And then on the second landing attempt, one of the engines exploded, resulting in the deaths of everyone on board. Regardless, he was an absolute legend for joining the French army so he could train to become an aviator, and organized Czechoslovak Legions as resistance to liberate their homeland from Austria-Hungary which led to the founding of the Czechoslovak National Council. Heck, a minor planet was discovered in 1982 by the Kleť Observatory in what's now Czechia and they chose to name it after him, 3571 Milanštefánik.

And I love how Deutsches Reich brought their "Empire of Congo" to join the war effort, and said Empire of Congo did absolutely nothing...they just wanted the participation trophy. You know Milan Rastislav Štefánik is heavily respected in Slovakia when the Slovak government honors him by putting his face at the tail end of government airplanes, on top of Bratislava's airport being named after him. His personal motto was "Veriť, milovať, pracovat'" or "To Believe, To Love, To Work" and he lived that motto til the very end. As sad as it was, it was only fitting for his death to happen while doing his favorite thing, flying.
