The Zebra Pleco (Hypancistrus zebra) is a striking and highly sought-after species of freshwater catfish native to the Xingu River in Brazil. This small, nocturnal fish is renowned for its distinctive black and white striped pattern, resembling the markings of a zebra, hence its name. The Zebra Pleco typically grows to about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) in length, making it a suitable choice for smaller aquariums.
Zebra Plecos thrive in warm, well-oxygenated water with temperatures ranging from 79 to 86°F (26 to 30°C). They prefer a habitat with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, rocks, and driftwood, to mimic their natural riverbed environment. These fish are generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive species.
In terms of diet, Zebra Plecos are omnivorous but lean towards a more carnivorous diet, preferring protein-rich foods such as shrimp, bloodworms, and specially formulated sinking pellets. Breeding Zebra Plecos can be challenging due to their specific environmental requirements, but with the right conditions, it is possible to encourage spawning in captivity.

They come in various sizes and colors, with some species growing up to 24 inches (60 cm) in length. Plecos are generally nocturnal and require ample hiding spots in their habitat. They are popular in the aquarium trade for their algae-eating habits, helping to keep tanks clean. Some well-known species include the Common Pleco, Bristlenose Pleco, and Zebra Pleco.
