Samaneri Jayasāra - Wisdom of the Masters

17 күн бұрын

Baizhang Huaihai (720-814 AD) was a Zen master during the Tang dynasty. A native of Fuzhou, he was a dharma heir of Mazu Daoyi. Baizhang's students included Huangbo, Linji and Puhua. He has been venerated as one of the greatest Chan teachers of the Tang era and even today he remains one of the most recognized Chan teachers of all time. His Zen teachings focused on practicing in the present, independent freedom, individual discovery, and not relying on doctrine, or intellectual comprehension.
These extracts have been read from the text: 'Zen Teaching of Instantaneous Awakening' - Teachings of the Zen Master Hui Hai. Rendered into English by John Blofeld
Music: Swami Madhuram - 'Sandhya', from the album "Coming Home" by Time for Peace. With thanks to Swami for his gift of beautiful music. Please find more of his music here:

This is undoubtedly the highest teaching- we find some version of it in various traditions- in Christianity we find it in many experiencers- from Dionysius the Areopagite to Lillian DeWaters to Meister Eckhart. In Advaita Vedanta we find it in Vivekananda and Shankara and Ashtavakra. I hope I realize it some day. It’s terrifying, because it means the personal self doesn’t really exist.
@Travishibachi87
@Travishibachi87 13 күн бұрын
Not really terrifying just a different perspective. The Self is just a construct so that the Universe/God/Creation can experience itself. Without forms consciousness would have no way of being expressed 💚🙏

You have the intention to realize it and that’s enough. Just keep at it, be very patient and kind to yourself, and it will come in time. The fear is your friend, look at it closely, and then let it come and go as it pleases.

It's not terrorizing.. your thoughts terrorize, the idea that thought is real. But the beautiful thing, is what you are "trading" in.. is your love of this and that.. in finiteness for a Love of ALL.. even that which you "see" as evil.

Fascinating how the term ‘mind’ carries such opposing meanings in teachings, yet you still intuitively understand what’s being transmitted. I remember how that would really confuse me as a newbie seeker.
@TheCdrey
@TheCdrey 13 күн бұрын
Could you be so kind to explain further?
@Always-There
@Always-There 12 күн бұрын
@@TheCdrey Yep sure. From my experience, most teachings associate mind with ego and samsara - our mind based existence created by thoughts, perceptions, memories & hopes. But some teachings refer to Mind in the sense of it being Conciousness. For example Huang Po , (who calls it ‘One Mind’) and Nisargadatta often uses Mind as the ‘universal Mind’ - God. The context in which the word is used is what’s important, rather than getting hung up on the word itself.

“The perception that there is nothing to perceive: that is … deliverance.” Just a wordless wow is all I’m left with. The pacing with which you recite the words of the saints, sages, maters, etc. is so perfect. It allows the essence behind the words to penetrate beyond thinking mind into the stillness of eternal mind/consciousness, true nature, the Self-whatever words you want to use to describe the essence of what we truly are-so this “sudden illumination” of which Baizhang Huaihai speaks can emerge spontaneously. Thank you 🙏.

I have been doing the guided meditations on the website for a year almost daily now. Best guided meditations on the internet. Would love to have a zen buddhist style meditation on the website too. Zen meditation seems to be the most coveted type of meditation, as I have yet found no good guided meditations of that style in english.

Someone on our street has killed a hedgehog whilst wearing ear-defenders and using a petrol strimmer to cut long grass. Has it happened? Do I perceive this? Should I be angry? Or does it not matter? Should we speak out against human stupidity, or do we ignore it and say everything is fine?

Compassion is really the natural response that will arise when you contemplate the sufferings of all sentient beings. Perhaps ignorance and lack of mindfulness contributed to this unfortunate accident - have compassion for the one who harms another, whether deliberately or unintentionally. Our main concern should be with ourselves - to know our own minds and intentions; honestly and with wisdom. We will see that we are not stainless either. The only healing balm is the cultivation of a compassionate heart for ourselves and others, and practice to awaken more and more.
