A beautiful vocation discernment story from life of fr Brett Brannen. 14 )The “What Can I Live Without?” Meditation One exercise in particular was very helpful in my own discernment of a priestly vocation. Though I had all the signs that I was called to diocesan priesthood, my heart was very attracted to marriage and family. I was continually going back and forth between the two and found myself at a standstill. Finally, my spiritual director, a holy Trappist monk, suggested a very creative exercise. He told me to go before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for two consecutive days, each time for one continuous hour. The first day I was to have a “holy fantasy” about marriage and family life. The second day I was to have a “holy fantasy” about being a priest. On the first day, after asking for the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, I spent the hour thinking and imagining my life dating the holy Catholic woman I would marry. I then imagined the marriage preparation program with the local priest and the day of the wedding. I spent time thinking about the honeymoon and returning home to ordinary married life. I imagined my profession and working to support my family. I spent time thinking about the joys and sorrows of married life. During this holy fantasy, my six children were born and they began to grow up. We had our children baptized and we took them to Mass every Sunday. We prayed daily as a family and read the Bible. We taught our children about Jesus and I brought them with me to the church to make a visit, going for ice cream afterward. I attended and coached their ballgames and sat through their piano recitals. We went on vacation in the summer and visited our in-laws at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I imagined disciplining the children, dealing with the bad decisions that they made, and loving them through it all. My wife and I had a few fights through the years but we made up afterward. There were a few sicknesses, accidents and injuries, and there were some crises in the family. I tried to imagine the good and the bad, the joys and the sorrows. I spent time imagining my wife and I growing old together. I attended the weddings (and ordinations ) of my own children. That was especially interesting! The holy fantasy ended with my death, when I went before Jesus for my particular judgment. I died a happy death, surrounded by my wife and children and grandchildren, having received the sacraments of Confession, Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum. I went before the Lord and looked into his eyes earnestly and I asked, “Did I make the right decision? Was marriage my vocation?” The Lord did not answer as far as I could tell, but I was excited by the prayer. This was a powerful meditation and when I finished it, I thought “Marriage is the vocation for me.” The next day, I returned to the church to do the same exercise for priesthood. I asked the Holy Spirit to help me make this prayer well and I began a “holy fantasy” about being a priest. I imagined the application process and acceptance by the bishop (though I did not know much about it at the time). I tried to imagine what seminary was like, though it was difficult since I had never visited one. I imagined my ordination day and my first Mass. I looked intently at the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ in my hands, present because I had just said the words of consecration. “Jesus is God and he has come down here, for my sake and the sake of these people, because I am a priest.” I began to hear Confessions and I preached mighty sermons. There were lots of conversions, too. (It was a fantasy, after all, so I made it a good one!) I imagined life in a rectory and working with other priests. I did baptisms and funerals. I celebrated Holy Mass at Christmas and Easter. I visited school children and had a great time teaching them about Christ and the Church. In my fantasy, they really listened and took to heart everything I said. I prayed a holy hour in the Church every day as a priest and became (in my imagination) more and more holy. I visited the sick and the suffering. I counseled those with heavy crosses and marriage problems. I began to preach retreats and to encourage young men to be priests, since I was so happy as a priest. I tried to be realistic, so I also imagined some lonely nights in the rectory when I greatly desired a wife and companion. People became angry with me for preaching about some of the tough moral teachings of the Church. I was transferred by my bishop several times and liked some assignments more than others. I celebrated ten years as a priest and then twenty-five. I had a few illnesses and had to carry those crosses. I tried to imagine what I looked like as a priest at the age of fifty and again at age seventy-five. I imagined what the people of God thought of me. The holy fantasy ended with my death and I went before Jesus for my Particular Judgment. I died a happy death after being a faithful priest for over fifty years. I had baptized hundreds of babies and celebrated thousands of Masses. I had heard so many Confession that I could not count them all. I was very peaceful on my deathbed, surrounded by my family, my brothers and sisters and my many nieces and nephews. They were all kneeling around the bed, praying the rosary. I had received all the sacraments and I had no regrets. I had spent my life working for God in a wonderful way. I was a priest of Jesus Christ and my treasure was in heaven! My parish was holding a vigil for me in the church. They had around-the-clock adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, praying for their pastor as I was dying. After I died, I went before the Lord and looked into his eyes earnestly and asked, “Did I make the right decision? Was priesthood my vocation?” Once again, the answer was not clear. If it was yes, it was not a resounding yes, but it was more than I had gotten after the marriage meditation. At the end of the second day, I thought “This is not really helping me. It’s just making me want both marriage and priesthood even more.” Then I remembered the advice of the holy Trappist, who told me, “See which one you can live without.” I began to reason that if I became a priest, I would never have my own wife and my own children. I would never have all of those wonderful moments that God gives a person in the married vocation. I would miss that very much. I greatly desired those experiences. Then I began to reason that if I got married and had a family, I would never be a priest. I would never celebrate Mass and feed people with the Eucharist. I would never hear a Confession and wash away sins with the words of absolution. People would never call me “Father.” With that thought, I felt a sword go through my soul. It was a great moment of grace. It was the day I realized that I could live without marriage and family, but I could not live without priesthood. It was a tragic exclusion, but it was the moment of truth.
