The brand new Platinum 33 is greased to the nines. The tactical black 33 is well broken in. You’d have to test two brand new reels side by side.

The smaller gear ratio makes it easier to real. Also the reason why it takes more rotations to bring in the same amount of line

If you palm the reel just like a baitcaster you wont have that problem. You are holding the rod to far down.

Zebco 33 casting reel I have only have used a spinning rod combo and a bait caster combo that reel looks nice 👍🏼

Lower retrieve speed is easier to reel in. It is all in the gearing. I have 2 reels that are identical except for the the gear ratios. The slower reel has more torque and less top end and the faster has less torque and more top end. Think of it like a car with a 4.10 rear end vs a car with a 3.55 rear end.

It didn't have that resistance feeling when using the Delta which is a dramatically lower gear speed. In the 33 it felt like the spool was free spinning when reeling in but on the Platinum it felt like there was some drag on the spool. Really not sure!

@@mvboutdoors The 33 and 33 Platinum have different ratios. The Platinum is a faster reel than the 33. If you can, try the Zebco Bullet. It has a high gear ration, for a spin caster, and it should feel like there is more resistance than the 33. Another factor is that Zebco is hit or miss when greasing their reels now. The QA at their plant in China has dropped quite a bit over the years.

Maybe I have a unicorn, but mine runs as good as a baitcaster. I use my platinum to skip docks and very low overhangs. Everything else in my boat is a 7.1:1 or 5.3:1 casting reel. The only thing I can think of is you're use to the torque of the slider reel. I use my 5.3 for cranks and slow rolling deep for the same reason.

"The slower reel has more torque and less top end and the faster has less torque and more top end." That makes sense, something to think about when considering retrieve gear ratios.

Correct. It's like a bike. The smaller gear up front makes it easier to pedal but you go slower.

The old spincast rods were "offset". The handle dipped to allow the reel to set 1" or so lower. Much easier for thumb reach and flip over in the hand.

Yeah I think the old casting rods didn't have the blank through the handle.....that forces you to set the reel higher. This is the reason for the flat teardrop look of the newer bait casting reels.....the old ABU Garcia reels went out of favor because they sit so high now.

I changed out the bearings in my Platinum and put some ceramic bearings in it. It really makes it cast farther and just smoother overall. If you don't want it to feel so top heavy I palm my 33 like it's a baitcaster and that really helps and to me feels much better overall. The Platinums retreaval will smooth out the more you use as the standard bearings have a good amount of grease in them from the factory. Once that grease breaks down it will become super smooth.

That makes a lot of sense for what I experienced, thanks for the info. Very interesting on upgrading the bearings, I will look into that.

@@mvboutdoors The ceramic bearings are overkill but it was fun to do. If you do go ceramics down the rode I will tell you that it won't be nearly as quiet when casting and retriving as ceramic bearings for this application will be noisy.

How would the bearings assist in casting farther? Once the button is released there are no moving parts to allowing the line to go out. What am I missing here?

@@waygone6657 Something is spinning because when you cast I can easily hear the ceramic bearings. Ceramic bearings are not nearly as quite as the stock bearings that are packed in grease.

I noticed the same thing. As long as the lures are light and don't create much drag, your good. As soon as you put something on like a crankbait, spinnerbait or chatterbait, your screwed it gets hard to crank.

@@michaelcervantez3570 Could be, but I have other zebcos that are just as fast and handle all kinds of weights. This one makes no sense to me!

Well - I’m no expert, but it seems to me if you gear it to pull in more line - its gonna be harder. Less line would be easier. Thats typically how gear ratios work.

New rods are not designed for spincast. The rods with the offset handle are great

Could the Platinum be harder to turn because it's a newer reel? Would it "loosen up" over time? I am thinking about getting a Platinum because of the retrieve ratio and superior build quality. I'm not sure what to think about the topheaviness though.

It's definitely possible but other reels tend to be smooth right out of the box so I cant say for sure.

It is a little harder to reel with lures that create drag, but I still love the Platinum. I have 3.

I have 2 platinum. Have braided line. One works great but feels tough reeling in. Other won't cast but reels in fine. Not sure what to do.

Thanks for the note. I've been considering the Platinum simply for the braided option. Maybe I should just stich with my standard 33.

They recommend not using braid on spincast reels.

Tie the end of the line to something that won't move (like a car bumper ). Walk the distance it takes to pull all the line out of the reel while letting the line out . Reel it back in while putting a good amount of tension on the line . Hope that helps

Man this thing just broke today on me bruh june 21st 2023 i mean come on the extra money isnt worth it because my beother has a almost 10 year old zebco 33 and his is still working i just got mine a few months ago this is crazy

I really wasn't impressed with it, something felt wrong while I was using it. The regular zebco 33's I have are still working no problem.

You are using the wrong rod in this video. The rod that you are using is a spinning reel rod you need a spin cast rod for a Zebco 33. It will balance the rod out in your hand. I've been fishing for 55 years and trust me this will make the difference.
