Zipp's new 101 gravel wheels and SRAM's whole XPLR group are designed to take gravel bikes right to the edge of mountain bike territory. So what happens when you put it on a Santa Cruz Stigmata gravel bike and go head to head with Santa Cruz's awesome Blur full suspension XC bike? Dave and I hit the singletrack of Stainburn forest to find out.
Thanks to SRAM and Santa Cruz for the test kit and bikes, thanks to Giro Cycling UK, Peaty's Products and Crud for channel sponsorship and huge thanks to my Patreon supporters for pledging on a monthly basis to keep GKTV growing. If you like what I'm doing, sign up here and get exclusive, early and ad free edits as a thank you.

Another cracking video. How you keep talking while hammering along trails is something else altogether. .

Great review. I also take my cx bike where I have no business taking it and have been considering these. Confirmed these are what I need. I have the fox 32 tc on my bike, so huge fan of suspension forks on cx/gravel bikes as well. Just got the cane creek eesilk + carbon seat post today. Excited to see how that adds to the equation. Cheers mate

Every one of Guys SRAM XPLR videos is completely off the rails bonkers.....but it's a lot of fun to watch the equipment and the rider get pushed this far.

Love the down-country cx bike. Mine cx bike is fixed. Currently the name is tracklocross 🤢 I like fxcx a bit better but the down-country cx bike is spot on

Brilliant review - thank you! Question, I am riding mostly gravel roads with washboard undulations that will shake your teeth loose. Will these Zipp 101 XPLR wheels help with this type of terrain?

Would love to see a ride review of the wheels without the suspension fork...see how they stack up against other gravel wheels...

I’ve ridden them a lot with the fork locked out (there’s a big segment of the Singletrack in the video where I’m doing that) which makes the bike a lot stiffer than with the standard fork and they’re still way more compliant, comfortable and controlled than the 303s which were my previous smooth gravel benchmark compared to Hunt, DT, FFWD, Deda, Fulcrum etc. Need to ride the latest ENVE but from what I’ve heard from other testers they’re similar to 303s

I guess the question is, will you leave the stig set up this way for your average riding?
@GuyKesTV

TBH I’m interested how long I leave the fork on too. Definitely sticking with the wheels and dropper though.

How does Zip 101 XPLR compare to Spinergy GXX or HED Emporia in regards to comfort/compliance?

Sorry Marcio, I’ve not personally ridden either of those wheels but the Zipp are crazy smooth

Youy got me on gravel and now I'm addicted. Still MTB for silly stupid stuff but something about the accellaration up climbs on the gravel bike and the 'have I gone mad' moments on rocky, rooty descents. Will be looking to swap out the Alex Rims on my Merida Silex as they're 700C of noodles. The Maxxis Ramblers are ready for the bin. Not sure what tyres to replace with though? (Ride just north of Cardiff, gravel behind Castell Coch and St Gwynnos Forest north of Pontypridd and over to Afan (Skyline Trail etc). Any suggestions or upcoming gravel tyre reviews?

Wow, love this video! I was going to get a Specialized Chisel but I see I can just convert my gravel to what you’ve done. This is great! Which tires are you using? I plan to use the 1x Ekar, thoughts? The 101 should be able to mate with the Ekar, I hope.
@GuyKesTV
@GuyKesTV 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can get Zipp with an Ekar freehub. And yes I’d go dropper before forks TBH. ESP if you’re using 101s

@@GuyKesTV Thanks! I have a Saffron gravel on the way and thinking to convert to something a bit more off road and so glad I came across your video! Damn, that looks like fun! I will get the 101's, a dropper and maybe a 100mm travel front fork.

@@GuyKesTV Sorry but where do you put the switch lever for the dropper?
@GuyKesTV
@GuyKesTV 2 жыл бұрын
@@wss327 if you don’t want to go wireless PNW do a really good dropper in 27.2 too. There’s a video on that somewhere on the channel too. I’m amazed how much difference the wheels and fork make TBH, having gone through early days MTB I was like, how can that little movement make a difference. That said I love my Chisel too 🤷‍♂️
@GuyKesTV

@@wss327 it just tucks inside the bar level with the brake/shift lever. I’ve done a video on it if you search PNW Coast on the channel 👍🏻

Stay away from this wheel. The tubeless setup really doesn’t work, if you’ve read reviews then you’ll see it’s a known issue. It’s caused by the way the nipples protrude into the rim bed. After trying about 10 different ways to get them setup I finally gave up. Note they didn’t seal the way they were taped from factory either. Zipp will not stand behind their product and I purchased them from Colorado Cyclist who will do nothing to right this. I’ve had to file a claim with PayPal and contact my credit card to go after getting a refund. I’ll never purchase anything from Zipp or Colorado cyclist again.
