I enjoyed this Ben. What I like about you is that you’re very true to yourself & not influenced by others. (Easier said than done these days) for me the pine cones & second version (your favourite) of the red leaves & light branches are both fine art prints that would look stunning in any home decor. Thanks Brett! That's one of the nice things about shooting film. Setting up a photo takes a lot of time and effort, so I only photograph that scenes that truly speak to me. In that sense, it's quite liberating because I'm not concerned about how a photo will be received. Thanks for watching and commenting!

favorites for me: red leaves white branches, pine cones, grass field with trees (maybe cropped different). And I actually love the first dead trees image especially the slightly cooler one. Great captures.

Excellent film reveal, Ben! I love these videos! Apologies for taking a while to watch it. Knowing it was a longer video, I wanted to wait until I could really sit down and enjoy it. You got some wonderful images this trip! I am a big fan of the Provia warming filter images. I've typically been a Velvia guy, but honestly, the Provia handled most of the shots far better! That Ponderossa pine trunk image I really enjoyed. Big fan of the image after it as well. I really liked the Velvia image, but then.. You showed the Provia one haha. Anyway, once again, awesome trip! Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks for watching! It really is interesting seeing Provia and Velvia side by side. In the past, I always reached straight for Velvia, but I've definitely become a Provia convert over the past couple years in general. There's something about how it captures a bit more detail in those dark midtones that Velvia simply can't. The warming filter is a big help as well.

@@BenHorne I've always loved the contrast and vibrancy of Velvia, but it does lack that detail sometimes, and it's just sometimes a bit too much. And, I guess, if you want a little more punch than what Provia typically achieves it is easy enough to add a little saturation and contrast in post whilst still remaining a little more... chill.. than Velvia. I'll definitely be getting a pro pack of Provia next order! And perhaps a warming filter or two.

Much appreciated! In some ways, it's a blessing in disguise though. By shutting off the ads and not taking part in clickbait, it attracts a much smaller but more dedicated audience. I enjoy flying under the radar since it allows me to produce photos and videos that are more true to myself rather than chasing the latest trend.

Love the pine cones and needles but my fav is the Ponderosa Pine and Yellow Maples. As a Fuji shooter, I also prefer the Provia profile as the Velvia goes to blue early morning and late evening.

Thanks Johnny! I look forward to revisiting that scene with the ponderosa and the maples this fall to see if I can do any better with the lighting. Perhaps it’ll turn out that I had the better lighting and conditions all along. We’ll find out! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Amazing collection of images, the pine cones, grasses and red leaves were my favourites. Just finished reading your composition eBook - a very enjoyable read with lots of valuable information. I especially liked the section on story telling.

Thanks Rupert! Those are among my favorite images of the trip as well, and they sure were some fun subjects to find. I very much enjoy the storytelling aspect of landscape photography. In many ways, it's fascinating how we can bring inanimate subjects to life in that way. Thanks for watching, and also for buying the eBook. I actually really like the Ponderosa in the Maples. For me the light looks very dynamic and really beautiful with a balance in composition that's very pleasing to the eye. When it came up on screen during the in the field video I was really surprised that you were not more of a fan of it. As always great images!

Thanks Tom! It's a sheet of film that I'll likely need to revisit. I think I was just a bit bummed that the light wasn't better, especially since I know how wonderful it can be back in those canyons. I'll have to see about shooting that scene next year with more favorable conditions, and see how those images compare.

The one with the ponderosa pine is my favorite shot from this trip. I love the texture in the bark and the contrast in colors. I think it represents Autumn nicely.

An enjoyable film reveal, I chuckled when you were pondering a bit more over the "maple 'n ponderosa" image. I always love the surprise at the end! This experimental one is super cool in my eyes, yes it may not be focused but that's exactly how looking through water looks! You almost do a double take, you first think the image isn't focused but then you realise it's water. I do prefer the just-before-the-sun version of this one (the last image).

Thanks Kirsten! When I return to Zion this fall, there are certainly a few scenes I hope to revisit. Who knows though, perhaps the photos I got on this trip are better than what I can do next year. It's always a fun surprise. The under water leaf shot had a lot of potential but I do think it's a scene I can somehow do better with in the future. I'm not sure how, or even if I'll get those conditions again, but we'll see! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Enjoyed the video (as always)! Really appreciate your description of your thought process when composing the shots then again when looking at the film. Informative. I watched both videos today but you didn't mention anything about the trail cam findings... Do you ever wonder how often a mountain lion is watching you? Kinda spooky to think about. Also, how's your pup doing as we haven't seen him for a while. Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks! It was an interesting experiment, though I do think it's a scene I can do better with next time I happen to stumble upon a scene like that. Perhaps opening up the lens more and using an even faster shutter speed would give more of the look I had in mind. That's tough to do on an 8x10 though. Thanks for watching and commenting!

My favorites are the one of the tree trunk surrounded by leaves (the one immediately after the grass photo) and the leaf in the water.

Thanks Andrew! Provia sometimes is a bit blah on the light box, but once you scan it, it sure has everything you need. Such a versatile film for sure.

Ektachrome is a film I plan on working with a bit as well, though I will say that Provia sure is a versatile film. I love the almost-lack of reciprocity failure.

Hey! I've really enjoyed this Zion series, and find it very inspiring living in the Southwest myself. Helps me take new eyes to the scene. Just writing in to say that the Ponderosa and Maples is a composition that I really like. The additional cool tones in the second image is very cool. It's a subtle piece, but I really like it.

Thanks Charles! That's a photo I'll have to scan at some point and see how I like it on the computer. Sometimes I do end up with those sleeper shots I didn't think much of at the time, but they grow on me. In any case, it's a scene I hope to revisit this fall.

I think the 'unknown' tree at the beginning of the reveal is the Singleleaf ash - Fraxinus anomala. Hard to tell from a single image though.

I looked it up, and although there are some similarities, the leaf structure is a bit different. Someone else suggested it might be a Utah Serviceberry, and that seems to be a good match. I've never really paid too much attention to how this plant looks during the spring, but it looks like it flowers and has some berries. By the time I see it each fall, the leaves turn a wonderful shade of yellow.

What an excellent series from Zion. I used to skim through the last of every series where you go through the slides. What a mistake. I’m now correcting it. I’m really liking how Provia turns out and now will try out as Velvia isn’t there anymore and it seems an excellent choice for information as you have pointed out. I used to love Astia but they discontinued it long back. Thanks Ben!

Thanks for watching! These videos definitely get a bit long at times, but it is fun to talk through the process when the trip is still so fresh in my mind (well, most of the time that is). Provia really is a wonderful film stock, and it's great not to have to worry about reciprocity failure. I have a few boxes of Velvia 50 left, but I'm not sure I'll be using them.

This is such an incredible collection, Ben! Can't even decide which are my favorites. I am actually a big fan of 9:12, although I can see how it is different from other images of yours, and maybe not at the same level as other images in your portfolio.

Thanks Thomas! Perhaps that's a photo I'll need to revisit at some point. I wish I was a bit tighter on the right side, but the left side had some very distracting elements just out of view. favourite for me is the pine cones. I like everything about it :-) on the ponderosa and maple you asked for thoughts on - I prefer the second version. I don't mind the bright spots - they actually lift the image for me.

Thanks! That's a scene I hope to revisit this fall and see how it looks on a non-overcast day. I suspect the light will be much more dimensional, but who knows, maybe I'll look at it then and realize the photo I shot on this trip was better.

Good morning Ben. While I generally avoid it, seeing you work through it, I'm beginning to realize how pleasant a challenge "chaos" might be. As a side thought, have you considered shooting some B&W or IR film? As always, thanks for the beautiful and enjoyable fall season tour.

Thanks Paul! Chaos sure is a wonderful challenge, and the payoff is that the resulting images often feel very calm. I've debated doing some B&W in the past, but honestly it's not really my style and would add yet another film stock to carry and range of subjects to look for. In some ways, I'm not all that bummed that Velvia was discontinued because it greatly simplified the film I carry with me in the field. Provia sure is a versatile film.

Even though i don’t shoot film myself, your reveal videos are great to watch for your insights to composition and lighting. My little boy inside had to pout a little learning that the pine cones didn’t make the cut for your next box set. 😕

Thanks Keith! Perhaps the pinecone photo will make a surprise appearance in my 2022 box set, especially if I'm not quite as satisfied with the work from my fall trip later this year. I made a proof print of it, but wasn't quite satisfied with how it looked on paper at the time. I had that sheet of film drum scanned, so I'll be able to dial it in. Thanks! This is the Kaiser Slimlite Plano. I upgraded recently because it allows me to show the film vertically, and also two sheets at a time. It's a wonderful light box.

And yes I really liked the bare branches and red maple image. I may have cropped the left top or may be moved to your left. I know easier said that done with LF gear.

Thanks! It was a tricky scene to compose for sure. I walked around with my Artists Viewcatcher and found that particular vantage point was about the best I could do. I wish I had a bit more image at the bottom, but when I was contemplating that one, I also knew I needed to maintain the sweeping curve of that branch in the upper left. I found that branch was needed to balance the large sweeping branch across the lower right. Thankfully the wind was quite cooperative that morning.

Thanks! All of my film is developed by a local lab so I don't have that level of control, but I find myself not as interested in Velvia these days. Provia tends to give me a better image, and the addition of a warming filter can help in those situations when the light is a bit cool. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Very cool fall trip again this year Ben. Thinking about that great scene you are talking about at about 13:00 and planning to revisit, I would like to hear you about the horizontal line in the rock formation behind the tree. That horizontal line breaks the other curving lines and I wonder what you think of it.

Thanks Alexandre! That change in the background of that scene is something I initially wanted to exclude, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked having that area up there. It's often the imperfections that make a scene feel genuine, and when we exclude each and every part we don't like, sometimes it strips the soul from the image.

I do like the twin pines on Provia with a warming filter. Had you considered to use some rear-tilt to reduce the converging tree tops?

Thanks! The warming filter definitely helped with that one. It's a good tool to have in my kit for future scenes like that. Unless I'm photographing Redwoods or other trees that are truly vertical, I don't often use rear movements to correct for anything. The Ponderosa trees in particular grow in all sorts of directions, so I find it's easier to just shoot them as they are, and do my best to visually level the composition in a pleasing way.

I think some of these photos would work way better in black and white especially the lone tree. Bump up the contrast and would be good. Not sure of the exact middle placement of the tree, but would love to see it in B&W.

That's an interesting observation, and I definitely think I've been drawn to some subjects lately that would translate well to B&W images. Perhaps it's a sign that at some point, I really should buy some B&W film. :-) Thanks for watching and commenting!
