Yeah I’m in the same boat, I started getting into collecting hockey cards right before 2020 and didn’t know “hobby” boxes were a thing until I started watching this channel in the middle of 2020. I only got boxes at my local Walmart occasionally. I stopped after I seen how high prices are for hobby, it’s a fucking joke. I bought two fat packs on a big sale a year ago and that was it.

@@odeszaa..I just look for singles, Eg. Hall of Famer rookies(no matter the sport), or guys who’ll be in the Hall that are still playing. If you’re looking at slabs, look around 7’s to 10’s. There’s plenty out there for decent prices. Even base cards of Hall of Famers are worth it. With new cards you’re paying Extra for the card stock.

I loved the tins. I would buy as many as I could. But looks like UD took a meeting with Panini and made their product junk/worthless on top of boning their consumers on price. I won’t be buying a single tin or blaster from 2023, that’s for sure

Edit... I found a few 22-23 tins for $15ea. The store is Meijer so idk if it's smart, should I drop some coin? I think it's a no brainer based on what y'all are saying I will be buying a couple. Thanks

Yep, it was bad enough when I was paying $10 an autograph in some football draft pick blasters in 2016 and now I’m supposed to pay $20 US a Young Gun? Totally ridiculous. The only thing I will buy will be series 2 retail as sit on it for about 10 years for Bedard and the rest of the crop. I have no competition where I live for hockey retail. If the crop pans out then the unopened tins and blasters will increase in value and if he doesn’t then I’ll open it all up. I did this with 15-16 retail but it also was a lot cheaper.

@carolinatarheels7903 Best of luck in the hunt. Biggest hurdle for me to deadstock Series 2 is the entry price. $60 for a tin. I'm sure they'll go up, but it's not like getting 5 2015-16 blasters for $100

Don’t worry, the retail and the hobby will go down significantly if no one pans out from this series. Series 1 hobby from last year is already down to $65 US a box.

These are my fav format for years of all retail. I won’t touch them at 60. Hard pass

I pre ordered a case of series 2 tins. I was going to pre order a case of hobby for $2000. Eventually I couldn't find one available. When I did, they wanted over $3000 for the pre order. It wouldn't shock me if series 2 hobby will be around $300 a box.

@@dub1681 yeah i got lucky and managed to snag a case of hobby box for 173$ cad avg per box so around 2000 plus tax but my local card shop stopped taking pre orders (he barely took 5-6) and now is waiting to see what the trend is he told me. Wouldn’t be surprised to see 300$+ a box for sure

I only collect for base not these naff other cards like Mackinnon photoshopped to look like napoleon 8:40

Years ago I used to have a Target store where the vendor never opened the full 24 pack retail boxes, I would take them up to the self checkouts with a $20 blaster and scan the blaster for every full retail box I bought. They finally caught on when the packs sold weren’t matching their quantity.

For certain years, yes. Especially when the tins were $25 and in some cases $15 on clearance. I bought a ton of 15-16 series 1 and 2 blasters and tins when they came out and they have gone up in value substantially because of McDavid. Even 19-20 you could buy entire tin and blaster cases for less than $200 on close outs and those are going up because of the Hughes boys and Makar. The problem is this years tins will not, they are already too high for and SRP and the Young Guns are all carryovers with limited potential. Series 2 might be worth sitting on for 10 years if Upper Deck doesn’t raise the SRP because of Bedard.

Wait a year, both formats will go down significantly. You can buy last year series one hobby boxes for $65 US.

spend $90 a tin or $150 a hobby box in hopes of MAYBE hitting a $65 card (hughes) lol (excluding the rare hits that you're highly unlikely to see). something aint right with those numbers.

That’s what collectors of baseball, football and basketball have been seeing ever since 2020. Buying $300 hobby boxes and maybe getting $50 at the most in value. Yet they keep buying everything up and will never learn.

Sure they will, they always do because there is no Bedard in this series and a carryover Young Gun crop. I’m still buying 21-22 all series for $10 a blaster at Target and the vendor keeps bringing more to the shelves.
