ZEN AND THE ART OF REMOVING TEAK DECKS

Wilderness of Waves

Күн бұрын

My boat is leaking like mad and I had an electrical fire on the way to Tahiti so I am removing my teak decks! I made this decision after calling the boat designer Bob Perry. His apprentice, Gary Grant, designed my particular boat. The conversation went like this:
Ring. Ring. Ring.
Mr. Perry, “Hello,” in a sleepy voice.
Me, “Hello, My name is Olivia Wyatt. I own a 34 ft. Ta Shing Panda and I need some advice.”
Mr. Perry, “I didn’t design that boat, people often abuse my name to sell boats. You have woken me up from nap for this?”
Me, “I’m sorry I thought you and Gary Grant worked on it together.”
Him, “No.”
Me, “But wasn’t he your apprentice?”
Him, “Yes, but I haven’t seen him since the 70s. What‘s your question?”
Me, “The boat leaks everywhere. I have recaulked everything, but nothing works. I can see that the balsa core is so wet that it has turned to mud. Some people say just glass over the wood. Others say remove the teak and bad balsa then glass. What do I do?”
Him, “You should have bought a Bob Perry boat, then you wouldn’t be having this problem. I have never heard of this issue with my boats.”
Me, “I understand sir, my next boat will be a boat designed by you.
Him, “You have to get rid of the teak, you will be better off without it. You can not glass over it. Remove it, then glass and put a non-skid on top. This is all assuming that your hull to deck joint is fine, but don’t worry about that yet.”
Me, “But what about the wet balsa?”
Him, “Just leave it.”
I thank him for his time and we hang up.
After the call I feel like teak decks on boats like mine are just smoke and mirrors. They give one the illusion of a classical stout boat, but they are weak. They leak water through every screw hole and compromise structural integrity over time.

Thanks for clarifying to me why you chose to rip up the teak. Oh - and BTW - I agree with you about glitter on the deck! XO

As a Shipwright for 50 year's, i can say, you were lucky to find someone that knew what He was doing was doing, everything bedded, ect., very surprised you were able to do that work at the dock, especially all that grinding without a vacuum attached ,curious to what it cost you for labor and material's, you did the right thing to remove the worn-out Teak, as it will leak AND the White will be much cooler. Fair Wind's and you can't be too careful, never second guess, if in doubt move out.

bon jour Olivia!…you wasted no time in pulling up decks…i hope your ship survived the attack by the french armada…damn! not exactly the way i would have liked to see this go down…but hope cap rail and such are still holding up…i get why mr perry placed the chain plates inboard , but that through deck design can be a problem…i hope you eventually are able to lay a proper non skid deck surface …she’s too fine a yacht , and deserves the right application…regardless, you’re amazing! you’ve captured my heart and soul… je t’aime encore Olivia!

Well Olivia, I don't see that your deck was in such bad condition, it's very nice to have a boat with a teak deck, perhaps eliminating the old black sika for a new one and sealing the leaks was all enough, but I see that it was left very good, as an old sailor I really like theteak deck. Where are you now Olivia?

Those hard nuts are a real pain. My wife lubricates my nuts, allows a few to sink in, takes the proper wrench and doesn't twist to hard, mainly massaging the nuts until they become loose. Great footage, love the color reflections. Certainly a lot of hard work, your crew was awesome. Hopefully the leaking was fixed.

Cork makes for a great sea deck that also insulates and is kind on the feet in all climates. The big problem with teak is if its been screwed down .. filling the holes and finding any leaks... Pitty the the poor devil with a balsa core deck.

To my experience, when you are precise fixing boat problems wether you are in perfect environment, you have the appropriate tools, and you have done the fix many times or you spend five time longer to fix the problems which at the end won't be better fixed than if you would be efficient and not precise.

I really enjoyed the video. I’m getting ready to tackle the same project on my Baba 30… trying to build up the nerve! I’m a bit surprised that Perry said to leave the core. And it looked like you didn’t remove all the screws first. Did they just rip off the teak and then remove the screws that didn’t pull out? After removing the teak did you lay down glass? If so what kind and how much? And how does the deck feel now, is it springy at all or solid?

Some ripped out with the deck destruction and some I had to remove. After the deck and screws were on we put a few layers of glass down and painted :)

Because it was screwed down lots of little holes we had to glass it over I could have glued it back on but it wasn’t worth it. The boat designer told me to get rid of it entirely so I did , plus it makes the boat heavier and hotter

There not called leaky teakeys for nothing. I did my tayana 37 in 2008 and put down treadmaster. Its still good today in the hot tropics.p.s perry did the tayana and the cap rail leaked like a sive. And i replaced that too. Took 28 tubes of sikaflex
