FUNNY “Drop-In-The-Toilet” Story…. Years ago a teacher colleague of mine accidentally dropped her classroom keys into the toilet just as she was pushing the flush handle. SWOOSH… away they went!! The maintenance men did eventually retrieve the keys for her from the plumbing. That year at our staff Christmas party another amazing colleague gifted her a hand made key chain that was a floating life preserver for her keys. It was the best!! Great video today Gittemary. Love your energy!! Your bathroom is just as unique and charming as you!! 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary🧻🚰🛁🪒🚽🪥

TIP: High school sewing teacher and crafty gal here from 🇨🇦. I just thought I would mention that you can use a regular household iron to iron paper and remove wrinkles. I wouldn’t hesitate to iron the paper wrapping from Who Gives a Crap Toilet Paper and re-use it for crafting and gift wrapping. Just BE SURE TO TURN OFF THE STEAM (or empty the water) and use a low-medium heat setting. Occasionally some inks will smear (usually print from a printer) so I will always iron paper on the backside just to be safe. This l’il trick also works great for ironing tissue paper patterns for a sewing project. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary🧵

I love how you set up your period products. I was looking for more counter space I guess for the aesthetic aspect of it but I will definitely be sewing up some old shirts to hang around my bathroom since I have two teens that need more products than me. I use the menstrual cup but they’re new to their cycle and have loved the period underwear in combination with a couple disposable pads that they use on their first two days. They’re still learning how to properly wash their undies but they said once they master it they’ll be more comfortable with just the underwear and no pads.

Yay for the bathroom tour!! I love how real and down to earth you are. No Pinterest level anything, yet you still give me so much to aspire to! We have a mini "compost" basket in our bathroom that we put hair from our brushes, toilet paper rolls, compostable Q-Tips, etc. When it gets full, we empty it into our big compost bin. Over the last year or so of following and researching zero-waste, we have implemented using bamboo toothbrushes, deodorant in compostable tubes, shampoo/conditioner bars (we already used bath soap bars), a Tushy bidet, and eco-friendly toilet paper. The first more eco-friendly toilet paper we tried was Naturolly, I first heard about from KZfaqr Kristen on Strolling Through Life. We absolutely love it! Since, we have also tried Who Gives a Crap, but we were not nearly as impressed. The recycled paper toilet paper completely falls apart when wiping and leaves "bits" everywhere. I love everything about the company, all the way down to the wrapping, though! I may try their bamboo toilet paper next and see if we like that one any better. I would love to support their environmental efforts and business model! Thank you for sharing your bathroom video! I look forward to your next video!!

WAIT… where are the old-school retro wooden clothes pegs? I know they’re there somewhere… maybe they’re doing their clothes peg job somewhere in your kitchen or your basement? They are so multi-purpose… they could be anywhere. My partner is a musician and he uses them to hold sheet music on his music stand. I use them to hold little bags together in the kitchen drawer so they are all bunched together and not scattered. Maybe one day we (we? I think I mean you) could have a video on all the purposes for old-school wooden clothes pegs… that would be fun and interesting… d’ya think?

That depends on how you wash. We lived on a boat where fresh water was extremely limited. We saved all our dishes to be done at the end of the day. We used maybe a 1/4 cup of water in a bowl and a bit of liquid soap with nothing in it to harm us or the creatures under our keel. We used a cotton rag, that looked surprisingly like the crochet one. We wet the rag in the bowl and washed all the dishes with the soapy rag. After we stacked all the dishes on a drying rack and pumped out roughly 2 cups of fresh water and rinsed them. Capturing the run off for our plants (had herbs in little pots).

An off topic question I just thought of seeing your "freaky" bathroom. How do people with disabilities (like in a chair like me) deal with the odd architectural? I LOVE the picture in there.
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that wouldn't actually be possible in a building like this one, there are also several steps and stairs even to the first floor, and no ramp or lift. The city has build new disability-friendly apartments, and other apartments might be better for sure, but with older ones, user-friendliness is rarely incorporated into the initial design 😐

Toilet paper is for blowing your nose in the bathroom; not for wiping or drying your ass. After you use the bidet, you can use a small cotton hand towel to pat dry. In my guest bathroom, I keep a few hand towels available, along with a trash bin that's just for used bidet hand towels.

Yay! I've been hoping for a more in-depth video like this! This past month I've begun making some zero-waste swaps, and they're primarily with toiletry/personal care items, such as shampoo bars, tooth tabs, and I just got a facial bar. I've loved watching your personal care videos, but seeing the actual storage of it was something I've been very curious about, as I'm still trying to figure out what works for me, so I'm excited for this inspiration (particularly when it comes to shampoo bars...). Thank you for sharing! You've been a huge inspiration for me to become much more conscious as a consumer; though I have a few limitations in my current situation, I'm excited to make as many swaps as I'm able to, no matter how small. I'm curious, have you heard of Viori before? I got a shampoo bar and a condition bar of theirs as a Christmas gift, and would love to hear your thoughts, if you have heard of them. So far, I love it, and the company's mission is very ethical, at least as it is advertised...

I think it's to keep the paper from getting dusty. If they send you 48 rolls at a time, and you use half the amount of toilet paper than normal because of your bidet attachment, those rolls will be sitting for a while. No one wants to wipe their butt with dusty toilet paper.

There are brands out there who offer rolls without individual wrapping and just come tightly packed in a box. Who give a crap say it’s for hygiene purposes but I get my loo roll unwrapped in a box and just keep the box shut unless I’m getting a new one out, so it doesn’t get dusty or dirty, and haven’t had any problems. I think they do it for the aesthetics mostly, it certainly seems to have worked because the brand has become soooo popular! The fact they give away so much money to charity is great but if you can find a company who produces loo role in your own country and doesn’t use individual wrapping then I think that’s better, less carbon footprint. I’m in U.K. and who gives a crap has to be shipped from other side of the world! I use Tŷ môr and Boxroll

Same here! My husband has no objections to anything I do to be more eco-friendly, but doesn’t himself take any initiative to make any changes. But there are things you can do that can make an impact, and they aren’t things you need him to do too. It depends a lot on what your living situation is and how you divide the labor at home. I’m fortunate enough to be a stay at home mom, which gives me control over groceries and home upkeep- almost the entire source of our household’s waste. My husband actually really likes some of the initiatives I’ve incorporated because he can see that A) we save money and B) I’m happier and more fulfilled at home this way. Not everyone has that arrangement, but take inventory of what you have in your control vs. what is outside of your control and focus on integrating one thing at a time. Even if your husband was 100% on board with completely overhauling your lives to be the most sustainable possible, you still could only make changes one small step at a time. So start with what you can and see what sticks. I just stopped buying paper towels and plastic bags, and use more washcloths and reusable containers instead. I make one extra portion of every dinner and pack it for his lunch (minimizing the plastic waste/financial drain of fast food and keeping him healthier). I switched to reusable cotton period pads, which saves a whole lot of money and is actually more comfortable. I save our kitchen scraps for homemade broths, saving money and diverting waste from landfills. The biggest “contest” we had was when clothes shopping. Resale seemed “icky” to my husband because his family didn’t do that as far as he remembered, while my family was straight up poor and never bought anything new unless we had to. So I just went shopping without him one day and came back with an entire year’s wardrobe for our child for a 1/4 of what it would have cost new. I sat him down with the receipt and the bags and let him inspect everything. He was genuinely impressed and from there I had his complete support in thrifting all of our clothes. I don’t recommend making financial decisions without your spouse, but you and he may be surprised at what he’s willing to accept if you just start implementing what changes you can. Sorry for the absolute wall of text. You are not alone and you have support. Just take things one step at a time and go slow. Little changes that you can stick to are better than big changes you can’t keep up with. You got this!

We struggled financially for many years so for us it started gradually swapping to healthier alternatives that I would find for necessary items, we had nothing, even our clothing was very limited so I invested in a pack or terry cloths I think it was about $15 for about 100 and have been using the same cloths for almost two decades now (I feel old lol). We set some aside for cleaning up, some for the floor some for our hand towels in the bathroom and even had some as our tea towels that I had cut up and sewn up nicely to differentiate them. It’s been years since we’ve been making swaps and even though he comes a different background, I had nothing growing up and he had everything I have managed to teach him ways in which our purchases impact our environment. When I gave birth to our kids he refused to buy many baby items by telling me they would end up in the landfill 🤣 I trained him well lol . It definitely takes time to make changes and adjust.

I am curious, Gittemary, as to how you save toilet paper by using the bidet. Not to be too personal, but how do you dry yourself? I have created my own bidet with a small squeeze bottle (used for #1 only) and several washcloths, which I call drying cloths. I have enough for more than a week before washing them, using one a day. I love how much cleaner this improvised bidet makes me feel than toilet paper. But back to my question - most people who use bidets don't talk about the drying part. And if you use toilet paper to dry yourself (thus defeating the purpose of the bidet!), it literally falls apart. So...do you have drying cloths as well? I find my method very effective. :)

I would really love to hear you opinion on the effects crochet and knitting on the environment and whether or not you feel it’s more ethical or less ethical than fast fashion and the clothing industry. I love to crochet and knit and I feel guilty buying acrylic yarns but I can’t afford natural fibers as they are very expensive. I have started making most of my clothing rather than buying fast fashion. I often wonder if making my own clothing is actually making a difference due to the fact that I am still making them with plastic.

I love bidets !! I remember them from my ex bf's home in Italy, they're so common there, too. I should move to DK, love their flat layout, haha. Bidet in bathsrooms, showers in the kitchen, that is so not common in Germany where I grew up or in Scotland, where I have been living since 2016. I have been using the portable bidet bottle "Happy Po" (Po is German for butt) and I love it, just open the bottle, fill with water and screw back together. I am not using toilet paper at all, guests shall bring their own, hehe. Also I loooove your boobs/dick mugs, absolutely adorable :) and you have enough razor blades and toothbrushes for the next 5 years.

Why would it be better for the enviroment to buy toilet paper that is made in a another part of the world and shipped to you then to buy local. I live in Sweden I buy toilet paper that are made in Sweden from recycled paper, yes it has a plastic wrapping (from 60% recycled plastic) but isn’t it better to buy local then have to ship it all over the world. Who gives a crap don’t even say on there webside we’re in the world it is made. Some sources say china. I don’t know.

To be eco-friendly and zero waste by reusable family cloth or reusable washable toilet paper you’re still having to cut down a tree to make that toilet paper so it’s still not 100% eco-friendly or zero waste considering it’s still wrapped in paper
