NEW NEW 2021!!! AMAZING NEW LULLABY by Pergolesi, sung by magical Ernestina. Do not miss it: • Pergolesi: A Golden F...
Suo Gân (Welsh pronunciation: [sɨɔ ɡɑːn]) is a traditional Welsh lullaby written by an anonymous composer. It was first recorded in print around 1800 and the lyrics were notably captured by the Welsh folklorist Robert Bryan. The song's title simply means lullaby (suo = lull; cân = song).
Empire of the Sun is a 1987 American epic coming-of-age war film based on J. G. Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, and Nigel Havers. The film tells the story of Jamie "Jim" Graham, a young boy who goes from living in a wealthy British family in Shanghai to becoming a prisoner of war in a Japanese internment camp, during World War II. Suo Gan is the main musical theme of this cinema classic.

I also remember it from Empire of the Sun, and it has had an impact on me, especially being of British Chinese and (Liverpool) Welsh origin. My daughter sang it in a school choir long ago, and I am hoping my grandson, who is 3, will appreciate it as a little part of his Welsh heritage. Yes, there is a God, and He came to bring healing and peace through songs and hymns like this. I am glad others have experienced comfort and a measure of healing through it.

I remember this song in that touching scene in "Empire of the Sun." Just thought it was a beautiful song. But, now with the translated words to English, it makes the song even more poignant and profound. It captures Jim's longing to be comforted and embraced, especially during times of fear and uncertainty.

I’ve always identified with this movie, this song and Jim. For three years, we lived in Yokohama south of Tokyo from ‘59 to ‘62. Dad was an Officer with the Seventh Fleet. Country was so safe for kids, Mom let us roam all over greater Tokyo so long as we were home for dinner. What wonderful adventures for a kid 6 to 9 years old. This was post war Japan. We did know the places to avoid. The super nationalists still hated us. Jim’s adventures always reminded me of our adventures in Japan. The Cold War was scary. Soviet Union, China and North Korea all close by. The A-Bomb tests in Kazakhstan with the Strontium-90 falling on Japan with the rain. The Navy warned us when to stay indoors until the radiation had passed. Yuri Gagarin orbiting above us. My Sister’s friend literally disappeared one night. At a reunion, Sis learned her friend’s Dad was a U-2 pilot. Our Asian U-2s flew out of the Atsugi Naval Air Station west of Tokyo. When Gary Powers was shot down over Russia, Eisenhower ordered all the U-2s back to the States. Her friend’s family was literally put on a plane for home during the night. What great adventures in Japan. I watch this movie at least once a year. I can so easily identify with Jim and his adventures in China. Asia is a magnificent place for a Western Kid to grow up. Great movie. Great song. Great singer. Thank you so much for bringing back the memories.

This is awesome but theres a reason "super nationalists" hated you the American Government dropped 2 nuclear bombs on Japan just to show the Russians they arnt scared of using them.
@reidbronson6358
@reidbronson6358 3 жыл бұрын
@@Zach-dk4iu You are only partly right. The real reason we dropped the bombs was all due to President Truman. Remember, he served on the Western Front during WW I. After the terrible casualties at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, he knew the invasion on Japan would bring unacceptable casualties to the American people. Many voices had begun to call for negotiations with the Japanese. That would have left an intact, but reduced Japanese empire. Sorry Alright. You are only part right.

My mother, may God rest her Welsh soul, sang me to sleep with this. I can't hear it without tears. Strange, strange, that fine musicians and singers from a faraway country with a very rich musical tradition of its own, would record this, the simplest of lullabyes of a completely different people, in a strange language, and do it with such power and truth to itself. It almost gives me hope for humanity.

When I first heard this song, I didn't know it was Welsh. I thought it was a Japanese lullaby of death. When the English boy Jim sang this song to the young Japanese Kamikaze fighter pilots about to go up in the sky to die (The movie "Empire of the Sun") they didn't understand the words, but I believe they understood the song. The tragedy of war and so many wasted lives surpasses race, countries, and boundaries.

I'm a Welshman, here's the English translation. To my lullaby surrender, Warm and tender is my breast; Mother's arms with love caressing Lay their blessing on your rest; Nothing shall tonight alarm you, None shall harm you, have no fear; Lie contented, calmly slumber On your mother's breast my dear. Here tonight I tightly hold you And enfold you while you sleep, Why I wonder, are you smiling Smiling in your slumber deep? Are the angels on you smiling And beguiling you with charm, While you also smile, my blossom, In my bosom soft and warm? Have no fear now, leaves are knocking, Gently knocking at our door; Have no fear now, waves are beating, Gently beating on the shore. Sleep, my darling, none shall harm you Nor alarm you, never And beguiling those on high.

I am a proud Welshman this song is so very beautiful, and she sings it beautifully has well, If there is anything in the Welsh soul it is music and our love of singing listen to the National anthem at the millennium stadium on international rugby day it is a wonderful thing to experience in person.

From the time I first saw Empire Of The Sun, I had been thinking that this song was in Chinese... Tonight, because one of my sons had been watching Caru Canu, here on KZfaq, I learned that this song is in Welsh. The language of Christian Bale's people. And, that Spielberg hadn't picked this song to be in the movie, until after he had picked Bale to be in the movie...

Exquisite, utterly exquisite. To think that this woman memorised the lyrics of a Welsh song and sang it so beautifully is incredible. I can never hear it without crying. Commenter puffin51 put it beautifully, except that watching this absolutely gives me hope for humanity.

The origins of this lullaby, well known in Wales long before Empire of the Sun goes back 800 years. Much loved of choir masters who encourage boy trebles to sing it and as it is in the film, here we hear it as it should be, a mother soothing her baby to sleep.
