Thank you for the clear and concise info. I have been trying to get a grasp on the difference between literature and fleeting notes for a while now but this summed it up well. I think something important that people need to realize is that the system is likely to develop changes based on each individual's style, preferences, habits. Cheers on the good video :)

Hi Petar! Totally agree to your point that the system can changed based on each person’s needs. One thing to keep in mind regarding the original Zettelkasten is that it’s intended for academic research and publications which could be more or less relevant to some people.

@@dsuthapong One question that came up after i tried the Zettelkasten approach is the coding system for organizing the permanent note. I know that related cards should be put in the same stack. However can you share the principle of how we put number of each card, or each topic or area? Also, if it’s an idea for a project, and not purely academic, should it be in fleeting or permanent? Thank you.

It beings a tear to my eye to see people in the video writing notes with a computer on their desk. It was developed long before computers and smart phones were prevalent. It seem totally computer-phobic to use any kind of paper based system in 2023. - - - It’s like building a house without using a hammer. I have watched 3-5 videos on Zettlekasten. They all describe the system in the way Luhmann designed it. What would be much more valuable would be for someone to make a video that demonstrates how to use the system with one of the more well-known note-taking system like Apple Notes or Evernote.

I guess I"m dumb. I still don't get it. I wish someone would just put it in practice on video. Like actually read several pages of a book, take their notes, think out loud, etc. I understand what it does, but I don't understand how to do it. This is a good video, but it seems like every video on the subject is saying the same thing from the 'How to take smart notes' book, which is the problem. I come to the videos because I didn't fully understand the book. 😭

It was invented by a smart German scholar named Nicholas Luhmann, who wrote over 60 books and 600 articles! The main idea is to help you learn and develop ideas by writing and thinking critically. Zettelkasten uses different types of notes called literature notes, permanent notes, hub notes, and fleeting notes. Literature notes are taken when you read something, while permanent notes are your own thoughts and ideas. Hub notes are like a table of contents, and fleeting notes are quick thoughts you have during the day that you transfer to other notes later. The system works by putting related notes together and linking them, so it's easy to find information and explore different ideas. You can create a Zettelkasten using index cards in a box or even digitally with an app. To get started with Zettelkasten, you can summarize books and articles, transfer your existing notes, or focus on your favorite problems to learn more about a topic. The most important thing is to make Zettelkasten a habit by scheduling time to work on it every day.

I've discovered Zettalkasten and Obsidian recently and your videos have helped me understand them in the simplest way. Love your editing and flow of speaking. Great work Darin! I'm slowly working on importing all my notes that are scattered in so many notebooks and apps. But I'm starting to see the potential of this system to help me make better use of all these knowledge. An idea for your future videos, if I may suggest. I would be interested to see how you use the notes you've made to create something. Perhaps you have a workflow that incorporates your zettalkasten with making videos? I'm quite interested in the application of this system in practical ways as I've yet to find content about this elsewhere. Cheers!

You know what's interesting Hikari, this vid references (Like a zettleKasten) to other youtube vids which the information came from. Incredible, thank you for your valuable content Darin. I'm curious, do you incorporate technical knowledge into your Zettelkasten system as well? For example how to use a software? While Zettelkasten seems effective for conceptual ideas, follow-up questions, and reflections, I'm uncertain about integrating technical content. I worry it might inundate my Zettelkasten with numerous reference notes.

Hi K. Eng, nice and thorough explanation of Zettelkasten! Seems like the sources of this system will be mainly from data sources that you learn/absorb daily. In actual working environment, there are lots of information flowing through that you will also take notes. How should we distill what information to be maintained in PKM?
@dsuthapong
@dsuthapong Жыл бұрын
Hi K. Tanat! Thanks for your question. There is no easy answer to this question 😂 The rule of thumb is to "not keep too much or too little" in your PKM system. The way you know is to try! If you find yourself capturing so much and most of the stuff ended not being used at all and cluttering your system, you might be capturing too much. On the other hand if you find yourself often thought of something you had come across before but didn't capture, you might be capturing too little. The guideline is to capture what resonates, rare, personal, or useful. I know this might not be a straight-forward answer but I hope this helps 😊

Question: So in regards to the Zettelkasten's base systematic structure along with how the person develops insights based on connections between what they have read and what insights they have discovered, which class of notes would you consider making up the bulk of the Zettelkasten? My first guess would just be Literature notes making up the majority between Fleeting and Permanent, but I'm looking for some other opinions in the matter.

Thanks for the question! A Zettelkasten is made up mainly of permanent notes. They are stored in the “main slip box” whereas the literature notes are stored in the “reference slip box.”

Hi I love your videos. Quick question... How do I make better permanent notes with great care. Maybe I am not deep enough but my notes are pretty simple. I do know that writing aobut what you read in your own words is the core part of notetaking without plagiarism. But showing examples of source text and then your notes in a future video would be helpful. If not no worries. I can learn from this video.

I can share some examples: Source: You know that feeling you have after a big meal? When you’re so full that you don’t want anything more? Ever wonder what that would feel like in other parts of your life? My permanent note: To figure out what you really want in life, ask yourself what you'd do if you're truly Full -- Source: Actions, not words, reveal our real values. My permanent note: Your Actions reveal your true desires more than what you say

I never understood why literature notes and permanent notes can't be combined. One contains what the source said in your own words that you dont want to forgot. The other contains insights and ideas. I feel like you could combine the two easily sometimes. Any thoughts on what I am missing?
@dsuthapong
@dsuthapong Жыл бұрын
Great point! This is the key concept to Zettelkasten. The core idea is to “distill the insights to the atomic level” so that you can mix and match ideas together for different purposes. For example: if you read a book, and you write down all the insights into a literature note, all the insights is kept only in that note. However, if you write down into several permanent notes, each insight can be connected to form new ideas. I might need to create a video to explain this 😂

@@dsuthapongthis is a great video idea! I’ve seen (and skipped) too many so-called Zettelkasten videos that start out by artificially creating a Table of Contents or numbering system instead of trusting the organic process that comes with the Zettelkasten’s infinite numbering system.

Your videos encourage me to keep using the system to build knowledge. Thanks for another great explanation about Zettelkasten. I am currently kind of struggling with the literature notes. I have the feeling that I was just copying the authors words and that makes me feel I am not taking any value...Do you happen to have any tips to help me out with that?
@dsuthapong
@dsuthapong 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Richie for your comments! I actually think that it’s not a big deal to “copy” some of author’s words for the literature notes. The key purpose of literature notes is to “capture” things you don’t want to forget. That being said, there’s also one technique that I use when taking literature notes. It’s from Jim Kwik (Brain and Memory coach). He advises that, when taking notes on a piece of paper, you draw a line in the middle of a page and on the left you do “note taking” where you write down what the presenter/author says, and on the right you do “note making” where you write down your reactions to what’s on the left. Your reaction could be your feelings, agreement/disagreement, other follow-up questions that come up, etc. I hope this technique helps! Let me know if this works for you :D

@@dsuthapong Hi again Darin, Quick question about literature notes: Would you suggest to delete the literature notes after being distilled and converted into permanent notes? I have the feeling I have to get rid of them so avoid clutter in my vault but I fear at the same time that I might need them as reference in the future. Thanks for your support in advance!

3:54: this is not a Hub-note, but an Indexcard. The Index was an essential element of Luhmanns Zettelkasten, that should be mentioned. Also the term "fleeting note" is not something Luhmann used, and frankly I dont see the point of mentioning something which is thrown away anyway.

Thanks Kao! And great questions! I should have made this clearer ^^ The classic way of linking is between permanent notes, to build connections of knowledge you have accumulated. However, you can link anything to anything.

HI. If have a serios of notes that are factual, where do they belong in the Zettle Kasten method? For example: I collected in a note all the most important markup formatting for obsidian, gathered from several sources, or in another note I have the list of all the satellites of Jupiter. They are statements of facts not ideas. But I still want to keep and be able to access them. Where do I store them?

Great questions! There’s no perfect place for such things in the original system. However these kinds of notes most resemble “hub notes” In Zettelkasten. These notes are “hubs” to collect information from different sources.

Hi Darin, this is wonderful! I'm Radif from Indonesia and just recently learn about Zettelkasten. Your video explain the Zettelkasten in a very detailed yet simple way, so thanks and I subscribe to your channel immediately. Anyway, currently I'm interested how to apply Zettelkasten in a digital way. I am interested in these questions: 1. How Luhmann will use Zettelkasten if he live in current days? 2. There is some argument over chaining notes where you spread lots of idea into several notes due to limited writing space. Some said that this is not necessary in digital format as your note is very flexible. The problem with this is the note atomicity, do we really need to make the note as atomic as possible and spread them into several notes? Currently I prefer putting whatever comes to mind in a single topic into single note, for practical reason. I think it is easier to manage too. 3. Do we need to regularly purge unneeded fleeting notes? Seems like a hassle to me, and sometime I think that they are being done because the box limitation. But with the availability of search engine inside our tool and unlimited space, this task is no longer relevant. 4. Do hub notes really relevant in digital Zettelkasten? I mean there is already tagging, category, and search engine. Some tools (e.g. Obsidian) even provide graph to show topic connection and clustering. 5. Overall, how Zettelkasten could evolve in this digital age. I am sure that as there are many style in applying Zettelkasten, some could miss what Luhmann has intended and thus making it less effective. And some other could aid the original one and making it more effective. I am sure that given the simplistic nature of this technique, there are still room for improvement. Anyhow, whichever the style is, as you said in the video the most important think is the process or the daily routine. I hope that you can answer these question in your next video. Once again thanks a lot! 😃
