And then, "on the cusp" means "almost" or "right about to". If the vase is on the cusp of falling off the table, it's teetering on the edge, about to fall off. If you're on the cusp of discovering something new, you're almost there, getting really close to doing it.

I cheated in Pokemon silver so that I could steal all the pokemon that fake Oak offers you. This caused the two trainers that normally block your path (there's like two Rattata fighting each other I think) to remain in your path forever. It's because you're supposed to go there, see them battling, go back to the lab and find out that ??? stole the other Pokemon. But he doesn't because you already took it so the game never continues. I asked a bunch of people how to continue and no one knew what was going on until the nerdy programmer guy asked why the pokemon was missing and we realized what happened.

@@0celot9 But you miss the ending, which is the whole point of progressing through the game. Remember, this game was made before KZfaq ever existed. In the 90s, you couldn't just look up the ending to a game on the internet. You would literally have to buy a legal copy and play the entire game over again. Even if the saved files worked, you would still have to buy a whole new game just to finish the final 10% of the game...That sucks like hell

I can't speak for physical games like this, but for digital releases this serves to waste pirates' time. It means they'll have to get through a significant portion of the game before realizing there's a check, or realizing a crack didn't work.

It's because those "pirate detected" messages are super easy to get noticed by hackers. They will pirate the game and play it for few minutes looking for such pirate checks. If they find one, they can just remove the message. On the other hand, subtle or late-game pirate checks are usually not noticed by the hacker.

You have to go through oodles of MIPS instruction-set assembly to find this one part of the final escape that is altered. However, with the right tools the programming for "checking the security chip" might be patchable

it only happens if you play on a pirated copy on a real console. if you play it on emulator though, everything should go fine also if the pirate copy has the correct cic chip, the anti-piracy features might not get enabled too

Piraters who do so in order to sell/share it with other people will usually check the beginning of the game to confirm it's functional before distributing it, but won't play all the way through the game. So they put it later on as a form of "frick u"
