This week on ‘Has It Aged Well?’, Abbas and Urjita are joined by someone they’ve wanted to have on the show since its inception, it’s KZfaqr and founder of Tried and Refused Productions, Anmol Jamwal AKA @jammypants4. The film being discussed is Zoya Akhtar’s 2011 hit ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraa’ or ZNMD for all you hipsters. Topics discussed include: The ‘first world problems’ conundrum, Kalki and Katrina’s performances, does the lead trio have good chemistry? We do our best Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar impressions, parenting in Indian films and what sets the Naseer character in this film apart, our first memories and the trips we took after watching this film (spoiler: one of us went to Karjat) and a lot more.

Btw, Arjun (Hrithik) does say in a scene to Katrina, that when his Dad died, he left them in a lot of debt and that’s why he’s been chasing money ever since. That was his financial situation growing up.

Jammy and Abbas totally missed the point of the pranks. They were meant to be funny - yes. But they also showed the audience what kind of friends they were back in school. How this trip was an escape from adult life for them, before they take on more responsibilities that come with marriage. Just an opportunity to relive childhood memories. Also the pranks did not always end well, they end up in jail because of a prank in the bar and that's how Imran meets his father.

I so agree with his. The whole trip was arranged by Kabir (Abhay Deol's character) coz he missed the fun times they had when they were in school. They were literally known as the Three Musketeers! The pranks were a way to relive the nostalgia (the childhood they had). The point of the whole movie was that despite all the responsibilities and setbacks life throws at us we should never let go of the child in us and we should never forget to live! Infact Katrina's character Laila was an epitome of this emotion coz she is the one who made Arjun mostly and to certain extent the other two characters realize that life is too short to be bugged down by the harsh realities. Life is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest no matter what!

33:10 Imran’s character didn’t grow up rich, and I don’t think he “[became] rich later,” either. There’s a deleted scene that includes Anupam Kher as his stepfather, and the family is clearly middle-class. As an adult, Imran is a city guy, but I don’t think he’s rich, unless advertising pays unusually well in India (and if it does, someone please let me know, because I should finally get my OCI card and move). Right at the beginning, we see that unlike the other two guys, Imran throws his non-fancy clothes into a non-fancy bag or backpack or whatever, and he flies to Spain coach, whereas the others have nice luggage and fly first/business. And of course, Arjun makes fun of Imran’s salary (frankly, if Imran works at an ad agency writing jingles, in India, there’s a decent chance he makes in a year what Arjun makes in a couple of weeks). Also, Arjun says that when his father died, he left the family deeply in debt, which is what fuels his (Arjun’s) drive for financial success (I guess Abbas was refilling his popcorn during these scenes 😆).

I remember watching it 4 times in 4 different cinema hall(never done that before or after of ZNMD). People were giving standing ovation after the last scene.

Yes, and you see in that deleted scene that indeed, his stepfather was a very loving, kind man. I get why they cut it, but it would have been nice if it had stayed in the final cut, because it’s generally better to show the audience what a character is like, rather than just tell us.

Am I dumb for finding the humour fantastic and not forced and a lot more depth than these guys see? I thought it was an iconic film with intricate weaving of all three storylines with periodic reveals seamlessly, like life unfolds.

I just watched this movie for the first time last Thursday (20th June 2024) and it was re-released on selected theatres. I live in Rajkot but I went to Ahmedabad to watch this movie with my friend. Some way or another, I couldn't watch it when it released first in 2011 when I was 18, and not even able to watch anytime later like on TV or like downloaded print or something. So I watched it first time just a week ago, and it was amazing. Great experience of watching it in theatre. It's a movie you must watch. Enjoyed your discussion on it and definitely related with your views.

ZNMD was one of a kind and I honestly doubt that Jee Le Zara will be able to recreate that finesse with which the entire film was executed be it acting, music, writing, etc. But hey, I'm down to be surprised if it lives up to the hype! Either way, I'm excited and keeping my expectations low so that I'm not left disappointed.

Since you guys mentioned about Jee Le Zaraa happening or not, recent updates from Farhan and a couple of other people on crew show that recce/location scouting has begun and will mostly go on floors later this year as Urjita pointed out. Loved this episode guys, keep 'em coming ✌🏼

It's so interesting to know that Hrithik's character and acting is liked by all of you because when I watched it for the first time he was my least favorite, in fact I hated his acting, I thought he was hamming except in the boat scene right after coming out of the water. And then I watched it again a month ago and Hrithik was fine, still not my favorite! I remember back then that Abhay was my most favorite, maybe because that was when he was considered the next big star and I used to like all of his wacky film roles. But this time around, I liked Farhan's character the most because he's the only one who was naturally very funny! Also I never felt jokes were forced at all but I do agree that pranks with strangers were bit too much now, I remember enjoying it when I was younger! Anyway, just want to say that I really enjoy every podcast Urjita does, her takes on everything is so funny and interesting! I am just so amazed at her sense of herself and clarity at such acyoung age, I was just a dumb timid dreamer at that age!

I pretty much felt it was a sequel to DCH. Also I'm not a fan of gully boy its not fun. Honeymoon travels is my favourite film on the Excel Entertainment spreadsheet... Der lagi lekin is my favourite song so much depth in that song.

You guys are clueless. You are judging the actors rather than the characters. They were all great and equally important for their roles. Mediocre people are obsessed with who is the hero and who is the sidekick instead of just enjoying the movie

Does y’all’s imitation of Kalki’s Hindi sound like that because she’s white, or because she actually sounds like that? She definitely has an accent of _some_ kind, but I’m not sure what it is (granted, I’m a native speaker of American English, and my mother tongue is Telugu, so wtf do I know?). I do know that Kalki grew up near Ooty, and I saw an interview in which she said that early in her career, the casts and crews she worked with would gently tease her for her heavy Tamil accent when trying to speak Hindi. As a result, maybe she’s overcorrecting or something, since the Tamil-accented Hindi seems to have gone away. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Then again, y’all asserted that Shah Rukh speaks with an American accent at certain points in _Swades,_ which-no, he doesn’t (other than one moment when he says the phrase “got it” in an exaggerated American accent.)

I used to love ZNMD 7 -8 years ago, but now i look back at it i found some points: As movie is writen by women , men are manly enogh in the movie, if you hit on friends gf and still going around girl who hritik is into, no bestfriend ever gonna forgive him . All the pranks and jokes are so immature or girly if i may so All the PT teacher jokes are so cringy Women charcters (written by women) are not up to the mark, kalki is shown as constantly jealous, i mean common women are writting women charcter Compare it to DCH , friendship of boys seems more real as akshay khanna does not talk to amir for good couple of months

Very bad episode sadly, again coz of the guest. Somehow Jammy is very well read and has watched a lot of world cinema, he isn’t articulate in his speech. His oratory skills are very very poor. Also, the whole point of the movie was missed. Abhay is not the fourth wheel at all, or the ‘car’ as Urjita says. He has an arc, but why his character just lies chill in the aircraft is because he doesn’t have new money like hrithik does. He has always had money and hence doesn’t make a thing abt it. Whereas hrithik comes from a poor family (father left lot of debt when he passed) and hence now that he has so much money he is showing off.

exactly the way i felt, Jammy just like to bash things from the past now only as he has become a SAMOSA critic and paid PR. I am sure when this film was released, Jammy had a organsm at one corner of his house looking at Hrithik outfits but now he is too old to accept it. He just want to showoff.
