I have ordered my Zhiyun smooth Q3 Yesterday and waiting for it to land and will check it out for my future videos. And thanks God you made my day, now I don't need to search here and there for any tutorial on this Gimbal or maybe any other. It took me around a month to select a mobile phone Gimbal out of my budget; there are so many in the market and much more than that on KZfaq to think and decide. Maybe I have not chosen the best one but I hope it will be good enough for a beginner like me. And thanks to Julian again.

Hi Kenneth, i would go with either the OM4 or this Smooth Q3. I have a video comparing the 2. As an Android user you will have a few limitations when using their respective app

Great video sir! Curious if you’ve been able to get any nice smooth Dolly Zoom shots? That’s one of the features I most looking forward to but it seems to be a bit jerky, not really useable

on that particular phone that I used it wasn't working but I don't know if they fixed that or not (ultra wide angle lens). Zoom will work on Android if you use the ZY Cami app. Not sure about your last question, is the zoom the same on this gimbal and on the Smooth 5? physically they are not the same. The way it works when it zooms in and out, is the same. Just different controls

Like what you said, you need to use the native camera apps for android if you want to shoot 4k 60fps, but can you still use the modes of the gimbal while on native camera?

for Android, no, there is no slow motion on their app and there is also no 60fps or manual mode. This is a problem that happens on every brand and it seems to be related to Android and not the gimbal brand itself

I can't decide OM 4 SE would be a better choice for real estate video recording or Zhiyun Smooth Q3. I don't know which gives me more features to use in case of using third party camera app.

most of the gimbal mechanical functions will work, for example re center the camera, change gimbal mode (dedicated button), sport mode. IF connected to bluetooth record button and zoom might work but not every phone will support that (I know my Samsung S21+ doesn't)

it shouldn't, but I am not 100% sure with your phone. (S20+ did not see the arm, but not sure about the FE)

Hello Paul and Lisa! I have the S21 plus, so it's not the same....with mine it doesn't see the arm, from the app you can't select the ultra wide angle lens either, you need to be on the native camera app

Oh, BTW, @Julian, since you mentioned too many things are lacking in the Android app of Zhiyun, I wanted to ask are they still missing or they have updated the app later on. Because how can it be, that they have too many good things in the iphone app and the same are missing in the Android app. Is it they want us to buy an iphone to properly use the Zhiyun Gimbal?

I think everything remains the same. Is not Zhiyun's fault, it is the Android ecosystem that are not opening up enough, specially some brands like Samsung. It doesn't make sense, but Samsung has acknowledged this many times by now. unfortunate for sure

Otto, you know how much I was waiting for this review and, at first, my thought has been "Ok I sell my Steady X and buy this one", but... but then you went thru the android settings and difference and I've been like "Oh sh*t, again android's discriminations" 😂 ... plus, the fact that to have all the features you have to pay an annual fee? That's a sort of "scam" to me. I understand that for 79€ (or 109€ in case of the PRO edition) I can't expect much, but HOHEM didn't ask me for anything more at the same price point. I think I'll stuck with my OM4 and my Steady X by now. But thanks a lot for another amazing review, that as you know, I was waiting for! Keep up with the GREAT JOB Otto!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. that Prime Service comes with other stuff like templates and filters, which is maybe just fine, but I think a lot of people want to do live streaming and I don't think they expect to pay for that kind of feature. Like you said, other gimbals don't charge anything else. We'll see if Zhiyun changes that or not.

@@OttoJulian_ On a certain point of view, buying the combo version and having 1 year free of prime services could be the best deal, but still, android's users still don't get the full features, and that's mainly the reason why I wouldn't switch to it. I just wonder why, with so many millions of Android's users, still Apple's phones gets all the features. As far as I know, also in China the Android's phones overtook iPhones on the sale.

@@DarioPanara I think the problem is on Android's side and not from the gimbal manufacturers. I watched a review that says that samsumg S9 does have support 60fps with the cami app. There is a lot of inconsistency on this regard. I am not a big Apple fan, but they have managed this way better than Android, and just like many others, I'm still an Amdroid user

@@OttoJulian_ What I honestly found pretty strange, is not getting features in the proprietary gimbals' apps (especially FPS rates), which I get eventually using Filmic Pro on the same phones (Samsung Note 10 and Xiaomi 10T).

I’m having one query here that I haven’t figured out yet. I want to make all my videos by keeping the mobile in portrait mode. I can do that by triple tapping the back button. But whenever I click in Smart tab in the ZY cami app, the gimbal puts the mobile back into landscape mode which I don’t like. Is it possible to use all the smart features in portrait mode? Also, I do not see any option to do it using joystick. It only allows me to rotate the gimbal, not the mobile (like a wheel).

I think that the smart tab has been designed to work in landscape mode. We will have to wait until they fix that so it works in portrait mode. About the joystick and the rotation, I’m not sure what you mean

@@OttoJulian_ Thank you for the reply. 😊 Yeah, this kinda sucks as I mostly make videos for instagram reels. However, I did manage to figure out how to manage the rotation in the shoot mode settings. I was looking for a setting that I could use to rotate the mobile from portrait to landscape( got it by keeping it in Vertex mode) with other types of rotations. Different shoot mode settings are what I was looking for. Now I can make my own videos without depending on the ZY cami smart mode. 😊👍

Hi, will mostly depend on your shooting style, there is a video on my channel comparing the 2 of them (SE version is the same in terms of hardware as the non-SE version), but for your specific phone, which is too big and heavy, the OM4 might be a better pick, although the magnetic clamp might not hold your case properly (I always end up using the phone without the case)

Yeah, I've been saying that lately about the OM4 clamp. It barely fits my phone with a thin case. I do believe that the Q3 will have more space to hold the phone with your case

I observed couple of things and will be grateful if anyone advise its normal. Upon moving through all the modes when I reach last one which is pov and spin shot mode I see slight tilting movement of phone when moving to pov mode and spinshot mode. Also in spinshot mode when i place the phone in gimbal at extreme end of rotations I see back and forth small movements in the gimbal, very slight but noticeable, I thought it could be bcos its a mechanical stop end and gimbal is trying to compensate for movements etc but I sill want to be sure if it is a normal thing. I use iphone 12 pro max with zihyun app and not been able to take a panaromic shot which is done of whole grid rest all pano shots work fine, I get message that it is failed to generate pano shot after it tried to process it. Can any one advise me if this is common with all q3

yes, moving from one mode and the next one will make a slight movement. I think the motor is adjusting to the new mode. About the small movement during spinshot, I honestly can't confirm, as I haven't noticed anything unusual

Hi Bobby, are we talking about underslung mode? (low angle shots?). The best way to do it is to flip the phone towards the side, not to the front, not to the back. Left side always does the trick for me (look at how I do it on the video) and make a consistent movement like rotating the clock from 12 to 6 counter-clockwise

they are designed for smartphones, maybe that's why nobody is testing them with an action camera? There used to be an adapter, like a plate simulating the shape of a phone where you could mount a gopro, but I haven't seen those in a long time. Other solution is to get a Gopro gimbal like this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fb1deM2WprnOqGg.html

hi, it didn't work on Samsung S20 and S21 plus. Other Android phones might have a different experience

@@OttoJulian_ what iPhone 12 Pro Max? To my knowledge sq3 is not supported by filmic pro. I asked them and they said no and would consider it I guess it doesn’t on the iPhone 12 Pro Max either. Can you just use the sq3 and filmic pro still but just not have control over it?

@@ANIMATORT sure, you can still use it. You can also use the camera app with the gimbal, if what you want is the stabilization.

@@supritibasak5816 that phone shouldn't have problems at all. Try turning off the bluetooth on the note 8, and only turn it on on the note 9.

They are not only in the Q3 some features, which are not in the Android but in iPhone Gimbal. In nearly all Gimbals is it so. Since they didn't change it, I will use other Gimbals or none. End of discussion.

Two things I don't like about this gimbal: the tilt is limited, around 45º +/- and the settings reset themselves on power down. Every time you start up the gimbal you have to turn on the Cami app set your gimbal parameters then turn it off again. Most features in the app are not really necessary for most people, the native phone camera is as good or better and consume way less battery.

hello Neil, yeah for the most part I do prefer using the native camera app, and this is true for any gimbal, but some people like using the gimbal's app for the features. Now you mentioned that the settings reset when you turn off the gimbal? could you be more specific on which settings we are talking about? thanks

@@OttoJulian_ Yes sure, the joystick speed, run or walk settings etc. All of the gimbal settings are not preserved on power down. You need to connect with the app Cami put them where you want then you can turn them off. I prefer just to use the camera itself, but to make the gimbal work well you need to set these on every restart.

Why the hell don't these gimbal companies allow all the features in Android as they do in Apple, our phones have those options available so why don't they just enable them?? really stupid software and that's what is putting me off buying any of these gimbals.. but they all do it.. I will be a first time gimbal user so the software will help a lot, but not if half the features are not there.. They will lose so many potential customers because of their dumb software and there's just as many android users as apple. Just doesn't make sense to me.. oh well.. the search continues. Nice video though.

Thanks Brett. I totally understand you, as I am mainly an Android user, but the fact that I've come to realize is that there is no complot against Android, and it seems that this is the other way around. Gimbal manufacturers do want their gimbals and software to be 100% compatible with Android, but I'm not sure if it's Android or phone makers that are not helping out. I know Samsung has stated that they don't want to fully open their camera functions to third party applications.

@@OttoJulian_ Hi Otto, thanks for your reply. Yeah, your probably right, it's just a shame as without being able to use these apps to their full potential is kind of a game killer for me. Hopefully they will become available in the near future. Guess we will have to wait and see. 😬

@@bretth9096 well I would really hope that they can come up with something, otherwise it keeps being frustrating for everyone. DJI and the rest of manufacturers know that they are losing customers for this, but it's uncertain if they can do anything about it
