When Zdeněk Zeman began his coaching career with Palermo in 1974, it quickly became clear that he was different to his colleagues. His ideas were radical, his methods unique, and his ideology like nothing that had been seen in Italian football before.
When he came to the fore as an innovator and nonconformist, Italian football was based primarily on strong defences. But Zeman thought differently. “A 0-0 is boring,” he said. “It’s better to lose 5-4; at least it gives you some entertainment.” This outlook earned him the nickname Il Boemo: The Bohemian.

Zemans Pescara team that won the Serie B in 2012, was incredible! Scored 30 goals more than nr.2, and had the likes of Immobile, Insigne and Verratti. If only he could have kept that lineup in the Serie A.....

I appreciated a lot! Once time I went t'Italy, may be on 1997 and I joined some friends of mine just to see Roma Verona. The final result was 4 3 and Vincent Candela scored two times in his first cap. I enjoyed a lot Roma's fluidity on the pitch; it seems the wings were unstoppable and Francesco Totti strongly ispirated. From that match on, I supported Roma and Zdenek Zeman even if I never went back t'Italy. Thanks, Mr Zeman, for that unforgettable match. Even my girlfriend accepted to marry me that night. 😄

As a video idea, what do you think of a reverse sensible transfers, where you choose a player and then discuss some clubs that could sign them. You could do well known players like 'Where should Pogba go', completely unrealistic things like 'Which club would best suit Messi if he left Barca', or things like you pick some random Argentinian and then say which of Europe's best clubs should take them!

I still recall the Lazio era in mid-90s where they play 4-3-3 with Signori, Casiraghi and Boksic as the three strikers, even though they didn't win anything, that squad was by far the most entertaining in Serie A and Signori was a mega superstar back in those days

Fantastic video. I think it would have been worth mentioning that he won Serie B with Pescara before returning to Roma. In that Pescara side he had a young ciro immobile and Marco Verrati. Both the earned big money moves. This guy also developed Totti into the player he became. Legendary coach. Winning titles isn't everything. Thanks for sharing.

He is basically like Mike D'Antoni (NBA coach). His offence is revolutionary but his teams are usually weak defensively. It would be a good idea to implement "defensive coaches" that could help managers who like to play offensive football. It is common in basketball... It feels like managers in football have huge egos though and they don't want anyone to help them.

Just a small correction, Zeman didn't flee Czechoslovakia in 1968 because of the "threat of Cold War". Cold War was raging since the end of World War II. He fled like many other Czechs because of the Soviet military invasion in 1968.

I first heard this name when around Roma's drama with De Rossi and the leaks about how the players wanted EDF out as manager, there was a reference to Zeman-like training practices, which was viewed negatively because the squad had so many injuries, but also it's kind of funny to me to hear that an older player is complaining that there's too much running involved :P. Poor EDF, I generally liked his ideas, but he has much to learn about the intricacies of the job.

I agree with the last comment in the video. A loser like him has given more to Italian football than a winner like Massimiliano Allegri has. Allegri was gifted top squads and could only win domestic titles playing in the old-fashioned Italian way. Zeman's cavalier style helped teams exceed expectations and he developed so many players like Salvatore Schillaci, Giuseppe Signori, Alessandro Nesta, Francesco Totti and Marco Verratti. IMO Zeman is the greatest coach to have never won a major trophy. As for this video, six minutes doesn't do justice and there some vital facts missing. You mention his 2016/17 stint with Pescara in Serie A but you don't mention his 2011/12 Serie B side. Some of the pronunciations were poor too.
@pablochiesa1420
@pablochiesa1420 5 жыл бұрын
Agree in general terms but you probably forget that Allegri led Sassuolo to Serie A promotion, did well in Cagliari and was the last manager to led Milan to win the title, a Milan that was long gone the super-power it once was. I am not a fan of Allegri, but in the last five years his European record is better than Guardiola.
@vitodoria7894
@vitodoria7894 5 жыл бұрын
@@pablochiesa1420 I haven't forgotten. I know better than anyone else. Allegri made that jump and at Cagliari, they played beautiful football, developed players, and the club punched above its weight. He was a disciple of Giovanni Galeone like Gian Piero Gasperini. While Gasperini has stuck to his principles, Allegri went the easy way out and became more conservative. If he balanced classical Italian pragmatism with the teachings of Galeone, I reckon he would have won a CL by now but his mentality is too cowardly. I still stand by my initial point. Zeman is a revolutionary. Allegri's tactics since leaving Cagliari is straight out of the Italian coaching manual. He is not Nereo Rocco or even Giovanni Trapattoni.

I remember his return to roma back in 12/13. He had tachtsidis play as a deep lying playmaker mostly because of his vision and passing. Zeman didn't care about his tedious nature and defensive limitations. After zeman left, tachtsidis followed him out the door. Just like zeman, tachtsidis has been a journey man himself because winning is seen as being more important than entertaining.

Some what of a similar career Mourinho has right. Except without the doping. A bit of a modern day trouble maker who whines about everything.

A non winning manager who, in my opinion, was just lucky in many situations. Bad coach
