Professional eaters who were also gamblers in 1960's Las Vegas were called "Trenchers." They would gamble over who could eat the most, and the quantities were mind boggling. I remember one guy would start off with a family sized ceasar salad, proceed to an entire platter of prawns, then an entire rack of lamb, huge quantities of roast potatoes, multiple deserts, and all washed down with 3 bottles of wine and 2 fifths of gin. And then he'd move on to the next town and do it again the next night !
