音乐中每一拍所占的时间长短成为“拍值”。拍值有匀值拍、变值拍、弹性值拍和自由自拍四类。中国音乐的显著特点是大量采用“弹性值拍”和“自由值拍”。这两种拍值给人的感觉是速度时快时慢、拍无定值，在乐句轻重、松紧的无穷变化中产生了极强的音乐张力，也就是我们所说的“散板”。《泛沧浪》就是一首散板的古琴曲，仿佛一幅自由写意的泼墨山水画卷，幽幽琴思，娓娓道来。
