If you're looking for a camera and lens combination that really works, check out this video!
If you're looking for a lens that best suits your camera, check out this video!
In this video I present five camera and lens combinations that I've found to work very successfully - so successfully, in fact, that they could have been made for each other. They're not the only lenses that work well with these cameras, but of the hundreds of camera and lens combinations I've shot over the past few years, these are some of the nicest.
We've got Nikon kit, Canon kit, Zorki, Sony and Fuji too, so check out the video for the combos I've found to really work!

There's something very special about these minimalistic photography club gathering with you as a chairman on this channel. I quite love it! So sad I can't call myself your patron any more because of payment restrictions( I can't even buy anything you talk about from eBay as I did back in the days, but keep watching you over and over)

My favourite combo is an Olympus OM-2n with a 55mm 1.2 lens, fantastic for shooting live jazz, one of my favourite subjects. For a slower daytime set-up, the OM-1 and the standard 50mm 1.8 is also great. I do like having aperture priority, though, you never know when you need to take a quick shot!

Christian, how does your 55 1.2 compare to the OM 50 1.8 at f4 or 5.6?
@Christian_from_Copenhagen
@Christian_from_Copenhagen Жыл бұрын
@@mattstolzman I wouldn't know, I mainly use it between 1.2 and 2.8. I mostly use the 50mm 1.8 for daytime walks because it's lighter and smaller. The bokeh is pretty crazy on the 1.2, though, if you're into that sort of thing. Sometimes a little flaring, too, but it hasn't bothered me so far.

Thank you so much for mentioning the Canon T70 with the beautiful 50 mm 1.4! It's one of my long time favourites and was one of the first in my collection of around 400 cameras. A few more dream couples I can recommend are the -Olympus OM2 or OM30 with the lovely Zuiko 50 mm 1.8, -Pentax istDL2 (a pretty old but gold DSLR) with the SMC Pentax-A 50 mm 2.0 (a truly magical combination), -Sony NEX-5/NEX-3 with the Pentax Auto110 24 mm 2.8 (the smallest quality lens you might have ever seen - and because it's that small, it creates a bit of a really nice vignetting effect, because it can't cover the sensor completely) -Pentacon Six with the Biometar 80 mm 2.8 Lots of greetings from Germany!

9:00 I remember trying out the Nikon FM and FE in the big Jessops in Leicester around 1982. Honestly anong the SLRs they felt unequalled as camera bodies. Though I do love the old Olympuses with their jewel like compactness. I have OM1N and OM2 plus the Zuiko 85mm f/2. "Never sell" type items. That lens even fits in the normal camera case like a standard lens. Wow that lovely 85mm f/2 Nikon lens is much cheaper than the Olympus!

one thing i'm not keen about re the nikon fm is the light meter readout. as i recall, it consists of three different illuminatable red dots stacked vertically. i prefer a needle as it gives me a better idea as to how far off i am from correct exposure.

Big, big fan of the Nikon FM. While the FE is arguably more convenient in aperture priority, the electronic shutter will eventually fail, but the mechanical FM will soldier on forever! Meter might give up someday but the image making machine lives on.

Nigel, another great topic to "focus" on. FYI I just acquired an Asahi SMC Takumar f/2.8 105mm. This lens is from 1962 and as you know Asahi became the Pentax company in the 1970's. The lens seems unused. Pristine. And, yes, some of the bokeh does become soap bubbles when stopped down to 2.8 but the sweet spot appears to be 5.6 which will be my setting for portraits. I am using it on my Fujifilm X-E2 (which I thankfully hunted down after you highly recommended it) and the combination is magic. I paid well over "our" budget for the lens ($80) but as I said if this isn't new my name isn't Elon Musk...hmm...cheers mate!

As an aperture priority shooter, I would vote for the FE or the FE2 instead of the FM. You can always shoot manual if you want to with those bodies. I had the Nikkor 80mm F2 and I now regret having sold it... a lovely portrait lens. No worries on the T70 rewinding the film all the way into the canister as you can always get a leader retreiver for cheap. It's just two thin pieces of metal that you insert into the film canister to pull the leader back out... very easy to use.

When I had my Nikon F4s, then later traded that with lenses for a Hasselblad, I was shooting for me. Later, after I had traded the Hasselblad for a 4x5, I started working for a small publisher. My working camera was a used, black body, Nikon FM with a bit of brassing on it. It was a great workhorse of a camera if you knew how to use it. If I get back into film that is the camera I will go for. Maybe an FE as I had one later and it was a really sweet camera. But, that old FM holds a special place in my heart.

For someone who wants to learn in 2024, I'd recommend any mirrorless digital camera and a 50mm field-of-view equivalent f/1.8 or more. Could be a vintage lens, but if this person is a beginner I'd probably stick to a lens with autofocus.

5:43 I think the word you were looking for was cast? Molding is more common in plastic. It feels overkill to cast a camera top plate to me, but then again, it was the 1930s and it was Leica. By the way, at least the black-finished Pentax Spotmatics and derivatives (Electro Spotmatic, ES and ES II) are made out of brass as well.

I bought an FM + 50mm f1.8 on eBay a month or two back for £105 including delivery, and it is in almost pristine condition, so good deals are out there and I've seen them go for cheaper. I agree about the quality feel (and the noisy shutter) but I wish the rewind crank base moulding was metal, not plastic. I accidentally chipped it when removing the circlip to get the top off (with no interchangeable focusing screen, it was the only way to clean out debris between the focusing screen and the prism).

The Canon T70 and FD 50mm F1.4 was my go to combo for Years, found at a thrift shop, until I picked up a 50mm F1.2. To be honest though, the 1.2 for 3 times the price, doesn't really add much, but also a very nice lense! My only problem with the T70 is the auto load mechanism. I have had it not catch many times, and it's hard to tell. So your best to add an additional leader to the film, so you can open it up after loading, to make sure it catching the teeth. Maybe this is just my camera though.. good stuff though!

The problem with a FUjifilm X camera is that they are a crop sensor. THere is nothing inherently bad or wrong with that; but I don't want my Pancolar acting like a 70mm lens. It was designed as a 50mm and that is what I want it to be. So I really only use full frame digital bodies for my vintage lenses. That way a 35 is a 35, and a 50 is a 50 ect. My Fuji XT1 is now attached pretty permanently to a Nikon Bellows unit and a Pre AI 50 1/4. With macro, the crop factor does not bother me. Love your videos. I'm a big fan.

I've had a Jupiter 8 50mm F2 on my Leica IIf for years. It focuses perfectly, as does my Voigtlander 35mm f2.5, Mind you, I tried an Industar 10 on it, and the focus knob would not lock mechanically at infinity, as it interfered with the camera body. Very odd.

Regarding the FED/Zorki cameras: the very first clones of Leica II were the FED cameras, assembled in Kharkiv, at the Dzerzhynski labour commune. Kharkiv is in Ukraine indeed, but in 1934 it was as Soviet as Krasnogorsk (in ruSSia), where FED clones started to be produced in 1946. Later, they evolved into the Zorki(s).

It is a lot of people's opinion that sellers of vintage lenses just hang them on a film camera so they can boost the price. To most of us, film cameras are just a useless piece of junk. It is the lens that it is all about. I told one seller, keep the body as I will just throw it in the garbage. Sell me the lens only. I can deal with the digital images in Photoshop. With film you don't know what you are going to get. My days of film processing were over in 1972.
