In the momentous year 1929 airship Graf Zeppelin began her round-the-world voyage from Lakehurst financed by amongst others Randolph Hearst. Nearby New York was still in the grip of the gay twenties. The flight of the Zeppelin attracted enormous attention and crowds. The first stop was in the German Friedrichshafen at the Bodensee. Next stop was Berlin. From the film ‘Farewell’ by Ditteke Mensink, research Gerard Nijssen; produced by Pieter van Huystee. A mistake has been made in one title: 'Europe in throws of WWII'. This should have read 'Europe in the throes of WW1'.

So grateful for your upload. I’m in my 30s and we never learnt about this in history and it certainly isn’t easy to find stories of these amazing aircrafts on here which is odd to me…. it flew round the world after all!!! So much respect♥️

Those are the power cars. The Mechanics rode in them right next to the engines , for four hour tours , tending the engines, taking their orders via a telegraph system similar to ship's engine rooms. No soundproofing , no insulation , engine heat only . Then a climb up an unprotected ladder in a 70 MPH wind , with the propellers spinning less than 20 feet from the ladder if the got swept off by the wind. .

@@lepaul26 The story goes that they were either Iroquois or Mohawk Indians. Apparently part of the rights of passage was demonstration that they were not afraid of heights. I got this bubbuh meisah from my late mother, who would have been two years old at the time this film was made. Whether or not it is true, I cannot say.

The hindenburg accident (which only 1/3 of the people die, not like on plane crash where 100% die) was the only fatalities that the company zeppelin had, their ships traveled millions of miles without problem over several years crossing the atlantic in those early ages with incredible technology limitations, using cotton for the gas cells, cow intestines, no weather forecast, etc.

@@FrancisMaxino in addiction in that time we have to remember that the nazis were using the zeppelin company and its airships as propaganda of their regime, this was a big hit to the nazi image (even if the company was not really related to them from the beginning), for last, USA had the only one big reservoir of helium, keeping the hydrogen fear alive they manage to sell a lot for any kind of lighter than air application, even weather balloons.

Thank you for the magnificent footage. I'm at awe... what an beautiful airship. My dad and mom saw the akron and Macon airship in akron, ohio. 1029 and 1931. Amazing history and era. Notice the men and women dressed up, wore hats. Classy generation, never will see it again. I really enjoy this footage. All I can say, thank you so much.

No ! No ! Not Lakehurst ¿ New York ? No such place. The United States Navy might get upset if you couldn't find Lakehurst, NEW JERSEY. My father was at Lakehurst when the Hindenburg went down. The family had newspaper press photographs of the Hindenburg explosion, but they have gotten lost over time. WOW ! Excellent post. I am 82 and have health issues, but if I can have a few healthy days I will video the Navel Air Station at Lakehurst from outside the fence. After all, the "Air Station" is a secure military base still active as far as I know... Thanks again. Super post ! Dirigibles (¿Zeppelins?) beautiful magnificent ships.

Was it the music or the sound effects or both? I love the theme music from 2001 a space odyssey but unfortunately it was put in the wrong place. The tacky footage of the globe at around the 4:10 mark should have been put some where else or eliminated and the Zeps launch should have coincided with 2001 completely theme. agreed? Great job

My mother saw the Graf go over Milwaukee when she was a kid. her sister and her went up to the attic to see it from the window and they were scared since it was so big.

This famous clip of the WW1 ruins in France was taken from a French airship in 1919. It should never have been included in this film.

O que me impressiona é que em 1929 já se preocuparam em colocar várias câmeras para filmar sob diversos ângulos o voo, inclusive a filmagem feita por outro veículo voador que fez a filmagem dele voando e os locais por onde ele passava, a filmagem feita do solo e conseguirem juntar tudo num só filme. Legal, ele voar baixo e de forma suave.

Superb photography for 1929 and great editing. However one scene is labelled "Europe in the throes of WW II but WWII did not start until ten years later (and WWI ended ten years earlier)

The graf zeppelin 2 was hindenburg's sister sbip,built in 1936 This is about first graf zeppelin.

@@Bare36 Yes. This first Graf Zeppelin had different proportions and looked more graceful. A little slimmer where the HIndenberg looked fatter.

Oh what a sight that must have been. Would love to have had a ticket on that one! The closest I've been was to fly in a thermal airship. A modern day version of the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg. NOT EVEN CLOSE to those that enjoyed magnificence of zeppelin flight. So envious.

There is a glimpse of a young, blond boy, probably around 12 years old in one of the early ground scenes. He's long gone, would be around 115 years old today. The images are indeed haunting.

Back when ANYTHING seemed possible ..... the cars at the first were so streamlined ...... airships around the world ...... skyscrapers ......it seemed the sky was not even the limit .....then the Hindenburg and September 1939 ...... dreaming just didnt seem to be the same ...... after WWII it was Abombs and Commies under every bed and continual wars in Asia .......wished we could dream again like these folks did 😄👍❤🇺🇸

I can't believe that this airship filled with Hydrogen never exploded in the 590 flights during it's lifespan. And it's eerie to imagine that people rode on this ship, and the ground crew moored this ship with probably a sense of near total safety.

Great flick. The Dymaxion car was not around in '29. So at least some of the footage is after '32. I can't imagine taking such a risk as flying around the world nearly a century ago. It could go days without refueling.

Aerial footage of Ypres and the Cloth Hall at 11:55 filmed by French airship pilot Jacques Trolley de Prévaux in 1919. Definately not filmed in 1929.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was questioning that statement! However, in 1929, Europe wouldn't have been in the throes of WW1 either. That war ended in 1918. It should read "Europe in the distant aftermath of WW1."

It is interesting that the two most luxury forms of air travel were also the slowest and the fastest (Zeppelin and Concord) and are also both things of the past.

Hele mooie video die goed laat zien hoe immens groot dit allemaal was in die tijd (en nu nog), de 1920-1930 er jaren. Het "na WO II" stukje valt er een beetje buiten, maar is toch informatief. Indrukwekkende filmopnamen en de geluiden zijn er ook erg goed bijgepast. 22 jan 2021.

Just saw this video, first time, then checked out your channel. *nice stuff. I subscribed.* People today forget some pretty amazing historical facts: *by the time the airplane even began becoming availed to folks, these brilliant machines were being perfected, and flying across the ocean by then.* The aircraft industry, in my humble opinion, helped to crush this great technology. For reasons obvious, if these were ubiquitous today [Lockheed Martin built a modern 'heavy lift airship' check it out on KZfaq] there wouldn't be a necessity for so many aircraft, runways, ect. Not sayin they would go out of business, I'm saying i believe they collaborated to help kill the last of a endangered species of machine, to their benefit.

Aha. Wondered why the clip identified as WWII was inserted, but if it were from WWI, 12 or so years earlier than this flight, that would make at least some sense but it would have still needed a bit of text or dialogue to explain why the clip of the war-torn ruins was even inserted. Great build or introduction footage of NYC and Europe from that era. Good work! Very nostalgic for those of us born or even living at the time of this flight.

Notice that they launched light, pushing the Graf into the sky, ("Schiff Hoch!" ( "Up Ship" ) , then started all the engines simultaneously at around 300 feet..
