【網中人】充滿自信的程緯（周潤發飾）大學畢業後，在玉福珠寶公司工作，表現出眾，更與太子女方希文（鄭裕玲飾）熱戀。惜好景不常，程緯為幫母償賭債，竟盜取公款，被野心勃勃的阮其昌（李道洪飾）揭發。程緯無奈入獄，希文亦傷心離港，而養家的重擔，使落在剛由大陸來港的程緯弟程燦（廖偉雄飾）身上。
後程緯出獄，得好友賀雋（任達華飾）介紹，進入其姊賀縈（繆騫人飾）之夜總會工作。另一方面，賀雋傾慕新晉女星區曉華（歐陽珮珊飾）多年，後更與程緯合力替曉華擺脫花花公子的魔掌。
惜賀縈不幸在車禍中身亡，而曉華得程緯悉心開解，二人互生情懷。此時，希文因父病危返港，與程緯重逢，舊情復熾，程緯、希文、曉華三人關係頓糾纏不清…後希文在其父死後接掌公司工作，但此時公司已由其昌控制。希文在逆境中得程緯復出協助，與其昌週旋到底，將其醜行一一揭破。

4 Feb 2022 (Part 2 of 3) Back in 1979 I was still doing my military service (Singapore) and there were of course nights in army camp when I missed the scheduled Mon-Fri free-to-air telecast on Channel 8 (8.30 - 9.30pm). Many episodes in fact. The tv set installed in the canteen was either locked up or tuned to English programmes (not everyone appreciates Cantonese dialect, understandably). Then again, even if I had booked out for the night, it was either returning back to camp before 12 midnight or catching the first bus service the next morning.

This series was made in the days when TVB drama was broadcasted while being made. In the original script, Cora Miao was the female lead and not Do Do Cheng. But she quit the series after eight episodes had been released and the script writers were forced to write her character off in episode 16 and created a new character played by Susanna Au-Yeung as replacement. Do Do Cheng’s character was promoted to first female lead but the script still stuck to the original plot where the Chow Yun-fatt’s character will fall in love with the replacement of the original female leads. However, due to the popularity of the Chow Yun-fatt and Do Do Cheng coupling, the script was rewritten to also kill-off the original love interest of the male lead and let the popular coupling has a happy ending. In the re-edited version for DVD release, the character played by Cora Miao was completely edited out from the drama. This really shows the quality in the production team where despite several last minute changes, the end result is still a great drama series

25 Sep 2023 Hmm....very interesting backgrounding history indeed, thanks. Just popped in for a brief refresher of this first episode after a long gap. The first few minutes of Chow jogging home after his pre-dawn run has been removed here I'm very certain. And DVD releases do sometimes differ from the version first telecast it's true. Can make for some confusion (unhappiness?) among viewers not in the know. It's an industry practice not altogether welcome/wholesome I maintain. Hollywood is very much in this same game of studio executives' wield of corporate power.

6 Feb 2022 (Part 3 of 3) The series was indisputably a mega-hit with Singaporeans by and large, even among the non-Chinese segments of the population (English subtitles were provided) with coffee shops usually packed, standing room only. Why, even a Malay Warrant Officer in my camp SAFTI (whose wife was Cantonese) was enamoured with the series. It was of course the pre-Internet era with only terrestrial tv providing limited hours of programming, no cable or satellite dish,and 24-hr at-your-convenience streaming platforms were not a reality yet. Entertainment options were also much scarcer then obviously. How time and technology has progressed by leaps and bounds since, surely a dramatic factor contributing to heated generational gap issues with every culture and society, I maintain. It is vital to mention/remind all my Singaporean compatriots that this was among the last Cantonese HK productions to be aired in its original tongue by our national tv broadcaster, in line with the official "Speak Mandarin Campaign", launched on 7 Sep 1979. Thenceforth all Chinese programmes produced locally were done in Mandarin, and imported foreign dialect shows were dubbed accordingly, with very few exceptions for opera offerings. A massive loss of our 5000-year Chinese civilisational linguistic and cultural heritage I resolutely assert so. Thanks everyone!

@@monicasclai5837 7 Feb 2022 Yup, Cheong Tak Lan the singer recalled exactly the same deserted streets in HK when office workers all rushed home to catch the tv telecast, during the intro to her rendition of the theme song in one of her live concerts (video still available on YT I trust).

+Michael Gerald Hong Malaysia got to see it later on in its original language,Cantonese over TV3. Although the plot is interesting,the acting is rather poor. And most HK actors/actresses are not really Cantonese but Hakkas.Chow Yun Fatt is one of them. Do Do is Shanghainese I believe.

Singapore's multi-racial population means that all along Mandarin (and Chinese dialects of yore), Malay and Tamil fee-to-air programmes by the national broadcaster carry English subtitles, to promote greater cultural interest and understanding, so as to build social cohesion and create a strong national identity (ever a work in progress). It is also a basic marketing necessity to attract advertising revenue of course. Going by your surname I surmise you are a Hong Konger. In Singapore it's spelt "Cheong" (or "Zhang" in Hanyu Pinyin). Thanks.

4 Feb 2022 (Part 1 of 3) A huge word of thanks indeed Uploader for the time, effort and kind generosity in mounting this most memorable and heart-tugging drama series on YT, excellent picture quality to boot. I'm not sure if the hard discs (Blu-Ray, DVD) are even available anymore for those of us who wish to collect the set for posterity. 40+ years on and suddenly, unexpectedly catching it unannounced on screen again sure comes as a sheer delight, if a little surreal in truth. The first impressions are of course how youthful the cast looks, with a fair number of them sadly no longer with us. The rather dated hairdos - Ha Ha! Does definitely bring back a flood of very poignant memories, needless to say.

+K Cheng Man In The Net really captures HK society during the late 1970s. Malaysians and Singaporeans got to see Hong Kongers' ugly side. The capitalism and materialism both sum up the rather gungho attitude of people who are even willing to resort to dirty tactics to climb up the social ladder.
