The "Great Hu Jia" is usually referred to as an eighteen-part ancient qin piece. This piece and "Little Hu Jia" are known as "Hu Jia Er Ben", the popular "Shen Jia Sheng" and "Zhu Jia Sheng" in the early Tang dynasty are known for these two pieces. Later, Dong Tinglan inherited the tradition of the two families, finishing and re-creating the current zither piece "Big Hu Jia" and "Little Hu Jia". The main theme of the piece is Cai Wenji's sorrow for her homeland, which comes from a woman's heart and is filled with the pain of being in exile.

Chinese music, while mostly pentatonic, makes use of other scale tones. They actually had a 12 tone chromatic scale way before West. But most importantly, feel the soul in this piece! Its so ancient yet so human! You can imagine all the composer have been through, amazing!

some info about the piece: The theme throughout the piece is the sadness of a woman who misses her hometown because of the pain of displacement. The frequent variations and chromatic progressions in the melody, as well as the "many voices and few rhymes", reflect the unique style of the Tang Dynasty.

more details: Cai Yan, literary name Wenji, daughter of Cai Yong, had extensive learning and was a talented conversationalist; she was also very sensitive to music pitch. One night when her father was playing the qin a string broke. Hearing this she said, "That was the first string." Again hearing a string break she said, "That was the fourth string." This amazed her father. Later she was married to Wei Zhongdao of Hedong. When he died she returned home. During the great disorder at the end of the Han dynasty, Cai Yan was carried off by nomad cavalry, and in the frontier region she was a royal princess for 12 years. She bore two sons, and the chieftain greatly respected her. One spring while riding on a nomad cart she was emotionally moved by the reed pipes, and wrote a poem expressing her feelings. It said, Nomad reed pipes are blowing; Horses whinny on the frontier. A solitary goose turns its head, And its cry resounds, "Ying, ying." Later Cao Cao, an old acquaintance of Cai Yong, ordered a great general to ransom Cai Wenji. She returned to Han, (but) her two sons remained with the nomads. Afterward, thinking longingly of Wenji, the nomads would roll up grass leaves for blowing as reed pipes, and play mournful sounds.

你的理念要清晰一下,古琴其实是自已听的,自弹自听,是感受表达意境心境,不是现代西方流行音乐体系,琴棋书画剑射,没有一个是为表演而学的,表演的是古筝。
