Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! In this episode of My Rental Reno, I'm making over our new bedroom and turning it into a calm, neutral and zen space. Plus I do a DIY limewash wall, which is the coolest new way to paint an accent wall IMO!

As a person aged 76 it interests me how things come back into style. Everything old becomes new again. The bed reminds me of the Danish teak hot style from my teens and twenties, and the wall treatment is ancient, used forever, and I helped my Mom do it in our home in the 1950s. I'm not knocking it, I like it. 😊

I'm 80 and I feel the same way, it's the style I loved when I was in my 20's and 30's called Danish Modern. Never had the money to do much of it but still mix with my vintage oak pieces.

Yep, as a person close to your age, I also remember and love the Danish furniture. Love it so much that when we got married 40 years ago, we bought HUD danish teak bookcases which were not in fashion at all. We’re downsizing but we’re keeping those bookcases. They’re timeless.

@@samanthab3292 The bedroom makeover did not feel like Alexandra to me. Not a pompom in sight. I don’t know if it represented Noah or not, because I don’t know him. If this bedroom is representative of his personal style then he’s very bland. I don’t know why beige is so dang popular with young people today. It’s like every shade of sand is praised to high heaven. But sand is just beige by another name. Brown brown brown. Everything was shades of brown. This style doesn’t feel authentic to very many people to me. It feels more like what people believe they should want if they were real adults. It’s boring. I would have preferred a bedroom covered in pompoms and pink froufrou textiles mixed with Noah’s favorite sports team or band or whatever the heck he’s into. (Certainly no one can tell what he likes from the makeover videos so far. His on camera approval is tepid.) This rooms feels like people afraid to share themselves. One of the biggest indicators that this style isn’t them is that neither of them dress in the same style. What you like to wear is good inspiration for home decor. This bedroom design did not feel personal to Alexandra. It’s nothing like her previous space. Hard to believe she’s moved in with her boyfriend and just become a completely different person. I also believe that whenever people start praising a space by saying it’s like a hotel or a spa, it’s a pretty good indicator that the space is impersonal. If it’s a personal space the compliments would be very different.

@@rtd1791 there are pompoms in the linen. Plus, check out her living room and balcony videos. It's as pink and sugary as you would expect from her. When you live with your partner, you have to compromise. Last but not least, totally disagree that people who like this style are "bland". This is calm and serene, so no wonder many people would want that effect in a bedroom. Saying someone is "afraid to share themselves" just because they like white and beige is so judgmental it's ridiculous. This comment says more about you than about them, for sure.

I love the room and congratulate you for taking previous criticisms to heart and incorporating Noah into the space in such a sweet way. The heart artwork is the perfect concept for a bedroom. I just thought the solid black was the only harsh element in the room. I immediately thought of ways to DIY the same piece in a more serene way...limewash, stitching, or using lines or text to soften up the solid.

Really good space, great colour story. You nailed the minimal aesthetic/feel. Though can I be critical and say that I think the heart picture is a miss. It's the wrong scale for the space, and confuses the symmetry of having items (lamp, mirror, stool) only in the far corner of the room.

After following your design I decided to calm down my sleeping area as well. It is not a simple task but little by little it will get done. Right now it is way too busy and color filled. It was originally designed to be my creative work space and now is my sleeping space. I live in a one bed room apartment and have to be very resourceful in the design aspect of the space. Thank you for the motivation, I think I will sleep better and will recuperate faster from the surgery scheduled. I consider design the first step in preparation for future health. Our environment is very important in mental and physical health. Also I love to absorb your gentle energy ...catch all your videos and have enjoyed you for a long time now. I think people who are much older than us with good income buy there - without input from social media. WE should be fascinated by the label and build a desire to afford this furniture. So no, I think nobody of us buy from there. And when then just one piece we fell in love with.

This is my personal opinion.....and I express it not to offend anyone but to express a different point of view! I love and appreciate good design as a designer myself however, I have never been obsessed with or under the influence of 'labels'! Unless a piece of furniture is so unique that it cannot be recreated I personally could never buy a piece for that much as my heart and head would tell me that I could find a piece similar for much much less and with the money I saved, I could give it to an animal rescue/shelter. This would allow me to still have a 'great look' in my home (and I am sure my friends and family would not think anything less of the impact of the finished room) and perhaps I may have saved or at least made a huge difference in one or more animals lives! It is all about truly and realistically quantifying a product. When I was young, I naturally understood that people can spend their money where they like, but realised that a Ferrari owner would not really be looked at in awe driving down the street of a village where there is not enough food and water to feed themselves or their animals and crops! This kind of wealth only means something to those who would look on the Ferrari as a means to express their wealth/success and that goes for the people the Ferrari owner surrounds themselves with! In other words it only ticks the box for those that have money and want for nothing! To the people of the village, they would consider themselves millionaires if they just had enough food and water to feed themselves and sustain their lives! I have never bought anything to boost how I think people will look at me or think of me or my status. I believe this is what you call a state of mind and I have always been like this from a very young age! When all wealth and beauty is gone you will only have the bones of who you are!

Really attractive and calming palette - and I was hoping you were going to incorporate the little wall-knob into the artwork, the proportions seemed so close that it would work! So seeing you do that might be my favourite part, ha. I'd wondered if a little disc of wood might even work - like those wall "hooks" you can get which are basically smooth, curved-off polished wooden circles... but I don't know if they come in the right size. Could just 3m-stick it to the end of the knob if so :).

Beautiful result and great co-creation with Noah. It really looks like something both of you will enjoy. I would DIY a little wooden cap for the pipe to really blend it in. I’d think you just need to drill the right sized hole into a short dowel and sand to soften the outer edges. Or you can easily find round wooden wall hooks, saw off the “stem” and glue the head on top of the pipe.

The wall sculpture over the bed is gorgeous. You could probably DIY something, a little wood plug, to cover that pipe sticking out of the wall so that it looks like a part of the sculpture....but good for you for stepping outside your comfort zone. I too just repainted my bedroom to a more adult color and I am trying to go with a mixture of cute and pretty and grown-up decor. As always, beautiful work. I want that Target lamp, arrrgh!!

Love that art piece above the bed and how you integrated the nub. In an old building, that thing in the wall is probably a gas pipe for a lamp, like before electricity was widely used. I had one just like that in my bathroom.

What a lovely, calming aesthetic. Yay for no pink and going with a neutral, minimal palette and design. It's hard though to pick up on the color of the accent wall. It doesn't really come through on video, but I'm sure it's nice. Also, when you want to mix things up, Ikea (I think) has a rust colored linen duvet that would be perfect.

Love this room. It's just such a relaxing, comfortable space and neither masculine or feminine. So well balanced. And that art piece is everything. Well done, Alexandra.

I love the warm amber tones of the wood, cushions and lamp. The bench looks great. I'm not keen on the painted wall at the head of the bed but love the art piece and painted pipe end that goes with it. I'm also not keen on the black heart artwork. The rest is gorgeous, especially the fluffy white cat :)
