sm is really strict, some people said its way easier to win audition in SM, but when you became trainee it will getting hard, you dont know when will you debut. also, idol is not just "pretty face". you must have enough skill and *strong* characteristic.

exactly, they have a lot of trainees that now debuted in different groups. A lot of contributing factors, like charisma or charm during stage perf.

I have found like audition clips from Estream that is a part of SM. They didn’t want pretty face but they want people who have aura like when you look at them and you feel so interesting in them. As you can see a lot of SM idols are so attractive like when you look at them and you feel something is coming.

@@chowoodzmi3602 i also watched this show Boss in the Mirror. They were interviewing the CEO of ESteem (modeling agency under SM) and followed the audition in NY. And yea, they were looking for Aura instead of just a pretty face.

I don’t think SM has high standards when it comes to visuals but they can surely make your visuals high standard when you get into the company. They’re known to have the best plastic surgeon.

It’s fairly obvious it’s about looks rather than talent. Just watch any encore stage! There aren’t many groups in the big 3 that are actually full of good singers.

Exactly. I absolutely don't want to sound rude but I'm really astonished by the amount of people hating on sm in this comment section. Millions of people auditions to sm every year and they can't accept everyone right? If they accepted just everyone with good vocals and a decent face they would have way too many trainee right now. They have to make decisions to select someone and in order to do so they have some criteria. Sm is known for visuals yes but let's be honest every sm artist is full of talent and charisma. Sm is universally recognized as the agency with the best vocalists for a reason, they are really strict in judging the vocals too. It's unfair to say "they only care about look and that's why they didn't choose her". You didn't see her audition nor the other people who auditioned so you all can't just assume they excluded her just for her looks 🙄🙄🙄🙄(she is actually a lot pretty). It's really ignorant to do so...do you really think you are better at judging talent than people who do this as a job? Maybe there were other people who were better at singing or had more stage presence than her. Anyway I don't think sm actually have only extremely beautiful artists, not more then other agencies. Like have you seen the other girls groups not from sm? They have members just as beautiful and perfect. The idols who actually break the absurd korean beauty standards are really few. In sm there are also artists who doesn't perfectly fit the korean beauty standard. Look at amber liu or even giselle from aespa. And as for male idols there are some of them who are extremely attractive but other are quite normal overall. It's true that sm looks also at visuals but that's definitely not ALL they want. And don't think for a minute that other agencies are better from this point of view. It's just that if you are a bigger company there are more people who audition for you and this lead to more choices for them and less chance to enter for us. The problem is not sm, the problem is the korean beauty standard that is way to strict and unrealistic. If two people audition for the same agency and they are equally talented at singing but one fit more the standard and is more charismatic can you blame the agency if they choose the last one????? I don't think so. They have to think also about the future of the groups and sadly more beautiful are the idols more likely they are to succeed (obviously they also have to be talented). Even now a lot of people descover nee groups because some of them are a lot attractive and go viral on the social. We are all part of this mechanism too. Agencies just adapt to the society they live in. Change the society and the agency will change their criteria.

@@ericacella1180 indeed and idols who passed on big company like SMent is not only lucky but also talented indeed or full packaged (and also have strong personality) . They first goes to the eye of the needle before passing. Even if you passed as trainee on SMent, you will face challenges more until you debut, that's why many trainees leave the agencies before debuting (sometimes they give up because of hard training and stuffs)

SM usually pick from visual first because they believe that talent can be trained. That's why people said their training system is extreme and even harder than survival shows, but they also won't turned blind if they found someone who is so talented, for example like Shotaro (new member of NCT). At first, K-netizen judge his visual so hard and said he isn't 'SM type' of visual, but once he started his debut stage people is blown with his dance and performance and now K-netizen grow fond of him and being whipped with his talent and cute smile.

Honestly speaking, they can’t. It’s just how the world works. People with prettier faces are actually found pretty because our brain finds them easier to process and remember. So I guess that’s just the way it is.

For other company idk but this is just how SMe works that's the reason they r called the "visual garden" ya u might in terms of audition ur skills is more important but sm takes visual more seriously. And some trainees also comes from the street when the staff sees them very beautiful or handsome

lookism is very extreme in south korea. sm (and many other kpop companies) looking for “pretty faces” is the result from that. any idols that don’t fit the crazy beauty standards get a lot of internet hate/bullying (umji from gfriend for example even tho she was always pretty). you sound naïve. biologically, we subconsciously prefer pretty faces (research the halo effect). this “way of thinking” cannot be changed instantly

Yeah i sign myself as a kpoper not for that pathetic thing although they may have the reason doing so to seek the chance for idol in modeling. And by that, the whole capitalism idea is messed up, there is no respect and the standard is kinda fool oops :( i actually lost my respect if i heard that kpop is about beauty standard and other nasty things. At the end, if human have their clear mind will actually leave or not even touch that kind of industry, and here i am still stanning over the effort of how the idol are passionate in singin, dancin, or entertaining. But not so hard stannin like 3 years ago, i choose selectively and even more into the underground artists.
