You gotta admire Nate’s fearlessness behind the kit. He’s got the perfect blend of that jazzy grit and pocket.

You can definitely tell he has just the tiniest bit of uncertainty in his face when he modulates the meter or flips the groove but he fuckin nails it all the same. That's art right there.

When I first saw this and they got into that 17/16 time-signature groove, I almost lost it. These people straight murdered the whole thing so bad, it took the cleaning crew decades to clean it up.

You see one "chop"? -NO You see one "fill"? -NO Then how does it sound good? -BECAUSE IT'S NATE SMITH. Thats a hell of a poem. But the reality.

Yes. So much cooler than just most playing lots of chops. These are tasty. Do it, Nate!

THe pocket, the timing, the modulation, the pure tastiness... I'll take that over gospel chops any day.
@normanwilmoth74045 жыл бұрын
From the mouth of Chris Coleman, what is gospel chops!?! Its just chops. Basically that term came about when people started fusing alot of different chops from all genre's of music but it got labeled gospel chops!? It's technically just fusion, quoting Chris Coleman on this subject but even the master of Chops in my opinion can't even explain where the term Gospel Chops even came from😄

He's completely unbelievable in his technical abilities. I know this is a bold statement and I'll get shit for saying it, but Nate Smith's hi-hat chops are the closest anyone has ever gotten to Buddy Rich, and arguably in some ways even better. One of the videos I highly recommend if you having seen it yet is Nate Smith's set on NPR Night Owl. Look up his song called "Skip Step" on that series.
