruesome scene. It was a scene where the roads have changed to red colour because of blood of people. Ethiopian army made sure every Eritrean fighter and every Tanks that tried to pass that narrow road, would be burnt alive. Just to pass this narrow road, 1000 Eritrean fighter has been shot and died, and they sacrificed their only one life forever for the sake independence and freedom. Imagine being told, 1000 US soldiers dying in 48 hours of a war to pass one road. That’s how heavy the price was. After so bloody and brutal fighting, non continuous with bombs non stop, these three tanks made it through the road finally, and opened the gateway to independence, and were the cue for a bright light of freedom to the Eritrean people. That’s why they are honoured in a such a way in memory of the heroins and heroes who fall and sacrificed their life to liberate the town and overall to the whole country. So, the tanks are there not because they’re Ethiopian tanks, but because they were the first ones to made it and burst out through the unfathomable strong hold of the enemy at that time, the Ethiopian army. I hope this explains and gives you a little bit sense to you; as it doesn’t make sense to honour the tanks of your enemies, at all. So, that’s why they are there, not because they are captured from the Ethiopian army, which you might have thought so. Cheers

Our dear visitor first of all thank you for visiting Eritrea...For the time being may be you surprised about the electricity and the Internet....let me tell you something....when you have two legs...you can't be on two different roofs.....this means we were on sanctions for the last twenty years .by west countries and we were defending our country from weyane......so you have to realize the fact. And you will shock after few years ,the development of Ertrea......our feature is bright. At last tell to your followers ......it is peaceful country. Thank you again.

You are as beautiful as Eritrea. Stunning 😂 Eritrea is one of the safest countries in the world. Due to the hostility of several countrues against it. In the past its been invaded by five countries for its strategic location and massive natural rosources. The current sunction is part of the hostility. Eritrea is very serious on its security. Hard viss, limited internet, strong military.... everything has a reason.

Lots of respect darling for sharing your experience of Eritrea with the world! Your contents are perfect. Just a comment here: the 3-tanks-memorial in Massawa. They were of the Eritreans. They opened the way to the port by heading thru the "Sigalet Qetan" bridge during the 1990 war. The 3 commanders of the tanks knew their fate was death as the Ethiopians held the other part tight. But they paved the way for the rest of the Eritrean forces so that they could advance further deeper into the town. Sacrificing their lives, the 3 commanders played a crucial role in breaking the lines of the Ethiopian army. Thank you!

Thank you for watching. The tanks were captured by the EPLF from the Ethiopian army. there is even a sign underneath stating this.
@MikyBerhane-vj1wf
@MikyBerhane-vj1wf Ай бұрын
You're right. The EPLF captured them in late 1970s. But what i'm saying is the reason they're commemorated for is not the fact that they were captured from Ethiopians. But because of their heroism in the battle to liberate the port city of Massawa.

There is so much left to do in Eritrea and am sure you felt as if you were back to the future (past) but given the resilience of the Eritrean ppl, we will get there in no time once the outside threat to our sovereignty is neutralised, lasting peace is restored and Uncle Sam leaves us alone. Hope you enjoyed you stay and thanks for uploading.

@@ZannParker - hmm you remembered me 😇. Ohh, I started with part 2😂😂😂. For some reason, I didn’t receive notification that you posted. I saw a part of your clip on TikTok and came to KZfaq to check and ended up watching part 2. People shouldn’t be upset. You cant show what doesn’t exist and you have done well. After all, you are a traveler, not a political analyst. The love that you have for the Eritrean people is amazing. I can’t say the same about other travelers who travel for the sole purpose to show only the bad side of a country/ society. I hope you come back again when things get normal , basic necessities available and restrictions are lifted. I look forward to part 3🙂 and you stay well until then.

Hello, Zann Parker. We found it interesting how you explained the information and some short but important parts of our history. Thank you so much. We are very eager to hear from you about establishing the relationship between Eritrea and the USA. How did the US get a military and naval base in Eritrea? Why was Eritrea annexed to Ethiopia? why did the Eritreans fight for 30 years long for their independence? Why the US accepted the independence and freedom of Eritrea after 30 years of war? Thank you very much for your cooperation.

First of all, 🙏 for your vlogs #ZannParker, I've never learned so much from a short video. I never knew Eritrea was colonized 5 times. I recall my dad mentioning Turkish before & most recent Italians & Ethiopians. Not sure about the British. Also the Massawa buildings with Emperor Haile Selasie is awesome. I'm glad you found some internet spots & shared them too 😅. I haven't been back over 37 years for obvious reasons & this is my tour of #Eritrea. Ofcousrse the people are friendly, food is yummy, & city is historic. But to need permission to leave #Asmara everyday, I feel like is it an open prison?

Zann Parker thank you for visiting ERITREA ..The historical building of MASSAWA and the Tank grave yard..but one correction for the tour guide..The first colonisation was begun by Turkey from1557 to 1865..then Egypt ,Italy, British and Ethiopia.
