Manu threatens to file a complaint with the monarch, alleging that the British officers have violated the women's right to modesty, if they make them remove their veils. The women don't need to be checked in order to continue. Motibai, in the meantime, makes every effort to convince Gangadhar that the girl taking part in the prayers is not Manu. But it is Manu who appears as the bride raises her veil following the prayers. Motibai slinks off in disgust. Manu is told by Gangadhar that although he has apprehended the bandit who had attacked her, he cannot punish him. Manu responds that it would be right to forgive Samar Singh because he has shown repentance. Gangadhar is pleased with Manus' response and values her knowledge
