In this video, I make a zero clearance throat plate for my Ridgid Heavy Duty Job site table saw. The materials I used is a piece of old laminate flooring with a few washers and a trick using some window blind hardware. The results are amazing! Cutting rabbets for rabbet joints are now much safer and easier to do and the risk of smaller pieces getting sucked into the blade is all but eliminated.

The laminate flooring I used is very durable and can be cut with conventional saw blades for wood. When in doubt, check the cutting directions from the manufacturer. Alternately, you can use plywood or melamine to make the same zero clearance plate - it's your choice.

@Paul St.Onge Most of the tool brands don't seem to have one. It would be smart for them to include it as an optional accessory.

Very nice Eric. I liked the window shade cleat as the spring catch. And I have a Ridgid saw- so lots of good info.

my Ridgid saw came with the leveling screws in the table itself, so I don't have to add the screws to the plate. I think they improved it.

This is a great video. One thing I saw on another channel was to use a hot glue gun to build up tabs under the throat plate that allow it to be flush with the surface of the saw table. The video showed putting masking tape on the metal ledges that hold the throat plate and then squirting hot glue on them and pushing the plate down until it is flush. The glue will stick to the throat plate but not the tape on the ledges so you can then pull the plate out with these glue feet attached. I used 1/4” Masonite for my throat plate which is readily available and allows room for the glue to elevate it to level. Hope this helps someone else out there.

Great ingenuity! Tnanks for the plate idea. I would like to know how your Ridgid tabla saw works. I am in the process of buying a new table saw and this may be an option. Thanks.

Great video. One suggestion. Instead of using 4 washers to raise the throat plate why not use 4 small Neodymium magnets? When glued in position hey would hold the throat plate firmly in place.

found it! If you didn't have laminate floor can you think of any other material I might use? Thanks again.
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 6 жыл бұрын
If you can find the right thickness, you could try plywood or even aluminum plate, which you can still cut on a bandsaw. It's better if the material is a bit thinner, then you can just add washers to even out (as I did in the video).
@TheGkaz
@TheGkaz 6 жыл бұрын
Instead of looking around for shim material for the corners, use hot glue. Four dabs of hot glue in the corners, then press the plate down while the glue is still hot. Weigh it down with a flat object, which will level the plate with the saw table. After it cools you have a perfectly level insert.
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't that make it difficult to make the plate removable?
@TheGkaz
@TheGkaz 6 жыл бұрын
Don't put too much glue on the tabs. Like the grub screws, you only need a small point of stand off. A little plastic tape (like a glue up) or a dab of Vaseline works great as a release agent. You actually don't want the glue to stick to the saw table, only the wood insert.
@charlesxix
@charlesxix 6 жыл бұрын
@@EricSorensenCanada you could put a smear on grease on the tab so it doesn't stick to it.

Why do need a zero clearance plate?
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 6 жыл бұрын
To prevent tear-out / chip-out on a cut and to keep small off-cuts or strips of wood from getting sucked into the gap in the factory plate. Strips of wood can get caught in the gap and shoot out at the operator - not fun.

I've had a table saw for only a month, and not having a zero clearance is a huge pain in the butt. Constantly turning off and unplugging the saw so I can reach in and get cut-offs. Thanks for the video, will be trying to make one.

How do you like your Ridgid table saw? I'm thinking of buying one. Is the fence good?
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend it. The fence isn't great and the fit and finish isn't very good for the price. Do yourself a favor and buy a Dewalt instead. For myself, I'm probably going to sell my Ridgid in the New Year and buy the Dewalt 8-1/2 inch compact table saw.

@@EricSorensenCanada Thanks so much! I just discovered you and have been binge watching your archive. I love how you work with regular guy tools in a small shop just like me. I was eyeing the newest ridgid bc I was hoping to get a good saw for $350 instead of a $550 dewalt.
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks🙂 All I can say is that I've had mine for 10 years and it's not that great. It does have a lifetime warranty and I already replaced it once within the first 2 years (but they will only give another Ridgid - no money back) It depends on if you really need the stand or if you build your own table for it. The compact 8 1/4 inch Dewalt is $399 - no stand . If you wait for black Friday or boxing week, you might even get a much better deal. Also price compare with Lowes - they sometimes have better deals.

How did you get a soft start on your saw?! Mine i got within the past year violently kicks on at full speed!
@EricSorensenCanada
@EricSorensenCanada 5 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Your saw should take about 5 seconds to reach full speed. If it's a Ridgid, take it back to Home Depot. Either get your money back and buy a Dewalt or they'll give you a new one.

mine was advertised as having soft start, but it just kicks on..... it won't cut anything square.... the fence sits at an angle, and wood drops down if you dont figure out how to get your plate to sit flush..... i wish i wouldvbe just bought a used one or spent an extra hundo buying a dewalt

They do carry one for Craftsman and Delta but I didn't see any on there for Ridgid. You can buy one on Amazon for around $85 (where I am) but it's for the R4512 cast iron table saw. There may be other 3rd party manufacturers - haven't found any myself.
