In every journey we always make mistakes and that's PERFECTLY OK. Today I talk a little more about some of the zero waste essentials that I regret buying, but have found new homes for or other ways to find value in them. This video is merely meant to help give more information and another way of viewing consuming so hopefully it is in some way helpful on your zero waste or minimalist journey.

CONTEXT: I've been on my low waste journey for over 3 years and I bought most of these items at the very beginning when I didn't know better and should have either bought second hand, or looked at home first. This was a mistake. I have since become extremely conscious of anything I buy, especially new items. I think it was also a mistake to continue to use any of these items as 'props' so I shall be doing either a giveaway or simply giving these items to those who need them. Thanks for your feedback.

I'm wondering if you can explain to me why to use stainless steel containers? I can't find any articles comparing stainless steel vs glass containers. I use glass rather than plastic but am just curious :) (friendly question from a newbie low impact college student)

I honestly think it comes down to weight (if you’re carrying them around) or because glass has an additional material for the lid? To be honest there is a lot of information about both, but I think from a resource perspective glass is less impact but has less value. There is a lot of contradictory research about both - I’m currently looking into it more so hopefully I’ll have a more satisfactory answer for you soon!

SarahRose283 Once I accidentally broke a glass waterbottle and later a glass container on the way to my workplace. Now I only use glass home.

I keep seeing ads on social media for hoodies with slogans like 'there is no planet B' and other 'sustainable' messages, but really it's just more fast fashion marketing itself as sustainable because people are becoming more conscious. Makes me mad because I know many people will not know any better. Not just clothing either - so many unnecessary/wasteful things marketed as ethical! Would be interested to see you cover something like that :) xxx

I actually have one of those sweatshirts. It’s a great sweatshirt, but people read it and start to think about the message, just like when you wear a vegan shirt. However I do see your point as you’re buying it new rather than second hand.

I think the minimalists touched on something like this. Supposedly H&M was making shirts that said "minimalism" which no true minimalist would ever buy becauSe it contradicts values minimalism like not buying fast fashion or buying things you don't need in general. They just want to bank off of what's popular.

I looked at one of those ads to see if the material was a sustainable or biodegradable fiber and it was not. I was very disappointed.

I didn't use a reusable straws until I started to work in a call center. It actually is a really important staple for me because it allows me to sip water while on a call without having to worry about bumping my microphone. It just shows how critical it is to acknowledge what your personal needs are instead of just jumping on bandwagons.

YES. I have a disability that affects my spine and some days I cannot sit up in bed to sip water or take medicine. I have about 3 bendy straws that are dishwasher safe and they work wonders. I have a really wide one that is also great for soup & thick smoothies. My de-cluttering journey will look so much different to other people who don't have this issue. It's important for everyone to approach this topic - what you no longer need - with an individualized approach, or it loses meaning. For some of us, one of these things on the list could be a "must-have". I appreciate that this video is really honest and not preachy, though. It made me think of other things I don't need to buy in order to make my life simpler.

Same here, I get cold sores so easily and straws have always been a most so I switch to a reusable one. Only bought one though and love it !! And the best thing is, the less cold sores I get, the less medicines I need to use for that !

really interesting video. I think one of the biggest problems with 'low waste' is the misconception that you must get rid of all your plastic and buy zero waste items...surely you are just adding more things to landfill? The best way of being low waste or sustainable is just using what you already have and only then replacing them with low waste items once they are no longer usable. xx

Really agreed, especially since I’m a student who’s trying to save money. If I end up with a plastic bottle, I’ll use it till I accidentally destroy it by pouring hot tea in it. If I end up with plastic cutlery, imma wash it and reuse it until I lose it. Iz not the best way of reducing waste, it would be best to just avoid ending up with disposable (plastic) objects, but I’m not dedicated enough to go to “extreme” lengths. Aka remembering to tell people to not give me plastic cutlery or simply not buying sodas. But yeah at least reusing is better than not reusing.

Yes! I die everytime I see those pictures of perfect refrigerators with no plastic containers, thinking about how many I've got before acknowledging they weren't a good choice, and it makes no sense to throw them away right now just because they seem bad.

I love that you talk about only ever using straws as props and behind you on the table is a jar with a straw, just sitting there and effectively being a prob. :D

I bought straw for when I eat at a restaurant.. I found out that it is easier to say no to plastic straw when you show your own straw.. I have been asked in many occasions on how to drink cold drink without straw.. Or you can simply ask for hot drink.. In my place, they did not include straw in hot drink.

While the bamboo cutlery can be a bit redundant when we have drawers full of metal cutlery, they are useful for getting through airport and other types of security checks (or just about everywhere in France nowadays where there are constant bag checks). Thanks for the interesting video!

Yes, we are currently long term travelling and our bamboo cutlery has come in so useful. It can go through security, is light and useful when the hostels have nothing or you are eating street food that will otherwise give you plastic ones.

Great point! It is so easy to add up the waste when you are traveling! And obviously, taking metal cutlery through the airport is a nono.

I LOVE my bamboo cutlery. I have found it's much lighter than silverware and it lays flatter so it's easier to pack.😊

It’s really nice to see the pitfalls of low waste portrayed. I’ve been using the same plastic takeaway containers I’ve had for years while desperately wanting to upgrade to glass/ stainless steel. I’m so glad you made this. I related to it so much. 😊

I just reuse glass containers from honey, coconut oil, and other products I buy. We get so much glass products, I think I won't buy new drinking glasses once our old ones break :)

@Yves I think that is key -- avoiding the single use stuff, as its 1/2 the plastic used today, can't think of a better (or easier) place to start.

I had been thinking I would like to upgrade my plastic containers (when they eventually break as they are cheap ones and won’t last forever) to glass, as I try to reduce the amount of plastic I use overall in my life... then I got a new job and got the train to and from work. Glass is sooooo much heavier!! I’m rethinking my plan to replace all the plastic!

@@nyssac2914 I have a tiffin for work, its a stainless lunch box with stacked compartments, its not very heavy, and I throw it at people when i get take out too so it saves plastic that way too. i get anxiety over the way take out melts styrofoam, so it helps with that too.

I will not regret buying my menstrual cup because it has been a real game changer. It has expanded the time between having to use a toilet, I can go to work without having to care about when to go to the loo, I can go work out or swimming without a problem!

Laura Pawlowski Same, literally the only time I didn't like it so much was the first couple of months getting used to positioning/ removing it, and then the stem length when I was climbing bunks changing beds at summer camp for my job - but it was an easy fix to cut the stem as I soon realised.

Bamboo/wood cutlery, especially chopsticks and spoons, are really great cooking utensils because they aren’t as rough on your pots and pans as metal is, so if you’re struggling to use them as often as you’d like, maybe a stir fry spoon/turner/rice paddle or tong alternative is something you could repurpose them for! Just be sure to let them dry properly after washing them before storing them to prevent them from rotting

I actually have some hard plastic kitchen wear from Ikea, that I bought when I moved into my first flat. Well...once I cooked and left my spatula in the pan for a moment...and it just melted into my food. I messed up a lot of pans because I used plastic or metal spatulas...and I really regret buying them. So only thing my wooden one can't do as well is flipping burgers. But other than that it's great.

Actually I love having a single and a double walled bottle. The double walled is soooo heavy in comparison to the single walled! When I have uni and I can refill the bottle all the time I use the single walled because my law books are already so heavy that my back hurts. When I travel I love the double walled because the water stays the temperature I want it to

I do the opposite 😂 at school I carry my double-walled because it's smaller but when I travel I take the single because it's lighter and bigger so I don't have to fill up as often.

@@user-angela-55 how funny! I especially use the single walled as it's only 0.5 liters, so I'm forced to leave the room every so often to get a refill. So I get moving and don't sit in class for four hours straight 🙄 My double walled flask it 1 liter so it's around four times the weight with the extra layer of stainless steel 🙈. When traveling I'm always afraid of running out of water, because sometimes I don't find a place where I can refill (especially in countries where you can't drink tab water) but I can see your point too!

I love my single walled water bottle much that I bought multiples, I have a very temperature sensitive mouth and I love tea! (The bane of my existence) so I purchased a fee neoprene sleeves for a grip, put boiling water and my tea in my bottle and it cools down much faster so I am able to drink it! I tried doing this in a double walled bottle and I couldnt drink my tea almost all day =/

I think the bottom line is to not make being "zero-waste/sustainable" another first world problem driven by keeping up with the Jones and virtue signaling. Get what you need and what is practical but don't fall into just being a duped consumer, the same as anyone else, except you are tagged as "zero-waste/sustainable". It's all still branding.

Stainless steel containers are one of those things that I'm always tempted to buy but then I remember that I mostly need those kinds of container to carry food to work and most of that food I heat up in the microwave. I have glass containers and they're perfect -plus, I already had them

You can't even see through stainless steel containers anyways so it's better that you just use your glass containers .. that would drive me nuts just putting it in the fridge and forgetting about what is in it D: I love my glass containers

Yeah, it's hard and confusing times with lots of different businesses getting on the zero waste trend and making us think need their sustainable products when we have perfectly good items at home. The take home is shop your home first, then a friend's house then second hand stores.

I really like my silicone softy straws & use them everyday. I regret trying to make my own shampoo w Dr Baroner’s soap & coconut milk, made my hair so sticky! Switching to shampoo bar was much better.

Thank you for this useful video! As many beginners in zero waste, I thought that I have to replace as many things as possible with sustainable ones and, maybe, buy some more. It`s a huge mistake! I`m from Ukraine and some of such items are incredibly expensive here. So for the first time, I was upset I couldn`t buy all of them. But then I understood that zero waste is not about buying things but about changing your thinking and lifestyle. So it`s not necessary to buy containers, straws, coffee cups, toothpaste, deodorant and so on if I don`t use them or can make by myself.

Unfortunately, using a metal straw as a prop makes people more prone to buy one, because you are so respected. I was feeling that I should buy a metal straw because I keep seeing them in so many KZfaq channels but I am the same as you and don't ever use one now. So thanks for the tip but please remember that using them in your videos does promote their purchase, especially when it is so prevalent. Consider asking a friend or family member who currently buys plastic straws if they would like yours!

But you forget there's still a load of people who are using straws and metal or bamboo ones will always be better than plastic ones! So there are two sides to this and promoting reusable straws instead of disposable ones can make some people more conscious about small changes that help the planet. I think in all of this it's the most important thing.

With straws, it really depends on what you drink. If you're OK with simple water and occasional smoothies, you probably won't need them. But if you drink juices (from citrus fruits in particular), sugary soda or even very cold drinks, straws will make a difference for your teeth.

Personally, I drink iced coffee everyday (college student) so I don’t regret my metal straws/reusable to-go cups! Also, my reusable pads, menstrual cup, & to-go cutlery has helped me a lot. However, I regret some conditioner bars I bought (didn’t work well) & some other expensive lush products I bought on impulse because I like their philanthropy :/

YES to not buying a new "to go" cutlery set... one of my biggest regrets as well when I could have taken forks from my kitchen wrapped in my reusable napkin.

That's what I do. I wrapped them in a clean wash cloth. Wrap on a rubberband.

I feel you on the straw thing but they stopped being a regret for me when I realised how incredibly useful they are when you're sick and can't sit up properly to drink or eat soup etc. so they're now stored alongside my 'sick-kit' with my ginger tea and lozenges etc that I exclusively use when sick or having a flare up. I'm chronically ill and catch a lot of stuff but I only realised that use for them after seeing some other disabled people discussing the issues with the plastic straw bans and talking about the reasons why they're necessary for a lot of people. I was close to giving them to anyone who would take them before that because it bothered me that they were taking up space in my drawer but hey they're now out of sight but available when I need them :)

I've been on the fence about getting a reusable straw but now I think I don't really need it. I almost never use straws and I do have a plastic water bottle that came with a plastic straw that I could always grab if I felt I really needed one. I get really distracted by the aesthetics of zero waste/minimalism sometimes and this was a good reminder to always bring it back to the practical.

I’m with you on the straws!! only way I see it useful is if I need a straw for a drink I buy where otherwise they would be giving me a disposable one but, in that case they legit also give you a plastic cup so what’s the point... it’s hard sometimes for a fast food restaurant to fill up a reusable cup I don’t know why but I think it all comes down to convenience for them... sometimes they make your drink in the plastic cup and then dump it into your reusable one like... well that defeats the purpose of me asking you to put it in my cup I brought

I totally get it - the only reason i'm not convinced about it being harder for restaurants to use your reusable cup is because in the UK we have loads of convenience restaurants that offer a huge discount to bring your own cup and therefore have a much bigger consumer base using their own things. I think when something like that happens they need to adapt to a changing consumer habit and help them be more sustainable. Hopefully Canada aren't too far behind :) and will make reusables more of a norm xxxxxx

@@annievautour9069 I think some of the Tim's locations have stopped doing that (that's what someone told me), they have reusable ones. I don't go there much so I haven't noticed for myself but I do recall a news article that someone had called them out over this and they had said they would look into changing. I do agree it defeats the purpose of using a reusable mug if they already have it made in a disposable one and just pour it in.

I'm so glad I didn't hop onto the straw thing. Haha. I regret buying glass tupperware. They're heavy, I'm always afraid of breaking them, not good for taking out at all. They're fine for at home though. My travel mug is so nasty! It's impossible to clean the lid. I really should have looked into the design more.

I like my bamboo cutlery as I take it out and about with me in my bag, to work, on trips etc. I stopped myself getting straws and was pleased with myself for that. I don’t like my plastic Tupperware but I do use it and the good thing is that you can see what’s in them, whereas with stainless steel or pottery jars you can’t and it’s easy to forget about what’s in them and let it go to waste.

I totally love this video it’s so realistic from a different pov on these types of things. I 100% agree with the straw thing too because I never even used to use them, I’d just drink from the glass like a regular person 😅 However, it has been very handy when out and about because there’s always a metal straw in the bottom of my bag so I never use a plastic one. Theres a few in my kitchen drawers and I’m always reaching for them for when the kids come around too. I’ve even given a straw to my sister because she’s been taking more of an interest into using less plastic. I agree with your comment on wooden cutlery. I had one in my bag and the wooden one broke when someone stepped on my bag. The metal ones are more durable.

I love single wall bottles. I fill them with hot tea but I made a sleeve for it so later on the tea is only warmish, witch I like. Also, I love using glass bottles. More fragile, but the drinks taste better.

I'm actually really proud of buying the metal straws i currently have. Everytime I ordered some type of smoothie or wanted to drink something while I was away from home they always come in handy. Also one of the best parts of using them in public is watching people become interested and inspiring them to grow into a more sustainable lifestyle!

I’ve been slowly transitioning towards minimalism and zero waste for a couple of years now. As I live on an extremely tight income, I could not afford to splurge on needless items, but have been forced to use what I already have or get creative. I wanted produce bags but they are expensive, so I watched a tutorial online and made my own bags using curtain netting remnants from my local craft store. I will be also making my own beeswax wraps, again from a remnant of organic cotton. I just have to find some beeswax used for candle-making. I find that my sewing machine and skills come in useful for this. Now that I have the bags, I am eliminating single use plastic produce bags. Instead of reusing the plastic bags for food storage or kitchen waste, I have to rethink how I store food at home. It’s more a matter of changing old habits really. I find small businesses to be essential for the transition. My local bakery sells me bread without plastic. My local butcher sells meat without the prepackaged trays, the greengrocer is an easy switch too. When I buy from the supermarkets now, I think about the packaging before I buy it. Zero waste is a goal, not a reality. Until businesses get on board with returning to sustainability, we will be fighting a sea of plastic waste. That said, I recycle soft plastic at the supermarket, this is made into durable products. I have switched to recycled end products, like toilet paper, paper towels, etc. I recently purchased an outdoor rug made from recycled PET and some placemats made from recycled cotton. I also rescued a good timber side table from the landfill for my balcony, and even a hanging plant which I have revived. The journey has opened my eyes now. Each time I go to the shops, my “plastic blindness” has disappeared and all I see is an ocean of plastic.

I found a recipe for homemade toothpaste: 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, about 1/4 teaspoon baking soda (or more if you like) and 25-30 drops of peppermint oil. (I don't use much baking soda in it because, to me, it tastes too salty.) Coconut oil is very good for preventing cavities, and the peppermint flavor makes it taste great. I find myself wanting to brush my teeth multiple times a day! :)

I use my glass straw about 3-4 times a week at home for smoothies because I use a nutribullet and because I am lazy I drink it straight from the blender cup and I find it more comfortable to use a straw for this 😉 But other than this I agree that they don't see enough use for most people so very good video for anyone starting their low waste life 👍

I was thinking that maybe you could give your single walled bottle to someone who has a small child. Typically small children don’t like drinks to be either too hot or too cold so it might be perfect for them. 🤷‍♀️ Thank you for being so honest and giving us clarity amongst all of the hype and trends. I regret the keep cup, it's not leak proof, it's expensive, I got the medium one and feel like it's just not big enough if I want a big coffee. I ended up buying some take away drink cup for my coffee from Starbucks and it's way better. It's metal, lightweight and leak proof. I never use my keep cup, it's just not practical for on the go at all.

Yes.....the straw I too don't use it but my husband use it all the time. The bamboo spork. I open up the draw full of forks, spoons, knives and said why did I buy the bamboo thing. It's still sitting there next to steel unticles.

I regret buying snack bags with velcro on it, I mean, I bought four of them.. It's not easy to wash because there's velcro on it. Even though I bought it on sale, I regret buying them because I'm not using it as much as I should (I'm so lazy to wash them). Instead, I use napkins, silicone pouch (such as stasher bag), or just use my lunch box for snacks. I also regret buying bamboo toothbrush holder, bamboo cutleries (dang, they're getting moldy easily), foldable cutleries, collapsible lunch box, collapsible cup, collapsible water bottle, extra shopping bag with different sizes/materials, fancy stainless water bottle like what you've said (it burnt myself when I fill it with hot water), jars (I could just reuse jars when I bought something instead of buying new one. I'm not patient at first), and reusable cotton pads (I could just use cloth). Zero waste items are so expensive and I'm trapped with this new commercial "tricks". I feel worse for earth. At some point, I want to buy consumable items (such as shampoo bar, deodorant, etc). I don't buy them anymore, I make these things myself. I remind myself to use what I have, because my aim is to live more sustainable, not to replace my stuff to be a "truly" zero waste.

Love the sincerity of the video and how relatable it is. I personally struggle with holding on to items I don't use because I don't want them to go to waste and I hate the clutter it causes. One thing I can recommend when going low waste is camping shops. Found a swiss army knife like cutlery set that contains a detachable fork, spoon and knife and some stainless steel containers with compartments and other stuff there! Oh, and grandmothers have the best advice (as always). Learnt so much about in-home food preservation and in general being lower waste from mine

toothpaste suggestion for someone who needs it: georganics natural toothpaste. my favorite flavour is red mandarin (sounds weird, but is actually nice, I found). now I have the charcoal one, but that tastes a little weird/bitter, so I would recommend the mandarin.

As a hiker backpacker and outdoors enthusiast I really appreciate having the single walled bottle and bamboo utensils. On day hikes I bring the stainless steel food containers but a better choice probably would've been stasher bags so I may invest in those eventually :)

I think the fashion for straws came about because of the fashion for drinking out of jars and weird things rather than glasses, cups or mugs. It was very silly. I’ve ended up using my metal straw quite a lot though, due to having dental surgery! Fortunately I kept my plastic tubs - the safe and useful stuff, anyway. When it comes to drinks bottles, I wish that more people would get their parents’ thermoses out of the attic or loft! I have a thermos king flask, with its metal cup/bowl attached. Great for food or drink, hot or cold, and much more practical than the trendy bottles. My big mistake was buying several books about zero waste when they more or less said the same thing. One would have done! You’ve been so helpful - it’s because of you that I’ve avoided various mistakes.

Great video! Here are my regrets: *ECOlunchbox solo cube: I got it for sandwiches but it’s small, it’s not tall enough for my loaded veggie sandwiches, and it doesn’t seal shut. I donated it and went back to using my old plastic sandwich container instead. *Metal straws: like you, I hardly used straws before going low waste, so I don’t know why I thought I needed to buy reusable straws. I do use the straws occasionally for cocktails (because drinking a bloody mary without a straw never goes well!) so I kept them. *Cuppow mason jar with reusable coffee cup lid and coozy: I thought this would help me cut back on the number of reusables that I need to carry around by making a mason jar more suitable for gettin hot coffee to go. But, it ended up being a hassle having to switch out the regular metal lid for the drinkable lid and I found that I prefer using a regular leak-proof metal thermos that I can just throw in my bag. *Beeswax wraps: I realllly wanted to like these but I just don’t think they’re that functional. I bought them to use to cover leftovers but the wraps don’t seal well around bowls. I prefer to use a plate, plastic lid, or cloth cover instead. Some people use them to wrap up whole foods like tomatoes and avocados but I prefer to just store leftovers in jars. Also, I find that they’re kinda annoying to clean. I do still occasionally use the wraps for storing fresh bread so I kept them.

I love this video, it's helped me to think twice before I buy items as I try to become less wasteful. I haven't tried many toothpastes as many don't have fluoride (and my dentist says that I need it) but I've found dentabs, which are great! I got mine from a UK company called Non Plastic Beach, in case anyone is looking to try it. The taste is minty, so very similar to most major toothpaste brands in plastic, the biggest difference is the texture before it turns into a paste, but I don't find it to be difficult.

Hell Yes!!!! Thank you for this video. I´m now in my journey through minimalism and starting into Zero waste issues and for me its common sense some of the things that you mention. I see a lot of KZfaqrs and brands trying to promote things like the straws or the Bambu cutlery instead of not using anything if you don't need it or simply using the things that you already have, and honestly I think that everyone has spoons and forks at home, so thank you for your common sense.

I hadn't even realised that my straws were a wasted purchase. You're so right! My other is Guppyfriend - I bought one and I honestly hate it - you can't wash a full load so you end up doing two loads of laundry for what should be one, you also have to run an additional spin cycle because it retains water and it leaves white bits of plastic on your clothes.

Thank you for sharing this. For people who are starting with this lifestyle, all of these “fashionable” items may seem as a necessity while in reality, they are not. I only bought a couple of glass straws that I am by far not using as much as I thought I would. Also, I have the strange feeling that the glass would break while drinking through them. Besides that I am always trying to be conscious of what I am buying and how it would fit my actual lifestyle. For instance, I never take coffee to go because my favorite type of serving is espresso which takes no time at all to drink, so there is no need to buy a reusable coffee cup

I think it a little cultural, my niece is 3 and she drinks off a cup, a glass one. I don't have any plastic plate, cutlery or straws for here. I feel like the straw culture it's much worse in America because people always drinks things on the go and people really like things ice cold.

I bought glass snapware instead of full plastic. They do have plastic lids, but they're bpa-free and when the lids eventually wear out and break, I can use waxed clothes on them easily. I prefer the glass because it's far more versatile- oven, freezer, etc, but also, I can see what's in it. And that makes a huge difference in my eating habits- I remember to eat it before it goes bad! On the flip, I have stainless steel and titanium cutlery, and I love it. Other than that, I think my favorite zero-waste is my travel mug collection. I have 5! and I love them so so much! I have different ones I use for each thing, because plastic lids absorb flavor, so I've got a 8-oz for wine, two 16-oz's each for coffee and tea, and a 20-oz that I have to remove the lid to drink from, and I use that for other odd-ball things. and a 36-oz thermos! I love them all.

I really feel you on that straw thing. I had six stainless steel and glass straws in my drawer at home but like, the only time I ever used a straw was a restaurants (because they give them to you and going to places with my mom made me squeamish about how clean the glasses at restaurants and cafeteria’s are). My collapsible one that I leave in my purse was really the only one I ever used. Fortunately, my roommate last year was the type of person to use a straw for *EVERYTHING* - with soda cans, bottled drinks, her tea, her smoothies. She used to buy a package of plastic straws every month and it took me a good minute to finally say “please just use these instead”. They’re getting way more use with her now than they ever were with me

They can be useful apparently if you are drinking pop or fruit juice that can damage your teeth. Straws are supposed to direct it past your teeth and protect them a bit. Not sure if it's true, I don't drink either of those or use straws :P

I really appreciate your honesty, and especially this video. Sometimes people promote a lifestyle change as an “all or nothing” sort of deal. So, for example, if you want to be low/zero waste, you need to suck it up and deal with crappy toothpaste. The other thing is falling into the temptation to purchase “sustainable” accessories to get started. I didn’t do that this time, but just used my all time favorite kitchen item that I had en masse: mason jars. Thank you for reminding us that we are human and free to make exceptions, bend the rules, and do what works for ourselves. Your videos have inspired me to move towards a more low waste lifestyle. Thank you!

The most ok toothpaste I've found is the powder one from Lush (you can return the packaging and they'll recycle it). Tastes a bit strong at the beginning but then I got used to it.

Well done! I loved your video and honesty. It was really helpful to me as I've been strategising how to lower my waste further. Unfortunately, it is not going well, mostly because of lack of options in my country (no bulk food buying!), so I'm trying to be creative and focus on making a difference in aspects of my life that I can. Straws - bought them for my kids because they do use them, especially in film theatres. But then they come home with a tall to-go plastified cup 🙄 and a plastic straw, because they FORGOT. Now, the bamboo cutlery was a success - my son used to take just our regular ones from the drawer until I noticed we were missing half of our tea spoons and forks. They got eaten by the Room Of Requirements in school.

I've been waiting to see a video like this, thank you! I went to a zero waste workshop and was given a stainless steel straw and beeswax wraps for free, and I had to give them away in a fb group because I knew I would never have any use for them. Also I just saw an ad for reusable silicone sandwich bags that are printed with images of mason jars, so when u put a sandwich or something it looks like its in a jar? Seems very stupid to me and pretty much embodies the trend of buying mass produced "zero waste" items for the aesthetic.

I'm so glad that you talked over this topic. On the way of going sustainable, there's a counter commercialization and consumerism of "eco-friendly" market. Sustainability is also about thoughtful consumption of necessary things and it can be achieved stage by stage by learning about ourselves. We can't fall on the bandwagon but have to be evaluate our patterns. I'm learning and best wishes to you too on your journey.

Thank you for making this video! IMO, the best strategy is that you only switch to low-waste alternatives when you notice in your life that you are producing a significant amount of waste due to certain products. Don't change your lifestyle. Just swap what you are already using.

Yes, straws! Totally agree. I never used straws at home before, but was really drawn to the stainless steel ones. I did use them a lot for a couple years, until my hsuband finally admitted that he has hated the sound of my metal straw "clinking and clanging" against my mason jar. So, I've stopped using them and really don't miss them! My lips sipping from the glass works just fine, and doesn't make any sound! :) (My kids do like using the straws though, so they're still getting used).

I have been on low waste lifestyle about 20 years. I was nearly zero waste before I had kids. After kids I had to luse and think what is simble and good for our family. I will try my best. I buy (and always will) items second hand and try to buy food plastic free. I still want to see if they have tought something new for saving our planet.

this video was fantastic. it shows that you've grown and learned along your journey toward more sustainable living. no one is perfect, and I think it's helpful for those of us also on that journey to see your learning processes and know that, hey, you're not perfect either... you are one of my biggest sources of inspiration and motivation. thank you for all you do 💜

I bought a set of bamboo cutlery (spoon, knife, fork, and chopsticks) that all come in a nice little pouch a few years ago, and I adore them because I just leave them in my lunch box and don't have to think about grabbing utensils from the house before I leave for work. I also like to keep a cloth napkin in my lunchbox. Helps me be more prepared in the mornings.

thank you for this! It really is about using what you already have. For tupperware replacements, I simply use (ceramic or porcelain) bowls with an upside down plate on top. Replaces cling wrap as well. I reuse a glass bottle as travel bottle, so never bought a reusable bottle so far either.

Thank you so much for this video! I was wondering about buying some sustainable things but I also think that I might not use them as much. I think it’s great that you encourage repurposing items that we already have instead of buying new items that we might not actually use or need.

I have a metal straw and chopsticks for eating out so as to not use their plastic things and they hardly take up any space in my bag. It might look weird eating all kinds of foods with chopsticks for other people but I don’t care lol. ✌🏼🥢

I appreciate that you acknowledge how the freebies from companies can also be a waste or regret. Straws come in handy for me, since I do use them for cold beverages. Don’t look into toothpaste, but a tube can last me years to begin with so I’m picky about the brand and ingredients. All my reusable water bottles are excellent and used, but I also work on the go. I use glass containers at home. Never did see the point behind the wooden cutlery.

I love this. I have been avoiding buying pretty much all of those products for the very same reasons. Straws, ugh. Since I started watching a lot of sustainability and vegan videos, I have been a little puzzled about how many people use straws. Doesn't anyone know how to drink normally? Why do we even need straws? I never drink from straws and they are SO BAD for the environment. It's nice that there is a more sustainable version for those who do use them, but I am not one of them! I love what you are doing with these videos. It is so important. I wish that this form of media was available when I was young like you because it was very difficult for me, even though I was trying very hard to live as "sustainably" as possible. I say that in quotes because nobody was using that word 30 years ago. Anyway, keep up the good work!

I love that you share mistakes and regrets. So many want to appear faultless. I know I would have regretted special cutlery. I just have silverware in a baggie. I'm disabled and the weight doesnt bothersome, but i guess i leave some things at work. I regret buying so many reusable grocery bags. I use all mymany bulk/veggie bags, but i dont need 14 grocery bags... i use 2. I've been using some pretty ones as zero waste gift bags for friends birthdays and such

I’m very new to sustainable living and still have a very long way to go but the biggest thing for me was understanding my most consistent wasteful habits. As a result, I got a KeepCup, a stainless steel water bottle, a steel straw, a menstrual cup and a French press for my coffee at home and the different that alone has made is crazy. I also changed some of my buying habits. Now I only buy loose fruit and veg, if I buy fizzy drinks I get a recyclable can, and I try to get recyclable packaging as much as I can. I’m getting there!

I never used straws because I did not like the plastic ones. I bought a set of glass straws for my brother and kept two. And I love using them! I use them if I'm drinking tap water, which is what I mostly drink, but I like a fizzy drink once in a while, and I really enjoy using straws. I think I would not use those metal containers as well as a reusable coffee cup but I'm always tempted to buy some.

I’m planning on getting a double edged spoon/fork/knife combo that’s made of Bamboo, and possibly a few toothbrushes. I’m new to the group, so I’ll try out as much recommended products as I can! My aunt and I are also trying to make more and more minimal waste items like reusable bags, rag rugs, and quilts. The fabric scraps from the quilts, and baggies get put into the rag rugs, and any scraps from that will go into Pillow stuffing, and hopefully one day dog toys, and generally put into pet toys, and such of the sort!

Thanks for making this video Immi, really appreciate I'm not the only one really questioning these things. For me the semi-regret is also the cutlery... I use it when I travel yes, but I don't think it was necessary, could have grabbed an old light spoon and chopsticks from my kitchen (which I already do for work every day) and saved me the money and packaging from the postage...

Hey Immy thanks for another video :) I don't normally use a straw either but actually I found it really useful travelling last year to foreign countries where English wasn't really spoken (and they didn't understand when I tried to speak their language) to actually refuse plastic straws. Often they wouldn't understand why I wouldn't want a straw but showing that I actually had my own seemed to help! Have a great week xx

I really liked this video, the zero waste movement (to me at least) puts sooo much emphasis on the aesthetic and it's nice to see someone saying that you really don't need to swap everything to steel and bamboo. Using plastic tupperware shouldn't be such a faux pas lol.

My compromise for toothpaste is to find one without SLS (but still fluoride). There are quite a few on iHerb, though the prices do vary.

I bought some coconut bowls and regret it because they cannot hold hot liquids without cracking. I live in a cold climate (and even in the summer I have to wear sweaters indoors because of excessive AC use), so hot soups are a staple of my diet. On the other hand, I love my wooden cutlery set because it doesn't clank (is that the right word?) around in my bag like metal does.
