PSA: There are two rings that are _unobtainable on Switch_ because Ages and Seasons had GBA functionality built into them (if you played on GBA, an exclusive shop would open in Lynna Village and Horon Village, where you can buy version-exclusive rings.) Because the Switch is only emulating the game being run on a Game Boy Color, the Advance Shop will _never open_ on Switch unless Nintendo makes an effort to patch it. Given that Ninty didn't ever bother to do so on 3DS, I'm not too confident this is going to happen. ON THE UPSIDE: The unobtainable rings are *purely decorational and only really fill out the ring list,* so you're not missing much. Furthermore, a password generator exists on the internet that can just give you all rings, anyway, if it's something that matters to you. EDIT: For reference, the GBA Time Ring (Ages) and GBA Nature Ring (Seasons) are the ones I'm talking about.

It's not unobtainable. There is a master code that can give you those 2 rings as well as all of them.

Oracle of Ages/Seasons were the first games I ever played in the Zelda franchise. It makes me happy to know that people will get to play these for the first time thanks to the switch. Fingers are crossed that these get the links awakening treatment someday because they deserve it!

I adore Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, they're my favorite Zelda games! Also, there's some cool stuff that you guys may not have known; There are 3 companions animals you can find, and which one you get is determined on where you find the flute. A portion of the map will change based on which animal you get, as they're required to help you traverse those areas. Transferring your save data between games allows for the true final boss to be faced, yes, but will also allow you to upgrade your weapons and find some items exclusive to the second game you play, including Bombchus and the Biggeron Sword! You get passwords to take back and forth between the games to get these secrets. There are also quest and side stories that you begin in one game that complete in the other, and depending on which game you play first will change what stories you see play out! All in all an amazing pair of games that are well worth playing through in both directions, great replay value to be found! I hope a bunch of people check it out and dive into the secrets because these games are jam packed with them :D

I had no idea. I was young and not a Zelda fan when I first played Oracle of Seasons. Was my first Zelda game. The initial thing that attracted me was the dual game red/blue pokemon-esque aesthetic. And I've always been a time travel fanatic. So I wanted to play Oracle of Ages. All they had was Oracle of Seasons so I begrudgingly got that. Then got stuck on what I perceived at the time was a confusing part of the map. Didn't know how to traverse farther and gave up. Cant even remember which animal I got. I feel like I remember riding a bear like creature.

@@InnerRise the bear is called Moosh! He's a big blue bear with tiny wings, and he can fly you over multiple holes in a row! The other two options are Ricky the boxing kangaroo, who can jump you up ledges(you ride in his pouch), and my personal favorite, Dimitri the baby dodongo! He swims faster than Link can, and up waterfalls, and can eat enemies.

These are the most underrated games in the series. Excellent puzzle and dungeon design and really satisfying extra items and weapons to discover. I hope everyone plays these some day!

Well there have been rumors of them possibly re releasing Windwaker and twilight princess for switch and I could see them remaking orcarnia and possibly majora mask for switch and charging full price.

@@shadowweaver1599 Windwaker and Twilight Princess would take little work (already on the Wii U and easy enough to port over), Ocarina and Majora’s Mask would take more, even if they use the 3DS versions. Plus WW and TW aren’t on the console at all, OoT and MM are through Nintendo Switch Online.

I missed out on both of these Zelda games when they released on GBC back then since my friends and family were really into playing Pokémon including me. Almost 2 decades later, I downloaded both Zelda games from the 3DS eShop and here we are now with the GB/GBC Online Service on Switch getting it's spotlight once more which makes me happy.

Minish Cap is on the GBA app and it's amazing. Probably one of my fvaorite Zelda games so far. Looking forward to playing these since I never got the chance to back in the day

Agree, never finished it but I remember the hat character well. Definitely a Navi style companion but I loved that game. It had a ton of the Nintendo magic to it.

Bought these day 1 on the GBC, even got the special content for paying them on my GBA. I was never able to beat them, though, as a kid. I just recently got them a couple years ago on my N3DS and finally decided to play them through last year. I beat both games for the first time around March and they were phenomenal! I am tempted to use my new game plus code that I got for beating both to start a new game on Switch.

Glad you noted in your history section that it was meant to be a trilogy of games. Remember reading one reason they gave up on it was due to the complexity of trying to link things over 3 games due to the variations if you went abc vs acb vs bca ... etc

This almost makes me want to cry lol. My brothers and I had to be sent to live with an elderly aunt for a summer and my mom bought us both games before we left. We didn’t hate being there, per se. but it wasn’t ideal. My aunt was kind enough but super religious. She made us volunteer at the church and stay there all hours of the day and night. We still missed our parents though who were in the down state trying to get our house situation settled. But my brothers and I played the hell out of these games and they helped us get through that summer and bond. One of my brothers is no longer with us now and there is no way I can play these without thinking of him, so when I play these games again I’ll be playing for him too.

If only they were actually on Switch instead of being on the online service. I don't see how it would negatively impact Nintendo at all to have virtual console as well as NSO. Anyway, they're both great games that everyone should try.

Minish cap was a launch game for the gba app. Many people didn't play these because they actually launched after the release of the gba, both games actually have a special shop that only opens if you play them on a gba/gameboy player, ill be curious if those shops are open in these versions.

The password system can also let you continue your adventure so if you defeated Veran some characters in Oracle of Seasons will mention that. I think there's also cases where characters from the other game will show up. Queen Ambi can show up in Oracle of Seasons (isn't she messing up time just by being there?).

This isn’t a GBA switch comment but I would do a lot for them to just put mischief makers on the N64 on switch. Seriously one of the most underrated games on the system in my opinion. I still have my original copy but I just want to play it hand held.

i’m pretty sure that capcom’s impressive “willow” for the nes had some influence on nintendo’s decision to approach them for a contribution to the zelda franchise as well.

I never played these games before. I really have to hand it to Capcom (via their Flagship label) for understanding how to make Legend of Zelda games while also adding new material that doesn't feel out of place with the franchise. I am currently playing Oracle of Seasons on Switch first and moving on to Ages. These games may look like Link's Awakening (DX) on the surface, but I could tell that a lot of time and effort went into these games in terms of pushing the limits of the graphics and audio for the Game Boy Color

Update: I completed both games back in August to get the true ending and unlock the "Hero's Secret," and it was a very rewarding experience at over 30 hours each. Now, I can start with Ages and continue with a linked version of Seasons to do the side quests that I couldn't access before.

I never played the handheld Zelda games due to never owning a Nintendo handheld, so it's great that they are slowly making their way to the Switch! I loved the Link's Awakening remake, started playing Minish Cap when it was released on the NSO service (but that's currently on hold until I finish TotK), so I'm really happy the Oracle games have finally been released as well. Now we only need the DS games (although I'm not holding my breath, those would be hard to port) as well as Windwaker and Twilight Princess (not holding my breath for those either). It would be so cool to be able to play all the Zelda games on a single console! But yeah, not holding my breath. Maybe next gen...

I experienced an emulation problem and I wondered if anyone else had the same issue- when I played Oracle of Ages this past week, there were some issues with the screen randomly palette swapping with odd colors, pressing start reset the normal color scheme, but that happened quite a few times up until probably the time I got to the 4th dungeon. In some cases when a dungeon was completed and the female maku tree was relating critical information, the sound of scrolling text could be heard but the screen was completely black. This was restored by probably the 6th or 7th dungeon. Thankfully, I've played the game before so I didn't miss anything I didn't know.

so im trying to figure out but im sure u cant do the snake link thing in vasu's shop where u link cable from seasons to ages and vice versa to get a free ring. since it requires link cable u cant do that? also whats the deal with starting the game up as a linked game? im sure thats a GB only thing as well and cannot be done on the switch?

These are the two entries I've never finished and always told myself I'd eventually get back to. Definitely a treat to not have to kill my rapidly aging eyes on the ol' GBC for it! BTW really cool with the little trivia at the end of the video!

Oracle of Ages is imo one of the best Zelda’s ever created. Of course that’s my opinion but as a combined package you really don’t want to miss out on these. Many happy memories playing these in Jr High.

And I just went to the effort a few years ago to reacquire clean copies of both games, Game Boy player for my GC, component cable for the GC, and then the Link's Awakening remake comes out and I though for sure the Oracle games would get the same treatment. Now they're on Switch and I guess no new Oracle remakes?

The Minish Cap is part of the Game boy advance collection on the Switch I beat it last month. I never had it when I had a GBA, I enjoyed very much because it played like Link to the Past. Now I'm playing these two I started with seasons, it feels like a step down though compared to how Minish Cap looked and sound. However, I too played link's awaking on the original game boy and theses games do feel like direct sequels to it.

It's great to see these on the switch. I have always felt that the 2D Zelda games were and still are as good as the 3D games. There is just a charm about them. I remember playing Links Awakening as a child, so much that I memorised all the dungeons and could complete the game in a few hours. Now, if only Nintendo would release some of the early 2D Pokemon games on the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance...

Loved these on gamboy color so glad they finally released them and now it sounds like I can finally play the third adventure I only played the first two because I didn't have a way to play the third. I mean they did it for the ds and remastered so its definitely not out of the question

i remember hitting Oxford st upon release & Shigeru Miyamoto was doing signings at Virgin megastore, i purchased both at HMV headed to Virgin but the queue was so long i had to give up getting them signed by him 😭 still own both in immaculate condition like New

I remember playing Oracle of Ages but never completed it as was more challenging than Awakening. There's annoying part where witch chase into you and becomes made rush to collect your stash. I missed the top down Legend of Zelda games. I hope Minish cap is added to library as well. In old days, to get true ending you had to connect both games together fight real boss. I never got that far as only had Oracle of Ages. Reminds me I have Link to between Worlds to complete.

I thought Minish Cap was on Nintendo Switch Online already, but maybe my brain just made that up?😂 After finally playing through two Zelda games (BOTW & TotK) after only ever playing them for a bit as a kid (always got stuck and gave up lol), I'm really happy that I now have a chance to give the early games another try! And I've heard great things about these two games, so maybe I could just start with them...🤔

I’m gonna be honest with you I bought these virtual console games on my 3DS and I never regretted it because it doesn’t matter which order you play it, Spoiler alert if you start in seasons, and go to ages, I feel that’s technically in Cannon if you follow the manga or if you go in the opposite direction and choose to go ages to seasons, it’s just as good you get to see the perspective from both sides, both secret endings, and the bonuses you get to see the subplots play differently after all in ages, the queen,seeks her lost lover if you play ooA to ooS then you can see some sort of closure to the flightline or you can go in the opposite direction and see different stories play out, although I never figured out how to get the respective animal companion for each play through since you have three animal companions, to choose from a flying panda , a kangaroo, a dodongo, although it’s really weird there are a lot of unique possibilities with this game, but I can also be very hard with some of the mini games,

Love these games..not as much as LA, but they're still great. Also, minish cap Is on the gba app I'm fairly certain.

So my actual thoughts on the game. Very solid titles. I have a problem with the exclusive mechanics feeling kind of gimmicky. Like in Seasons you get a season to use, but you just use it once and put the rod away for a while. It's not until the path to lvl 6 that you utilize all the seasons for problem solving. Not imperative but more wasted opportunity. But exploring the overworld, finding upgrades, and going through the dungeons are all fun.

It's interesting how 8 bit games like Zelda of Ninja Gaiden pull off massive wide shots of the hero coming up on a huge castle, camera behind them as it comes into view....then modern games where they could actually render it just don't even try!

LoZ oracle of season is one of my favorite zelda games. I had been waiting since the GB & GBA were released on switch! Now, nintendo, just give me Kirby and the amazing mirror, and I'll be set.

Oddly enough, Oracle of Seasons is rhe only Zelda game I've ever put any time into...approx 4 hrs. I actually would play one of these for a bit. Perhaps that will entice me to finally start BOTW.

Wonder if these ports have the Game boy advance features. If you played the physical cartridges in an actual Game boy advance back in the day you would unlock a few secrets
