In this heart pounding episode, we look into seeing what shape my Zenith Transoceanic Model V600L is. Did I get a good deal, or did I buy a junk basket?

The power cord retrierver was like the old Electrolux vacuum cleaners. As a young'n I would pull the cord out of mama's vacuum cleaner just to watch it fly back inside.

I used to read, I always had a book in my hands, and considered myself a life long reader. Now don't get me wrong, I was a high school dropout, I married the love of my life when I was a junior in High School, just could not wait, you know that feeling, well most folk do. So I started my Senior year but my mind was just not on learning what the teachers were offering, it was 1969 and I had in my head that as the man of the house, it was my job to bring home an income so we could get on with our married life. So I dropped out, and we moved to a neighboring State where jobs were plenty, you see there was shortage of young men to do most everything because the military was grabbing those abled bodied young fellows and sending them to Nam, those who didn't want to go, went North to Canada. Long story short, I hated Canada, and my number came up for the draft. I had a brother-in-law who was in the Army earlier and he advised me to join up and pick anything but infantry, so I did that, joined for 3 years and took Commo for a job. Anyhow eventually I got out after 8 years (one in Nam) and after getting my GED in the Army, I became a cop, and a good one, got promoted to Chief, and a line of duty crash sent me to hospital and back to school to learn a new trade. I graduated with a degree as a Legal Assistant minoring in Computer Science. Now nobody wanted to hire a 55 year old legal assistant, or computer programmer for that matter and eventually I was declare disabled by the bureau. I stopped reading when computers became the new learning tool and still try to learn a new thing daily, at 73 years old, I am still sharp as a tack, I hope to take after mom and live into my 90's but a bit of cancer has put that thought on hold. I revisit the surgeon who removed my right kidney in a week or so to see if he got it all. Wish me luck.

Good to isolate resistors before testing

If you can, yes, but if testing in circuit gives a higher, out of tolerance than marked measurement, it's quicker to just test first. Tube equipment is nice, because the elements in a tube won't conduct unless powered and biased, so there's usually not as many conductive paths in parallel with resistors in a tube unit. If something reads low, then isolating a lead is a good idea to check for the resistor drifting low, but carbon comp's almost always drift high.

Zenith model L600 from 1954. Nice that BAMA has a copy of the SAMs Photofact online for it. Too bad you aren't going for a filter capacitor replacement kit ( Filt-R-Pak). Whole thing is on a PC board and makes things easier all for $40. Seller is tomj8 on fleebay. I see no problem doing a restoration on it just needs TLC.

I always considered these things ugly. They did work quite well, an now with so many stations gone an lots of room to operate they should work well.

I find transoceanic radios 📻 interesting 🧐, but I’ve never 👎 owned one ☝️. I should check out yard sales and stuff. They’re a deluxe version of an AM/FM radio 📻. Out of tolerance capacitors and IF cans need some attention. Your friend, Jeff.

Hello Sam, Do you repair radios for people who would send them in? I just picked up a Grundig s450dlx and it has no power with dc pack or batteries.

That's a gamble you have to take, the trick is to not pay a lot for it and if it doesn't work out your feelings aren't hurt to much and you will have a parts unit to aid in the next one.
